ϒA gold coloured multi gem set bangle by Natalia Josca, the central double hinged panel set with an oval cabochon garnet in a raised collet setting, on a granulated and enamel ivy leaf ground, between two panels set with oval cabochon emeralds and garnets with applied flower heads, to the curved panels set with further oval cabochon garnets and emeralds, with vari cut coral, turquoise and lapis lazuli, with seed pearl borders, the clasp composed of interlinking loops and a pin, engraved NJ and 22K, 5.7cm wide, 166.3g gross Copied from a pair of bracelets, Greek, 1st century B.C, known as the Olbia bracelets. These bracelets were acquired by Peter Mavrogordato in the the Summer of 1913 with the provenance that they had been found in a tomb in Olbia not long beforehand. The bracelets are unusual due to their amalgamation of indigenous and Greek styles; Olbia, now part of the Crimea was once an ancient Greek colony where Greek settlers lived side by side with the native inhabitants and so these bracelets are a perfect hybrid of the Greek and domestic style.See Jewellery: Ancient to Modern, (The Viking Press, 1980), pp. 94-98, fig. 283 This bracelet was illustrated in the American publication, Adornment Magazine (The Magazine of Jewelry & Related Arts), in an interview given by Natalia Josca about her jewellery in 2005, and was described as the Baltimore Bracelet by Natalia in that article. CONDITION REPORT: The large foliate bangle has English hallmarks and is in generally good condition with no issues other than snapped safety chain. Chain present. The smaller foliate bangle has English hallmark to clasp and also stamped “925”, tarnished in places, safety chain intact, no significant dings or damage. The shaped bangle is a little misshapen but structurally sound. Stamped “925”. The fourth bangle has English hallmarks and stamped “925” and in generally good order. The weights respectively are 16.4 grams, 8.3 grams, 14.2 grams and 18.1 grams.
