In 1911, she founded the Russian Academy of Painting and Sculpture and a year later established the Académie Vassilieff which became a meeting place for the Parisian avant-garde.When World War I broke out she transformed her studio into a canteen, which enjoyed growing popularity among intellectuals including Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Amadeo Modigliani, and Chaim Soutine. The venue put on shows, held conferences, literary and musical evenings, and threw legendary parties. Vassilieff's oeuvre was deeply influenced by the Cubist movement that was shaping in Paris at the time. She was most known for her portraits of dancers and her friends, like Picasso and Matisse, as well as her decorative furniture pieces and doll-portraits. In 1925, she created 'Puppet Furniture' for the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts and two years later decorated two pillars of the renown La Coupole brewery. In 1937, she participated at the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Modern Life. * BENNO SCHOTZ RSA (ESTONIAN 1891 - 1984),PETRUSHKAterracotta, signed36cmNote: Petrushka tells the story of the loves and jealousies of three puppets. The three are brought to life by the Charlatan during the 1830 Shrovetide Fair (Maslenitsa) in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Petrushka loves the Ballerina, but she rejects him. She prefers the Moor. Petrushka is angry and hurt, and challenges the Moor. The Moor kills him with his scimitar. Petrushka's ghost rises above the puppet theatre as night falls. He shakes his fist at the Charlatan, then collapses in a second death. Lot includes a 1964 letter to the owner stating that, on enquiry, Schotz had confirmed that the figure was by him, that it was inspired by a performance in Glasgow of the Ballet Petrushka, as one of three in (approximately) 1946.

In addition we believe that he may have appeared as six characters in Captain Scarlet, six characters in Joe 90 and four in Secret Service. Approx. 11 cm.
