This heliogravure by Salvador Dali is titled The Queen’s Croquet Ground and comes from his Alice in Wonderland series from 1969. Dali was one of the premier surrealists in the world, and there was no better pairing for the avant-garde master of Surrelaism than the fantasy land created by Lewis Carroll in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Luckily, an editor at Random House saw the connection and commissioned Dalí to illustrate a limited edition of the classic in 1969. Dalí created twelve heliogravures for the occasion—one illustration for each chapter—as well as a four-color etching as the frontispiece. Only 2,700 of the edition were printed, and the artist signed each original etching. The heliogravure comes with a beautifully engraved passage about Alice and the Queen and the Rabbit engaging in croquet as well. The bottom edge is deckled, it is signed by Dali in the lower right margin, and it is listed as #529 in Prestel’s Dali, Catalogue Raisonne of Etchings and Mixed-Media Prints 1924 - 1980, Vol 1.O 24 x 18 1/2 in.s 17 x 11 1/2 in.Please note that all sales are final. § Salvador Dali (Spanish 1904-1989) for Royal Crown Derby 'Pink Glove' Plate, circa 1938 manufacturer's printed and impressed marks, Christies paper label(23cm diameter (9in diameter))Footnote: Provenance: Edward James Collection; Christies, London, Edward James Collection , 2-6 June 1986; John Jesse, London; Private Collection, UK; Literature: Britain Magazine, 4 December 2009; Ghislaine Wood (ed.), Surreal Things: Surrealism & Design , V&A, London, 2007, pp.282-3. The unique 'Pink Glove' tea service was designed by Dali on a visit to London in 1936, having been commissioned by the poet, artist and collector of Surrealist works Edward James for his extraordinary Surrealist house Monkton. As noted by the V&A from previously unknown correspondance between James and the decorating firm Green and Abbott in 1938, the 'pink glove tea set' is mentioned alongside the 'Lobster' telephone, 'Mae West Lips' sofa and 'Torso' chest of drawers all known to have been conceived by Dali. Edward James specially commissioned the set from Royal Crown Derby and it was sold in the Edward James Collection at Christies in 1986 where it was bought by the renowned dealer John Jesse. Jesse subsequently sold pieces to the Royal Crown Derby Museum and to the V&A in the sale of his collection at Sotheby's New Bond Street, London on 22 February 2006. This plate is one of only a couple of pieces from the set still known to be in private hands.

Starting in 1948, Tàpies became heavily influenced by the work of surrealists - in particular, by Ernst, Miro and Klee - and started exploring the possibilities offered by depicting the subconscious' otherworldly imagery. The resulting paintings, which Tàpies' friend, writer Joan Brossa, would often name with fantastical and poetic titles, earned him the respect and admiration of Salvador Dali amongst others. Met with universal critical acclaim, works from the Magic Period truly launched Tàpies' practice in Europe and the United States. In El Monument, a range of mystical motifs imbue the dark canvas with a strange, mystical sense of wonder. The fine structure-like lines delicately scratched into the surface of the painting predate Tàpies' iconic heavily textured works in which he drew large incisions into sand. Even though Tàpies would ultimately abandon the attention to detail displayed in El Monument and other early works in favour of a more process-based approach in the following decades, the Magic Period - and its highly evocative occult potential - still very much sketched the blueprint for Tàpies' highly textural and abstract latest practice. Exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1952, shortly before the artist married his wife, El Monument was executed at a critical time in his career: 'The years 1952 and 1953 were crucial, both for my love life and for my work. [...] Little by little, almost unconsciously, I had left behind and finally lost the worries that Soviet aesthetic principles, inspired by the famous Jdanov, had caused me... In questions of art and by an inclination that is difficult to explain, my instinct took me more and more along solitary paths I saw the necessity of going deeper in my investigation of the specific possibilities of the visual medium of colour and form in freedom.' (the artist in: A Personal Memoir: Fragments for an Autobiography, Barcelona 2009, p. 264).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
