Lot 223

1959 Jaguar XK150 3.8-Litre Drophead CoupéRegistration no. XAB 264Chassis no. S827329•One of 662 right-hand drive drophead coupés made•Five registered owners from new•Restored and well maintained•Large history fileFootnotes:This Jaguar XK150 drophead coupé was originally supplied by Horton's Garage, Redditch to the owners of Astwood Bank Farm, Redditch, and remained in the same family ownership until bought by one David De Saxe in December 1986. The original engine was 3.4-Litre but this was replaced early on by Jaguar, this change is recorded in the buff log book. Correspondence shows that Mrs Shirley-Priest had put the car away when her only son died, and when aged 87 decided to sell it 'to remove the sad reminder of better days'. On 22nd December 1998, Mr de Saxe sold 'XAB 264' to one A P Spender of Lockeridge, Wiltshire, who in turn sold it to Twyford Moors, the well-known Jaguar dealership. Previous owner Mr Harry Richardson purchased the car in August 2000. A great deal of money had been spent by David De Saxe on works including replacement of the hood shortly after he bought the car, while invoices show that in 1993 some £22,000 was spent on a major 'body off' restoration by Rees Bros of Aldershot, carried out at approximately 60,500 miles. There is also a photographic record of the restoration on file. During the body rebuild the underside was completely under-sealed, while winter servicing included Waxoyling and steam-cleaning. Noteworthy features include later-type rear lights (fitted for safety reasons); a restored period radio, converted to FM reception; and a tailored hood bag.In 1996 the engine was overhauled by well-known Jaguar specialist R G Bates of Birkenhead at a cost of £3,845, which included conversion for the use of unleaded petrol. This was carried out at approximately 63,000 miles. There is a substantial quantity of paperwork on file dating back to the beginning of David de Saxe's period of ownership. Nearly all invoices have been retained, and the fastidious service records make interesting reading. Also included is an owner's manual and workshop manual together with a set of tools and the original jack. In the 16 years that Mr Richardson owned the Jaguar it was fully maintained by his brother at his motor engineering business in Barnes, West London. All necessary works were carried out, as evidenced by numerous invoices in the substantial history file. In May 2016, new chromed wire wheels and Avon Turbo Steel tyres from MWS were fitted, while in August 2016 a new mohair hood and lining were installed, and the interior leather replaced/refurbished at the Trimming Centre in Lewes, East Sussex. The car was always kept in a modern, dry garage in ideal conditions. All expired tax discs and MoT certificates have been retained, supporting the current recorded mileage of 85,157. The current vendor (its fifth registered owner) purchased the XK150 at Bonhams' Olympia sale in December 2016 (Lot 315). At that time it was stated that: 'it runs extremely well and is a joy to drive. Considering the car's age, its performance is remarkable and motorway speeds are maintained with ease. Directional stability is said to be excellent, oil pressure good, and the cooling system has always, in the owner's experience, been entirely effective. Virtually no oil is consumed, though there is a small oil leak from the rear of the engine - an original design fault. The brakes are very efficient, having been up-rated at some time in the past, while the twin stainless steel exhausts emit a healthy throb.'Due to a number of factors not connected with the car, the owner has been unable to enjoy it in the way he had intended and in consequence it has been SORN'd for the entire period of ownership. Since purchase the XK has been carefully started on a regular basis and dry-stored in a Carcoon. In 2018 the fuel pump and windscreen washer unit were replaced and minor works carried out to the under-sealing. At the same time the vehicle was carefully inspected, checked and an MoT certificate issued. In short: this is a very attractive Jaguar XK150 supported by an extensive collection of invoices, letters, JDHT Certificate and other documentation, constituting an exceptionally detailed provenance. 1967 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage Sports SaloonRegistration no. WJH 333E (see text)Chassis no. DB6/3091/REngine no. 400/3058/V•One of only three DB6 Vantage models with automatic transmission•First owned by Lord Macpherson of Drumochter•Well specified•Present ownership since 2007•Offered at No ReserveFootnotes:Superseding the DB5 in 1965, the DB6 was the last of the long-running line of David Brown 'DB' models, and as such is considered by some aficionados of the marque to be the last of the 'real' Aston Martins. Aware that increased headroom and legroom was required to extend the car's appeal to a wider market and make it a true four-seater, the factory lengthened the wheelbase by 4' while at the same time re-styling the DB6 to incorporate a more raked windscreen, raised roofline and reshaped rear quarter-windows.One of only three Aston Martin DB6 Vantage models completed with Borg Warner automatic transmission, this example comes with a guarantee form copy revealing that it was built for the UK market and delivered new via Cheapside Motor Co (HR Owen) to Lord Macpherson of Drumochter, JP. The car was ordered in Mink with Dark Blue Connolly leather trim, and was first registered as 'WJH 333E'. In addition to the Vantage engine and automatic transmission, the Aston also left the factory equipped with power steering; chrome road wheels; heated rear screen; 3-ear hubcaps; power aerial; Coolair air conditioning; safety belts; Motorola radio; Fiamm horns; Marchal quartz iodine fog and spot lamps; and an extra vanity mirror on the driver's sun visor. The total cost was £3,232 2s 6d plus £873 2s 6d Purchase Tax. A boot-mounted CD player was added subsequently. The current owner purchased the DB6 at the Bonhams Olympia Sale in December 2007 (Lot 703). The 2007 catalogue description states: 'On file are receipts from specialists Aston Workshop, Puddleduck and Rikki Cann recording refurbishment work carried out including attention to front and rear wings, rear sill and both door bottoms; renewing pedal support and master cylinder mounting brackets (2003); changing brake discs and fitting Aeroquip hoses all round; fitting reconditioned master cylinder and Vantage carburettor overhaul kit (2005); and overhaul of steering rack (2006).' Unfortunately, the documentation for these works has since been lost, as have the eight MoT certificates mentioned in the description, the last of which was obtained immediately prior to the 2007 sale. Exported in 2007, the Aston comes with a copy of its last UK V5C Registration Certificate recording the owner when issued as Christopher Jones of Kent. The car will need to be reregistered with the DVLA should the successful purchaser wish to resume using it in the UK and will be subject to the low import duty rate of 5%. The Vantage has received a cursory engineer's inspection and with some effort the car started although is not running well and the fuel pump is seized. As it has been stored in recent years, it will require further recommissioning before being returned to the road.Lot to be sold without reserve. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * N* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.N MOTORCYCLESIf purchased by a UK resident, this machine is subject to a NOVA declaration, whilst the responsibility of submitting the NOVA rests with the Buyer to do so, Bonhams will facilitate the process by engaging an agent (SHIPPIO) to undertake the NOVA and C88 (customs) application if applicable on the Buyer's behalf. 1939 MG VA Drophead CoupéCoachwork by Salmons (Tickford)Registration no. FUV 918Chassis no. 2323*Rare pre-war MG model*Present ownership since 1983*Braking system professionally overhauled in June 2020*Bills availableLaunched at the 1936 Motor Show, the VA was the second all-new MG model to be introduced following the company's acquisition by Morris Motors and its subsequent reorganisation. It was a scaled-down version of the SA, first seen the previous year, which had caused a certain amount of consternation amongst enthusiasts who feared an abandonment of virtues embodied by the marque's nimble sports cars. They need not have worried, for although based on the Wolseley Super Six and aimed at the luxury car market, the SA received sufficient input from MG founder and designer Cecil Kimber to transform it into a car worthy of the famous octagon badge. Likewise the VA, or 1½-Litre, which shared its 1,548cc four-cylinder overhead valve engine with the Morris 12/4 and Wolseley 12/48. As installed in the VA, this unit featured twin SU carburettors and produced 54bhp, but as the car weighed over a ton, acceleration was necessarily leisurely. Nevertheless, the VA could cruise comfortably at 60mph and had a genuine top speed of over 75mph with more to come from the tourer with the windscreen folded flat. Synchromesh made its appearance on 3rd and top gears - the first time that this innovation had been seen in an MG saloon. A Tickford-bodied drophead coupé and Charlesworth-bodied open tourer completed the range. By the time production ceased in 1939, 2,407 VAs of all types had left the factory. This particular VA drophead coupé, chassis number '2323', comes with an old-style continuation logbook of 1952 listing Mrs Rosamund Elizabeth Campbell of Northamptonshire as owner at that time followed by the current vendor, who acquired the MG in 1983. There are various invoices on file issued by marque specialists SVW Services and Classic MG Services for work carried out and parts supplied over the years, the most recent relating to an overhaul of the braking system in June 2020. We are advised by the vendor that the only modification from factory specification is the fitting of new and improved shock absorbers (originals available), and that the central front spotlight will be refitted prior to sale. Finished in black with brown leather interior and beige hood, this rare pre-war MG is described by the private vendor as in generally good condition and comes with a V5C Registration Certificate. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A 1934 Alvis Speed Twenty SC Tourer by Vanden PlasReg No. BLX277Car No. 16749 Chassis No. 11926Engine No. 13497 Body No. 3278Green with Tan leather interior and tan hood / sidescreens.Odometer. 70,234 milesThe Speed Twenty model was one of the finest and most successful pre-war Alvis models. With its powerful 2.7 litre OHV ‘straight six’ engine it allowed for smooth high speed motoring in conjunction with its all synchromesh gear box.A total of 289 chassis were constructed of which 21 carried this tourer design. It is believed today there are only 10 of this Vanden Plas design that survive. This car was first delivered to London main agent Charles Follet on the 5th October 1934, being first registered in February 1935.A long term owner (1970 to 2006) had this car comprehensively rebuilt through 1987 to 1989 in what can only be described as a ‘full nut and bolt’ restoration.During this restoration the car was adapted to run on coil ignition only and a Modern oil filter was fitted.Clearly, this car has been cherished by all its owners since the restoration, the accompanying history file records both pre restoration and post restoration maintenance. Unfortunately, due to this sale being as a result of a deceased estate we cannot provide details of works undertaken in recent years but the DVLA provide MOT history online up until 2013.From our inspection and evaluation of this car we have established that the pedal arrangement has been re-engineered to a conventional right hand foot throttle.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report: Chip to leading edge of rear offside wing.Small paint chip to the same wing.Chip to back where boot latch has caught frame.Paintwork otherwise generally excellent.Car runs well and improves as it warms up - has previously stood for approx 2.5 years.Upholstery good with minor extremity wear only.Dash is fully restored.Hood good, no tears and action good.Chrome generally excellent with minor pitting on windscreen surround only.Lamps and radiator excellent.

1949 Land Rover Series One.Registration Number TAS 185,Chassis number R8666588,Engine number 866633, Odometer 37680.This Series 1, 80" left the factory in June 1949. It is in exceptional and original condition throughout with factory original gaps and no major flaws visible. No filler is evident and the panels are remarkable for a Land Rover of this age. Inner wings, engine compartment etc., are all in good order and the rear floor is straight suggesting the vehicle had only ever had light use in its 72 years.Lights are of the correct original early Lucas type and in good order. Vintage Cibie dipping spotlights were fitted at a later date. The wire hinged door tops are in exceptional condition as are the hood and framework. Lightly used Avon Traction tyres fitted. It is extremely rare to find original seats in an early Series 1. This example retains the now obsolete, original pattern vinyl with Dunlopillo foam bases. The instruments are correct and in excellent original order. The dash retains early features such as the illuminated "oil" light, red tipped 20/20 ammeter and correct and rare panel light switch. Steering wheel, bakelite horn push and dip switch assembly are complete, original and very well presented. A working Smiths heater and windscreen demister vents are non original but sympathetically fitted. A correct early single wiper is fitted. The Land Rover is also highly desirable in that it retains its original "matching numbers" engine and running gear. The 1595cc engine runs beautifully suggesting that the low recorded mileage of 37680 is pretty much correct. Our vendor is the fourth owner and has owned the vehicle for nine years. Having researched the history of this Series 1 with the two previous owners, the original owner who had it for 26 years in Sussex did an estimated 32000 miles. The second owner, an enthusiast, resprayed the Land Rover probably around 1978. That owner, lived for many years on the Isle of Mull and used the vehicle rarely on an Isle where big road trips don't happen! The only existing MOT shows mileage at 36990 on 17.12.2003. Usage with this second owner plus the third owner in Suffolk and the vendor are estimated at only 5000-6000 miles. The last three owners ensured the vehicle was stored under cover. Our opinion is that the current mileage is likely to be correct underlining the uniqueness of this Series 1.The chassis number R8666588 places this as one of the first ever deep bronze green Land Rovers and the lights behind the grille and ring-pull gearbox highlight this as an early vehicle.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report:Bulkhead in good condition with no apparent repairs.Chassis good.Has been re-sprayed at some point.

This vehicle has been owned by our vendor since 1980, being garaged and covered for almost its entire ownership and having only completed approx 300 miles during this time. The vehicle comes with a folder of invoices and receipts, original stamped registration book, The vehicle was last MOT'd September 1999, and at this time and in the preceding few years it was extensively restored by Davenport Cars of Sandy, Beds, with receipts detailing the works. These restorations cost in excess of £30,000.The 1959 Jaguar XK150 drophead coupé replaced the XK120 & the XK140, and was the predecessor to the E-type Jaguar. This rare and beautiful classic sports touring model was built in Coventry in Jaguar’s glowing era, and only 69 right hand versions were produced. Top speed was 132mph, with the 3.4 litre engine taking 7.8 seconds to reach 60mph. Lot 3430

A 1968 Sunbeam Alpine Series V GTReg No. NLY978FChassis No. B395016307GTODGreen with Black interiorOdometer 89,260 milesThe original Alpine of 1953 to 1955 had not sold as well as the Rootes Group had hoped, their next attempt was much more successful. At the time of the Series I Alpine’s introduction Rootes had to compete with sports cars such as the MG MGA and Triumph TR3A which were already selling well in the USA.The new Alpine of 1959 did away with a heavy chassis and utilised a modern underpan from the Hillman Husky II suitably strengthened by cruciform bracing with the then current running gear of the Sunbeam Rapier. The most distinctive design feature of this new model were the prominent tail fins on the rear wings and a modern wrap around windscreen together with wind up windows which were absent on their competitors cars. The Alpine was well received by both the press and public alike, Rootes took the opportunity to improve this design on a regular basis which ended with their final series in 1965 which continued in production until early 1968.Our car was one of the last produced and was first registered on the 1st February 1968. Being the GT model, it is fitted with an elegant hardtop, wood finish to the dashboard and +2 configuration. The GT version was sold as an upmarket model so was never fitted with the soft-top or its mechanism although many owners over the years have retro-fitted these items. The 1725cc engine with 5 main bearings is fitted together with twin semi-downdraught Zenith carburettors and has the overdrive gearbox fitted. This car underwent a major body restoration in 1990 involving professional repairs with new repair panels to all four inner and outer wings, sills and door bottoms, all finished with lead loading and finally repainted in 2 pack paint. We believe that the mileage shown is correct as the many MOT certificates on file going back to the 1970’s together with those available on line up to 2015 appear to corroborate this. Clearly, this Alpine has been much cherished by its long term husband and wife owners, the car presents very well today with minimal cosmetics required to return it to mint condition.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report:Car runs well.We believe colour to be original; VIN plate states 86 Forest Green. No soft top conversion.Roof easily detachable and retachable, clips are good.Vendor has owned for over 40 years and has an extensive folder of history. although very little from the 5 years. No evidence of clutch replacement.Door gaps excellent.Chassis excellent.Bodywork generally very good, some corrosion to rear window sill and top of offside wing. Some crazing to perspex quarter lights.Upholstery good, no tears or major marks.Dashboard tarnished and faded along lower edge.Yellow box in engine bay is part of electronic ignition.Chrome good with minor tarnishing only, except for the rear bumper and wheel caps which have significant tarnishing.Rubbers around windscreen with some perishing.

Lot 717

Classically presented in Opalescent Silver Blue with chrome wires, this lovely Mk 2 has obviously been looked after. Subject of an older restoration but still presenting very well Finished in Opalescent Silver Blue with a smart light grey leather interior Owned by our vendor, a Main Board Director of Jaguar Cars, for four years Just four previous keepers and a mere 44,739 miles from new supported by an in-depth history file It would appear that the previous owner spent some £11,000 on maintenance and improvements Recently fitted with a new radiator fitted along with some rear seat belts and a small service The retrospectively titled Mark 1 - Jaguar's first unitary construction saloon - was replaced in October 1959 by the closely related, albeit extensively revised, Mark 2. Slimmer windscreen pillars and deeper side windows greatly enlarged the Mark 2's glass area, and the deletion of its predecessor's full-sized rear wheel spats allowed the rear track to be widened, a move which increased roll resistance and stability. Otherwise, the running gear remained much the same as before, with independent front suspension by wishbones and coil springs, leaf-sprung live rear axle, and Dunlop servo-assisted disc brakes (optional at first on the Mark 1 but standard from November 1957) on all four wheels. A redesigned dashboard with speedometer and rev-counter ahead of the driver and the six toggle switches and four minor gauges grouped centrally, established Jaguar's layout for years to come. According to the Jaguar Heritage Certificate supplied by the vendor, 288 AVA was manufactured on the 9th of March 1961, distributed by Ritchies of Glasgow and first owned by A G McFadden & Co Ltd of Glasgow. Finished in sparkling Opalescent Silver Blue with a gently-patinated Light Grey hide interior, this 3.4-litre, manual gearbox with overdrive example has been enjoyed by just five keepers in total, the current being a Main Board Director of Jaguar Cars, and has clearly been cosseted all its life. The radiator was replaced and rear seat belts installed in 2019 along with a full service by Clarke’s Jaguar and Classic Motor Cars Ltd. (CMC) of Shropshire to the tune of £3,200. Prior to our vendor, the previous two owners entrusted the car to Classic Motor Cars for regular maintenance and there are invoices in the file going back to 2011 detailing some £23,000 of investment suggesting that this lovely Mk2 has been looked after with no expense spared. The car is supplied with an interesting history file containing a Mk 2 Operating, Maintenance and Service Handbook along with a selection of old MOTs and a hand-written booklet from previous keepers detailing work carried out over time, a nice touch. Having covered just 44,739 miles from new, supported by the documented history, this venerable Jaguar has not travelled far in its 60 years and would be a welcome addition to any collection, however, we feel that it should really be out and about, doing the things that sporting Jaguars from the Sixties do best.SpecificationMake: JAGUARModel: MK2Year: 1961Chassis Number: 154373DNRegistration Number: 288 AVATransmission: ManualEngine Number: KG7515/8Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 46000 MilesMake: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 726

Looking fabulous in Capri Blue, this sparkling DB6 benefits from an upgraded 4-speed auto box and a comprehensive history file.Dating from 1966, DB6/2563/R was delivered new to H.W motors Ltd. for its first owner, J.F.P TateFinished from new in Capri Blue with Dark Blue Connolly hide and dark blue carpetsThe accompanying Aston Martin Heritage Trust Certificate confirms the car was right-hand drive and fitted with a Borg-Warner, 4-speed automatic gearboxFurther optioned with Chrome Wire Wheels, 3-eared spinners, Fiamm horns and Avon TurbospeedsThe automatic four-speed gear box has received the 'Chapman' upgrade offering seamless gear changesFull and interesting ownership history. With our private vendor for the last seven yearsFull matching numbers, factory spec and in a fabulous colour. A lovely example The culmination of Aston Martin's long-running line of DB six-cylinder sports saloons, and thus considered by many to be the last 'real' Aston, the DB6 was introduced in 1965, updating the DB5. Although recognisably related to the Touring-styled DB4 of 1958, the DB6 abandoned the Carrozzeria Touring-developed 'Superleggera' body structure of its predecessors in favour of conventional steel fabrication whilst retaining the aluminium outer panels.Increased rear-seat space was the prime DB6 objective so the wheelbase was now four inches longer than before, resulting in an extensive restyle with a more-raked windscreen, raised roofline and reshaped rear quarter windows. Opening front quarter-lights made a reappearance but the major change was at the rear where a 'Kamm tail' with spoiler improved the aerodynamics, greatly enhancing stability at high speeds. These many dimensional changes were integrated most successfully, as the DB6's overall length increased by only two inches. The Tadek Marek-designed six-cylinder engine had been enlarged to 3,995cc for the preceding DB5 and remained unchanged. Power output on triple SU carburettors was 282bhp, rising to 325bhp in Vantage specification, complete with triple Webers. Borg-Warner automatic transmission was offered alongside the standard ZF five-speed gearbox, and for the first time, there was optional power-assisted steering. High profile owners in the early days included HRH Prince Charles, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Twiggy and Peter Sellers.DB6/2563/R was delivered new to H.W motors Ltd for J.F.P Tate, Esq. finished in Capri Blue with Dark Blue Connolly hide (VM 3282) and dark blue carpets. Although subsequently resprayed, the Aston is still presented today in the same Capri Blue with its very nicely aged original interior. The Aston Martin Heritage Trust Certificate confirms the specification being right-hand drive and fitted with a Borg-Warner, 4-speed automatic gearbox plus non-standard equipment including chrome roadwheels, heated rear window, three-eared hub spinners, Fiamm horns, a powered aerial and Avon Turbospeed tyres. The car was in daily use early on in its life and regularly serviced and maintained including a cylinder head overhaul and front suspension rebuild in 1967. It is still matching numbers, today, unlike many DB6s.The car's second owner was a Mr Pitkethly in 1984 who sold it, in 1992, to a Mr Hine who, in turn, later sold the DB6 to Le Riche 'Automobile Restorers' of Jersey in 2002. A little later, Le Riche were persuaded to part with the Aston by a Mr Hoy of Jersey (Reg. J 6929) who kept the vehicle until its export out of Jersey in December 2009.The next change of ownership was to Aston Martin Works Ltd. in April 2014, who sold it to the owner prior to our vendor. He appears to have cherished the car judging by its lovely overall condition today, and covered less than 600 miles in nearly 4 years. This car retains much of its originality, character and is still on its original number plate. It's matching numbers throughout and presented in the original colour of Capri Blue, a rare hue for a DB6 but one that really suits it making the big GT look slimmer and lighter somehow and will, without a doubt, turn heads as it continues to age gracefully. It is also noted that the automatic four-speed gear box has received the 'Chapman' upgrade, and this is very clear when you experience the smoothness of the shifts.OPC 308D is supplied with a fascinating history file direct from the current private owner who has had it for the last seven years, covering very few journeys but all of them memorable we are assured! The history file includes a Heritage Trust Certificate confirming both the original factory specification and matching numbers status.SpecificationMake: ASTON MARTINModel: DB6Year: 1966Chassis Number: DB62563RRegistration Number: OPC3 08DTransmission: Auto 4 SpeedEngine Number: 400-2461 Make: Interior Colour: Blue LeatherClick here for more details and images
