The former King Edward VIII is summoned as Joachim von Ribbentrop’s defence witness at the Nuremberg Trials [NUREMBERG TRIALS]: RIBBENTROP JOACHIM VON (1893-1946) German politician who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nazi Germany 1938-45. A remarkable D.S., J v Ribbentrop, in bold pencil, one page, folio, n.p. (Nuremberg), 25th January 1946, in German. The partially printed (mimeographed) document, completed in typescript, is addressed to the General Secretary of the International Military Tribunal and is a Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness in which Ribbentrop requests that the Duke of Windsor, the former King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom, be summoned to give evidence on his behalf, as 'When presenting his credentials in 1936, von Ribbentrop expressed to the then King Edward VIII the desire of the Reich Chancellor for the closest cooperation between Germany and England. In the course of this audience, King Edward VIII declared that he, too, deemed such a cooperation necessary' and further explaining that such facts are relevant 'To disprove counts I and II of the General Indictment and the respective counts of the special indictments filed up to now'. Countersigned in bold pencil at the foot by Dr. Martin Horn, the Defence Counsel representing Ribbentrop. Accompanied by the official IMT English translation of Ribbentrop's document. Some file holes to the upper edge of each document, light overall age wear and minor traces of professional restoration, otherwise VG, 2 King Edward VIII's beliefs regarding Adolf Hitler and the Nazis have long been the subject of speculation. Many historians have suggested that Hitler was prepared to reinstate the Duke of Windsor as King in the hope of establishing a fascist puppet government in Great Britain after Operation Sea Lord. It is widely believed that the Duke and Duchess (whom the FBI were informed had slept with the German Ambassador in London, Joachim von Ribbentrop, in 1936) sympathised with fascism before and during World War II and were moved to the Bahamas to minimise their opportunities to act on their feelings. Joachim von Ribbentrop was arrested in June 1945 and subsequently convicted and sentenced to death at the Nuremberg Trials for his role in starting World War II in Europe and enabling the Holocaust. On 16th October 1946 he became the first of the Nuremberg defendants to be executed by hanging. Provenance: The present document originated from the archives of Dr. Hans Werner who was responsible for directing the printing of the Record of the Trial of Major War Criminals in 42 volumes and in three different languages (English, French & German) immediately following the Nuremberg Trials.

As noted by the artist, 'due to the heat the men were nude, and yet in full gear. I must admit that the nudity of the two sailors ... didn't derive from memories of the Middle East, which I didn't have, but, from the writings of [Christos] Tsountas in his History of [Ancient] Greek Art. He referred to the ideal nudity of ancient Greek sculpture in general and specifically to that of the 'regiment' of the two Tyrannicides—Harmodius and Aristogeiton—which are stark naked, even though no citizen was in the nude during the Panathenaic Games. The combination of naked and clothed bodies is a Greek invention of the archaic period, which continued throughout the Classical and Hellenistic times to be maintained in certain pictorial forms during the Byzantine era ... and then passing from the Renaissance and Baroque up until the nineteenth century and beyond. It is rare for a pictorial convention to last throughout so many centuries.'4 Set against a dark background interrupted by pronounced vertical elements—a typical Hellenistic-Roman layout also evident in Byzantine church decoration, and shadow-puppet folklore—three sailors, one dressed and two naked, seem integrated into their surrounding space, imbuing this mise-en-scéne with a meditative feel and suggesting balance between clothing and nudity. Simplification, limited colour scheme, confident brushwork, and shallow compositional structure build up a solid edifice of pure forms invested with mystery and allure. The subtle dialogue of forms creates a lyrically interpretative composition, a tranquil world of spiritual purity and shared humanity. As noted by Nobel laureate O. Elytis 'Tsarouchis restored the human body in a land whose age-old civilisation has always been man-centred. Thanks to his paintings, the figures of Hermes, Narcissus, St. Georgios and St. Dimitrios started to live and breathe again and circulate among us.'5 1 Alexander Iolas (1907-1987) was a Greek collector and art dealer. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, he studied piano and dance in Berlin in the 1920s, fled to Paris after Hitler's rise to power, and became friends with prominent members of the avant-garde, including Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. He joined New York's Hugo Gallery as a director in 1944 and in 1955 he collaborated with former dancer Brooks Jackson to co-found Jackson-Iolas Gallery in New York. Soon after, he opened galleries under his own name in several cities around the world. 2 One of his first oils to introduce three-dimensional figures set against a shallow dark backdrop.3 The composition was repeated in two monumental, less painterly oils, The forgotten guard (left and right section), 1956, 210x145cm each section, and The forgotten guard, 1957, 210x145cm, both in private collections. 4 Y. Yiannis Tsarouchis (Greek, 1910-1989)Épicerie à Mytiline signé en grec et daté '65' (en bas à droite)huile sur toile89 x 42cm (35 1/16 x 16 9/16in).Peint en 1965.signed in Greek and dated (lower right)oil on canvasFootnotes:ProvennacePrivate collection, London.LittératureYannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989) Painting, Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation, Athens 1990, no. 316 (illustrated).Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), Eleftherotypia editions, Athens 2009, pp. 118-119 (illustrated).Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation card collection, Athens (illustrated).Yannis Tsarouchis, Dancing in Real Life, Wrightwood 659 Gallery, Chicago 2021, (catalogued, p.228 and illustrated, p. 219).Resonating with echoes of Byzantine art and Pompeian frescoes1, this scrupulous observation of familiar contemporary life is a statement of the artist's resolve in exploring the inner world of Greekness. As noted by poet A. Embeirikos, 'when looking at Tsarouchis's work, one has the immediate impression of looking at Greek painting par excellence, more so than in the work of any other Greek painter, with the exception of Theofilos.'2The linear arrangement of figures in the foreground, set against a flat monochromatic backdrop interrupted by pronounced vertical elements, is a typical Hellenistic-Roman layout found in Villa dei Misteri in southern Italy as well as in the Aldobrandini Wedding fresco from the 1st century BC. Moreover, this kind of paratactic design, also evident in Byzantine church decoration and shadow-puppet folklore, is reminiscent of Theofilos's compositions where all scenes seem to exist on one uniform level or plane. In both artists everything is clearly expressed and all visual phenomena are thrust forward to the narrative surface where they receive even illumination in a continuous present.3 Imbued with a stage designer's perception of space, the humble facade of the grocery store is further invested with an aura of classical order, conveying a sense of monumentality and timeless serenity. Its pronounced and rhythmical verticality, purity of form, and juxtaposition of light and dark areas, which was repeated by the artist in his famous pair of Neon coffeehouse paintings, creates a tranquil world of purity, austere beauty, and harmony of form that borders on abstraction. 1 See Y. Tsarouchis's brief assessment of his 1962-1966 period in Yannis Tsarouchis Retrospective 1928-1981 [in Greek], exhibition catalogue, Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art - Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki 1981.2 A. See also 'Yannis Tsarouchis', Greek Heritage quarterly, vol. 1, no. 2, Spring 1964, pp. 92-93. 3 In the early 1960s, Tsarouchis paid frequent and lengthy visits to the island of Mytilene, overseeing the construction of the Theofilos Museum in Petra—a testament to his lifelong admiration of the great folk-art painter.
