Lot 256

Supplied new by Henlys in late 1934, this well-travelled SS1 is fresh from long-term ownership and appears to only need some light recommissioning.Forerunner of the 'Jaguar' marque, 'SS' originally stood for the Swallow Sidecar & Coachbuilding Company, which had been founded in Blackpool, England by William Walmsley in 1922. The company branched out into motor manufacture in 1926, its first major success being an attractive sports saloon on the Austin Seven chassis. The design was the work of Walmsley's business partner, William Lyons, whose future Jaguar creations would confirm his reputation as one of the British motor industry's most gifted stylists. The SS1, launched in 1932, is a close-coupled coupé based on the Standard Ensign 16hp. The chassis and body were designed by Lyons; a long bonnet, tiny passenger compartment and helmet-type front wings imply the ultimate in high performance of the time and this is what ultimately created a blueprint for Jaguars of the future, combining sporting good looks with a better-than-average specification. Indeed, so successful was Lyons' new venture that production of Swallow-bodied cars ceased altogether in 1933, and SS Cars Limited was formed, initially as a subsidiary of the Swallow sidecar-building business. For 1934 the SS1 gained a new wide-track chassis and slightly enlarged Standard engines of 2,143cc and 2,663cc, while the body - now available in four different configurations - underwent yet another restyle. In this, its final form, the SS1 remained in production until 1936, by which time 2,503 examples of this ultimate version had been made. The final assembly of this Swallow Sports One (SS1) Tourer on to its Standard Motor Company rolling chassis (#245816) was completed on the 17th December 1934 and, as a late 1934 Model, it benefited from a wider track and a synchromesh gearbox. Finished in Birch Grey with a green interior and a green soft top and powered by a 2,663cc 68bhp straight-six. It was despatched to Henlys, registered MG 3624 and onward to a, rather proud we imagine, Mr L Garton of Surrey.Within the history file there is a ‘Buff’ logbook which lists a further four owners, the last one being a Mr Michael Roberts of Huddersfield, who appears to have written a running commentary on the maintenance of the car from 1981 until 1985. The car at this point was painted red, so presumably had been refinished between 1934 and his purchase. There appears to be a small gap in the car’s history until 1994/5 when it was exported to Germany when its keeper is listed as Herr Frederick Rausch of Langscheid. There is a raft of invoices for works completed between then and c.2008 along with some photographs detailing what looks like an engine rebuild. At this point the car carried the registration plate MK 06333. The SS then returned to the UK and joined a large private Collection, where it remained until recently. We are unsure of exactly when the car’s current silver and silver grey two-tone finish was applied, but it still presents well today. The odometer is reading 8,692 miles which we assume is 108,692 but can’t warrant. The lovely period interior is trimmed in Burgundy Leather with Art Deco ‘sunburst’ door cards and sports its original steering wheel and dashboard including the combined 100mph speedometer and 5,000rpm tach. Externally, the car is just what you would hope to find with decent silver/silver grey paintwork, running boards, chrome wire wheels wrapped in Firestone ‘whitewall’ tyres, a fold-down windscreen, big Lucas 165 headlamps and a chrome badge bar with an early AA badge. The SS is supplied with a large A4 history file containing details of previous keepers, old MOTs etc. and, as mentioned earlier, a lot of information from Herr Rausch during his ownership. Having been in storage for several years, the car will require a certain amount of recommissioning and we invite and encourage interested parties to view this lovely 1930s Tourer and form their own opinion.SpecificationMake: SWALLOWModel: SS1Year: 1934Chassis Number: 248516Registration Number: MG 3624Transmission: ManualEngine Number: 248501Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 8692 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Burgundy LeatherClick here for more details and images

Lot 264

Fully restored in the past, this is a fine, large-engined Vintage car in excellent running order and fitted with very rare coachwork.'The 20/60 was considered by many to be far superior to the Rolls Royce 20hp at a chassis price some 25% less, and it is recorded that Henry Royce communicated from his home in Le Canadel in the South of France to those in Derby, 'keep an eye on what is going on at Sunbeam's, with a particular regard to this model.' - Bruce Dowell, Sunbeam: The Supreme CarThe arrival of designer Louis Coatalen at Sunbeam in 1909, and the pursuit of an effective competitions programme, enabled Sunbeam to establish a formidable reputation prior to WWI, its superbly made products enjoying a reputation rivalling that of the best from Alvis and Bentley thereafter.Introduced at the 1923 Olympia Motor Show and priced at £950 for the tourer model, the first 20hp Sunbeam of the post-war era enjoyed a production life in its initial form of only two years, being superseded by a new Twenty in 1926. The first Twenty featured a stout chassis frame and was powered by a 3,181cc overhead-valve 'six. This engine retained separate cylinder block and crankcase castings, and was fed by a Claudel Hobson carburettor mounted on the off-side while the auxiliaries, including water pump, dynamo and magneto, sat on the near-side. The right-hand change gearbox incorporated four forward speeds and reverse gear, with 'torque tube' drive to the rear axle, while the Twenty's suspension was typical of the day, with half-elliptic springs at the front and cantilever springs at the rear. According to Dowell, only 1,560 of the early-type Twenty were produced, of which only 45-or-so survive. Most of Sunbeam's 20/60 models were bodied at the factory, however this elegant example has been 'suited and booted' by Brainsby of Peterborough. There were several other Sunbeams bodied by Brainsby in this period, but most were open tourers, making this Doctors Coupé a notable exception. The coachwork is rakish and desirable with the hood easily folding back for convertible motoring and to the rear is a spacious dickey seat for two additional passengers. The car was subject to a body-off restoration in the late 1980s with a photographic record being kept, and since then it's has been used at home and abroad including an ascent of the mighty Stelvio pass in Italy. During recent ownerships, it's been continually fettled and improved. The recipient of substantial expenditure, and it shows. It's finished in a verdant leaf green over a lovely shade of pastel green and the black hood is well-lined, in good order and folds back easily after releasing two catches. The interior is upholstered in a lovely burgundy leather throughout, with just the right amount of ageing to feel like a favourite arm chair, and  the woodwork is equally fine with a dashboard that extends forwards to the delightfully raked Vee windscreen. A large Klaxon is fitted to the bulkhead next to an original brass Pyrex fire extinguisher, with a more modern item stowed in the tool box that sits atop the nearside running board. Under the bonnet, the 3-litre six is well detailed and tidy and we understand starts readily and exhibits really strong performance running easily in modern traffic. This is a fine, rare, large-engined vintage car that appears to be in first-rate running condition with a strong, powerful engine and far more sporting character than an equivalent Rolls-Royce of the period. It's a good looking car fitted with rare, possibly unique, coachwork and would be welcome anywhere.SpecificationMake: SUNBEAMModel: 20/06 SHORT CHASSIS DROPHEAD COUPÉYear: 1925Chassis Number: 1704EDRegistration Number: RK 3517Transmission: ManualEngine Number: 1795DDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: Burgundy LeatherClick here for more details and images

1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Dual Cowl Open Tourer Transmission: manualMileage:9064In 1925, the 'New Phantom', with its overhead-valve engine and four-wheel brakes was introduced. The example offered today left the factory in October 1928 for coachbuilders Arthur Mulliner to be fitted with coachwork for its first owner, Lord Hillingdon of Paulerspury, Northamptonshire. (A photograph of the finished car appears in 'Those Elegant Rolls-Royce' by Lawrence Dalton). In the post-war years, it fell into disrepair and was finally taken off the road in 1961. After lying unused for over 40 years, the car was then purchased in 2002 by the previous owner who set about returning '83WR' to its former glory. This most elegant example has have been the subject of an extensive restoration over the years with the engine rebuilt from the ground up by noted Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists, Ristes, in 2003. The cylinder blocks were rebored and honed to +040" with oversized pistons fitted, top and bottom faces skimmed and waterways cleared with external surfaces stove enamelled as original. The crankshaft was ground to undersize with new white metal bearings fitted. Oilways were cleaned out and new plugs fitted with new white metal bearings to con-rods and new camshafts fitted. The bottom face has also been skimmed flat with new valve guides, exhaust valves and rocker faces built up and re-profiled. The slipper drive was re-lined and set to the correct torque setting with the oil pump reconditioned. All ancillary items including dynamo, magneto, water-pump etc were also fully re-conditioned and finished as per original. The carburettor was reconditioned to factory settings with new spark plugs, leads and a freshly stripped and re-conditioned Autovac with all new parts as necessary. The exhaust system was also replaced from manifold to fish-tail tip. The radiator was fitted with a new core and all shutters were nickel plated, new hoses and original pattern clips throughout. Both front and rear spring leaves were separated, cleaned, de-scaled, greased and re-assembled. The rear shock absorbers were dismantled, cleaned and painted with all new leather gaiters fitted to the spring with triple lock panels on the running boards for access. The chassis was also stripped to bare metal with all mechanical items removed, sandblasted, painted and refitted. The Front axle was also sandblasted and painted with kingpins built up and re-machined to size. New bushes and bearings were also fitted, new ball pins fitted to all steering swivel joints and even the steering box was stripped and checked for wear, cleaned and re-assembled. All shock absorbers were stripped, cleaned and painted, worn shafts were built up and re-machined to size. The wheel hubs and bearings were stripped, cleaned and inspected for wear then repacked with grease and reassembled. The cross steering tube and side steering tube swivels were re-set to correct poundage with new leather gaiters. All hubs have dismantled, cleaned and inspected for wear then re-packed with grease and re-assembled. The universal joint in the torque tube has been re-bushed with new leather seal fitted. New linings have been fitted all round and the front drums skimmed. Importantly, for a two tonne car, new brake cables have been fitted both front and rear. The wheels have been dismantled, re-spoked and a stove enamelled finish applied with new tyres and inner tubes including a side-mounted spare. The original Mulliner body has long-since gone to be replaced with a very well-constructed duel-cowl open tourer torpedo coachwork. The frame is Ash with aluminium panels, aluminium wings and a new aluminium firewall. The new bonnet has been built with period-style sliding side vents, nickel silver hinges and rivets which match the handbrake, gear lever and all lighting equipment. The luxurious interior is trimmed in high quality, red leather and contrasting black mohair hood, hoodbag and side-screens. The instrument panel presents with a deep gloss finish and garnish rails. The comprehensive array of instruments themselves have all been with the main ignition and lighting functions also stove-enamelled and re-lettered as have the controls on the steering column. The wiring loom has been replaced with a cotton-braided unit in the original colours and even following the original conduits. The original bell-shaped Lucas headlamps are fitted with main and dipped beam operated through the dash-mounted dimmer switch. Brake lights and indicators are incorporate within sidelights to the front and classic rear divers-helmet rear tail lamps. Even the Klaxon horn has been fully re-conditioned and operational.Needless to say, Wilton carpet can be found at feet level with an additional hinged panel behind the front seat to provide storage for the side-screens. The nickel-plated theme continues with the windscreen frame housing, interior mirror and exterior wing-mirror (carried on the side-mounted spare wheel). Not to mention the rear luggage rack fitted with reconditioned Brooks 'Brexton' trunk. Also supplied is the wheel spanner, bottle jack, starting handle, grease gun, extensive history file and owner's handbook. Lot 198

1958 Austin Healey 100/6 Transmission: manualMileage:2693The Austin Healey 100 was built between 1953 and 1956 by the British Motor Corporation. It was developed by Donald Healey to be produced in-house by Healey's small car company in Warwick and based on Austin A90 Atlantic mechanicals. Healey built a single 'Healey Hundred' for the 1952 London Motor Show and the design impressed Leonard Lord, Managing Director of Austin, so much that a deal was struck with Healey to build it in quantity at Austin's Longbridge factory. The car was renamed the Austin Healey 100. The '100' name comes from Donald Healey who selected the name from the car's ability to reach 100mph as opposed to the Austin Healey 3000 which is named for its 3000cc engine. The final '100' models, 1956's 'BN4' (2+2 seats) and 1958's 'BN6' (two seats) were six-cylinder 100/6 cars. To make room for the occasional seats the wheelbase was increased by two inches. The bonnet had a built-in air scoop and the windscreen no longer folded down.Subject to a full mechanical and bodywork restoration this stunning example was manufactured in 1958. Presented beautifully in green coachwork with a newly trimmed interior in contrasting blood red Nappa leather with new wool carpets and new tonneau cover. Boasting a manual gearbox, this desirable four-seater is UK registered, and the original engine has been uprated and bored out to 3.0 litre, this coupled to a new wiring loom, rebuilt carburettors and a lightened and balanced flywheel, new engine mounts and clutch. The cooling has been uprated with a new aluminium radiator, new fan and new water pump. The fittings are all zinc or stainless steel in the engine bay and the car now also benefits from electronic ignition and disc brakes. A look underneath also gives an indication of the extent of the restoration for what is a great looking car. The most desirable model with the most desirable engine, this example will deliver many more years of driving pleasure with its classic good looks and strong performance this example looks fabulous.

Lot 163

1983 Volkswagen Mk. I Golf GTi Transmission: manualMileage:137000Launched in 1974, the Golf represented a complete break with Volkswagen tradition, yet it would prove as big a sales success as its Beetle predecessor. In GTi form the Golf has become one of the great icons of modern motoring, giving rise to an entirely new class of sporting saloon - the 'hot hatch' - in the process. First seen at the Frankfurt Show in September 1975, the GTi came with a 1.6 litre, fuel-injected, 110bhp engine which, in a car weighing a mere 846 kilos (1,861lbs) resulted in a performance package of a type not seen since the demise of the Mini Cooper 1275 S. Increasing competition from rival manufacturers prompted the introduction of a 1.8 litre GTi in 1982, and although maximum power increased only slightly to 114bhp there was a considerable improvement in mid-range acceleration. This example of the iconic Mk. I Golf GTi was first registered on 4th February 1983 and supplied with the Volkswagen Classic Parts build certificate. Presented in its original colour black with matching trim, the incredible restoration is frankly better than when the car was supplied new, and the car still holds the registration number etched into side windows. Within the history file are significant amounts of invoices for restoration work that has taken place including invoices for the parts fitted including items such as set of period correct Pirelli Cinturato tyres and matching refurbished spare wheel with brand new matching Pirelli tyre, all new braided/zinced fuel lines, top tint windscreen, full carpet set and Zircotec coated inlet manifold, new window seals, correct Sachs suspension and brakes. The engine was subject to a full rebuild including new water pump and cambelt with again photos of work completed. Inside, is a period correct Blaupunkt cassette player discretely modified for Bluetooth connectivity which complements an unmolested and as original as they come example which we are told runs, drives and performs superbly with two sets of keys and all locks on matching key. A new MoT test certificate until July 2024 is included and as our owner asked for a full comprehensive inspection at this time the lack of exhaust heat shields was highlighted which have now been sourced and fitted, other advisories were the front ball joint rubber seals could need replacing, a slight coolant weep and near side wheel bearing, subsequently both front ball joints have been replaced, new heater control valve fitted (coolant leak) and wheel bearing now adjusted so the car is perfect, befitting of a multiple show winning example.Accolades include multiple concourse and show and shine winners in recent years with trophies at events such as VW Festival, Deva Dubs and Rods, VW Breakout and Back 2 Basics for which the trophies are included in the sale. A fully restored original example that is possibly one of the best examples in the UK today.

Lot 234

1973 Porsche 911 Targa Transmission: manualMileage:The original Porsche 911 was introduced in autumn 1963 and manufactured until 1989. It was succeeded by a modified version, internally referred to as Porsche 964, but still sold as Porsche 911, as are current models. Mechanically, the 911 was notable for being rear engine and air-cooled and, from its inception, the 911 was modified both by private teams and the factory itself for racing, rallying and other types of competition. The original 911 series is often cited as the most successful competition car ever, especially when its variations are included; namely the powerful 911 derived 935 which won the 24 Hours Le Mans and other major sports car races outright against prototypes. Of all the derivatives and years in which the 911 was produced the 1973 Targa was perhaps one of the most sought-after, the '73 had the narrower bumpers which are especially popular and deemed more attractive on the early 911 with a style that modern 'restomod' or backdated styles such as Singer replicate allowing top down motoring with the glass back window which the model of course didn't start out with.First registered in August 1973, this 2.4 litre F-Series 911 Targa was delivered to the UK from new and has been comprehensively restored and transformed by Rindt Vehicle Design. In single ownership between 1985 and 2020, as detailed in the history file. Finished in Irish Green, full details of the bodywork and mechanical attention carried out include complete strip, prep and bare-metal repaint in Irish Green, carried out to the highest standards, new nearside floor pan and nearside 'kidney bowl', full interior strip and re-finish in Tartan, new dash trim, new inner and outer sill protectors, fresh chrome bumper mouldings, new front and rear windscreen rubbers, sun visors, new horns and fitment of new Targa roof seals. The engine was removed from the vehicle, stripped, serviced and fitted with new upper and lower cam covers, new oil pipes where required and repairs to the wiring loom undertaken. This is now a beautifully restored example of a period air-cooled Porsche that attracts attention wherever it goes, viewing is highly recommended.

2009 Jaguar X-Type Estate Ex-HM Queen Elizabeth II Transmission: automaticMileage:72975The Jaguar X-Type is a front-engine, all-wheel/front-wheel drive compact executive car manufactured and marketed from 2001 to 2009. In addition to offering Jaguar's first estate in series production, the X-Type would ultimately introduce its first diesel engine, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive configuration. The X-Type was developed during the period when Jaguar was owned by Ford as a division of its Premier Automotive Group (PAG) (1999-2009) and marked Jaguar's entry into the critical compact executive segment. The estate was the first Jaguar model designed by Ian Callum. From its saloon counterpart, the design revised 420 tooled parts and 58 stampings for all components rearward of the windscreen, adding 150 pounds. This fantastic piece of Royal history is presented in Emerald Fire with Barley leather interior and the first owner was HM Queen Elizabeth II. This is confirmed by its original booklet stating its registration as PYN IF which can also be seen in photos with HM the Queen at the wheel. It comes with a sunroof, automatic transmission, electric windows, climate control, a good service history, Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate and has been well maintained. The Royal Family might have a long history with Bentley state limousines, but they love Jaguars as well. Although the late Queen Elizabeth II was seen behind the wheel of several cars during her long reign, her favourite seems to be the Land Rover Defender. She had a particular liking for this model, but when that was unavailable, she had a back-up car, a Jaguar X-Type Estate. In the pictures available on the internet, you can see HM Queen Elizabeth II driving this very car with Her Majesty wearing sunglasses and a headscarf/hat which was so typical. She looked happy and healthy, leaving Windsor Castle behind her and at the wheel of the Jaguar, driving up the Long Walk. From 2004 to 2009, the X-Type Estate wasn't among the most desirable models the brand ever built but who would have thought this would be one of Queen Elizabeth II's go-to vehicles? It came with two fuel options and the biggest engine, though, was petrol. It was a 3.0 litre V6 engine, which was the option Queen Elizabeth II had for this particular car. This Jaguar was purchased from one of our previous auctions for the sole reason to be then sold for Comic Relief and raise money for charity which it did to the tune of £300,000. The present owner won the car and is now selling it and has generously decided to offer a percentage of the proceeds to Great Ormand Street hospital for sick children. This surely is a car for the serious collector or Royalist and with a provenance which is impossible to match, this is unique! Please note that the private registration that you may have seen online or viewed in any publications is not being sold with the car.Photos of the Queen credited to Jim Bennett

1972 Ford Transit Mk. I Transmission: manualMileage:99Ford's ubiquitous Transit range needs little introduction. Launched in 1965, it has been Europe's best-selling light commercial vehicle for the last 40 years, and is now into its fourth-generation and Mk.7 incarnation. More intriguingly, in the 1970s, no less than 95 per cent of robberies employing a vehicle apparently involved a Transit of some description! Famed for bringing car-like handling, drive-ability and comfort to the van world, it was the ideal base for all manner of conversions, including motor caravans. Power in the early models was supplied by 1.7 or 2.0-litre V4 versions of Ford's Essex powerplant. The suspension was deliberately basic, with live axles front and rear. A wide track provided exceptional stability.Built in 1972, but not registered until 1st February 1973, this Mk. I 'single wheel' Ford Transit presents beautifully having just gone through a full restoration. The body was stripped back to bare metal at which point all necessary repairs were undertaken. This included repairs to the floors, chassis legs, bulk head, doors, windows and windscreen surrounds. The van was then treated to a full respray in Ford Light Blue. Fitted with a later Ford Transit engine along with a five-speed gearbox, the van also benefits from modern vehicle reliability. It has also been subtly upgraded with a hidden removable tow hitch, (which hides behind the rear number plate) and the rear interior has been professionally 'wooded out' by a skilled carpenter to a high standard. The van is reported to 'start on the button' and to run and drive very well. Forming part of a large private collection throughout its restoration, the van was originally intended to be a race support vehicle for the vendors historic racing endeavours and is now only now for sale to free up some space for a new incoming project. These early Mk. I Transits are hard to come by, let alone in such wonderful condition and sympathetically upgraded to be practical and pleasant to drive in modern conditions and as such, is an opportunity not to be missed.
