Gian Carlo Sensani (Italian, 1888-1947) Portrait of Mrs Christine Mavrogordato, oil on canvas, 52 x 42cm (20.28 x 16.38in). Provenance: By descent within the family of the sitter. Gian Carlo Sensani was a painter and wood engraver active in Florence. He was born in San Casciano dei Bagni, Siena, on 26 February 1888. He was self-taught and worked a great deal in the theatre. His work is represented in the Galleria d`Arte Moderna, Rome. He began his career in Rome as a costume designer, working for the Marionette del Teatro dei Piccoli (Children`s Puppet Theatre). He was also a theatre designer (a drawing for scenery in a production of Donizetti`s Elisir d`amore was recently offered for sale by Gonnelli auctioneers, Florence, lot 923, fetching €1200). From 1933, he regularly contributed stage designs to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival, Florence, and later worked for the Scala in Milan (his designs for the stage sets of Prokofiev`s Cinderella were used following his death). Perhaps his greatest artistic contribution was as a wood engraver. Not only did he show these prints in art exhibitions, but they also featured as book illustrations as well as in anthologies of prints. In this connection, it is worth singling out for special mention the whole issue of the journal L`Eroica devoted to his woodcuts, published at the end of 1913. His paintings are generally rare and of interest to only a small, specialist circle of collectors. For the artist`s work, and a major exhibition in 1990, see especially M.Bucci/C.Bartoletti, Gino Carlo Sensani: pittore per il Teatro, 1888-1947. Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence, 1990. The exhibion catalogue was issued by the prestigous Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe of the Uffizi: "Gino Carlo Sensani: Pittore per il Teatro, 1888-1947", exhibition catalogue 28 Aprile-30 Giugno 1990 (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino)., The present portrait shows the influence of Fauvism at this interesting period of Italian art in the early part of the 20th Century. The portrait was painted of Mrs Mavrogordato whilst she was on her wedding trip to Florence on 11 March 1915. Both Mrs Mavrogordato and her husband, John, were patrons of the arts, and great friends of the artist, Mark Gertler, who holidayed with the family regularly at their home in Dorset. We are grateful to Antonio Berni and Nicholas Turner for their assistance with the catalogue entry
