John Bickerdike 1895-1973 - Study Girl combing hair, Torso in oak, sculpture mounted on a squared oak base, Bradford Artists Exhibition 1951 label partially over artists label to base. Catalogue note: - John Bickerdike sculptor, wood-carver and puppet maker was born at Windhill near Bradford, Yorkshire. Apprentice at fourteen to a wood-carver, he attended the occasional evening class at Bradford School of Art. Worked as a wood carver and sculptor for local architects and for Watney's Brewery before taking on independent commissions with his artist wife Rhoda, he established Omnibus Puppets in 1932, with the business changing its name to Ebor Marionettes in 1934. Exhibited at the Inaugural Exhibition of the Work of Living British Artists 1927 and Sculpture in Britain Between the Wars Exhibition 1986. A puppet by Bickerdike is in the collections at the V & A, exhibit number S.417-2001
Pelham Puppets circa 1950s - SS Type Policeman and Boy (x 2), SM Type Old Lady and Farmer, plus two Pilot Puppet Girls - all in original boxes (except boy in wrong box) (7) CONDITION REPORT Extremely minimal paint loss, mainly Farmers wife and Farmers hands and tiny fleck loss of paint to one of farmers cheeks. No cracks to any. Farmer and wife mouths freely. All limbs and heads properly attached. Overall very good condition and the clothes in very good condition too
