A Japanese carved ivory okimono figure, of a puppeteer, holdings his puppet aloft, bears signature to the base, 21cm high, with hardwood stand. (Meiji period 1868-1912) Provenance: Part of a Leicester private family collection by descent and historically known to our auctioneer. The collector, who died pre-WWII, actively accumulated works of art in the 1920s/30s. All enquires to Colin Young.

Willy Drinkall Ventriloquist Dummy, well moulded painted papier-máché head with bulbous nose, teeth with hole for cigarette, raised eyebrows, separate eyelids and eyes, hair with drop down tuff, movement include both eyes move independently, eye lids and lower jaw with dressed body having one log bent arm with rubber moulded hand card torso and lower legs, approx. 53” (135cm) tall. Together with two publicity shots of Jack with Willy Drinkall and a copy of It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vent by Jack Beckitt. Willy Drinkall was Jack’s favourite puppet, whilst appearing in Worthing Jack was practising a fruity voice for one of the famous shoe puppets which was to be a drunk, a fellow entertainer the magician Al Koran suggested it was too good a voice for a mere shoe and should be used instead for a full-sized dummy, Jack agreed and Will Drinkell was the result.
