UTAGAWA TOYOHARU: THE BATTLE OF JIUXIAN-SHAN IN CHINABy Utagawa Toyoharu (1735-1814), signed Utagawa Toyoharu kore o hakaruJapan, c. 1780Color woodblock print on paper. Horizontal oban. Signed Utagawa Toyoharu kore o hakaru; publisher Iwatoya Genpachi. Titled Kyusensan kassen no zu (The Battle Of Jiuxian-Shan In China) from the series Newly Published Perspective Pictures (Shinpan uki-e).This elaborate 'ukie' ('perspective print') on a Chinese war theme may at first seem far from 'Ukiyoe' taste. However, the scene is a realization of one of the 'Bunraku' puppet plays of Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653-1724), most of which remained very popular through the Edo period.SIZE of the sheet 24 x 36 cmCondition: Good condition and well-preserved colors with slightly trimmed margins. Some creasing, rubbing, staining, and browning of paper, commensurate with age.Provenance: From the collection of Adolphe Stoclet (1871-1949) and thence by descent in the Stoclet family, previously in the collection of Hayashi Tadamasa (1854-1906). One red seal of the Hayashi Collection at the right margin. Adolphe Stoclet (1871-1949) was a Belgian engineer, financier, and noted collector. He was born into a family of Belgian bankers and became a director of the Societe Generale de Belgique after his father's death. He married Suzanne Stevens (1874-1960), the daughter of the art critic, historian, collector, and dealer Arthur Stevens (1825-1909) and niece of the painter Alfred Stevens (1823-1906). The Stoclets were connected with avant-garde art circles in Paris and Vienna, where they met Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956), who designed the Stoclet's famous Palais in Brussels. Gustav Klimt (1862-1916) painted the murals in its dining room. The Palais Stoclet, today a UNESCO World Heritage site, was the lavish setting to one of the most important eclectic art collections of all times, which included Egyptian and Chinese sculpture, medieval Italian painting and metalwork, enamels and relics, as well as Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art.Utagawa Toyoharu (1735-1814) was the founder of the art school of Utagawa in Japan. He was born in the province of Tajima (Northern Hyogo prefecture). However, he studied in the cultural city of Kyoto relating to the art school of Kano. His early mentor was Tsuruzawa Tangei. In the 1760s, Toyoharu moved to Edo (modern-day Tokyo). Thus, new ideas entered his artistic world when he studied under Toriyama Sekien (1712-1788). Toyoharu designed many perspective prints during the later 1760s and 1770s, laying the foundations for the development of landscape prints. From the 1780s onwards he concentrated on paintings of the fashions and customs of beautiful women. He was the founder of the Utagawa School.Museum comparison:An identical print, with right hand margin trimmed so lacking title, signature, and publisher details, is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession number 11.14708. A related diptych made using slightly different blocks (compare, e.g., the shapes of the clouds and the position of the beacon tower), is in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1963,0731,0.6.
UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI: LADY OF THE EVENING FACES: YAZAMA'S WIFE ORIEBy Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861), signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga with seal Yoshi KiriJapan, 1845–1846Color woodblock print on paper. Vertical oban. Signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga with the artist's Yoshi Kiri seal, censor's seal: Watari; publisher Iseya Ichibei with seal. Titled Yugao: Yazama-shi no shitsu Orie (Lady of the Evening Faces: Yazama's Wife Orie), number 4 in the series Genji-gumo ukiyo e-awase (Ukiyo-e Parallels for the Cloudy Chapters of the Tale of Genji).Orie, the wife of Yazama, walking in the snow with a large dog, carrying a rolled-cup straw mat. Poem inscribed to the colophon.Inscriptions: Inscribed with a poem, 'Yorite koso/ sore ka to mo mime/ tasogare ni/ honobono mitsuru/ hana no yugao'.SIZE of the sheet 36 x 24.1 cmCondition: Great impression and excellent colors, with trimmed margins. Very minor foxing, one tiny hole, mounted on Japan paper. Each of the fifty-four chapters of The Tale of Genji is named and is associated with a crest called a 'Genji-mon'. In this series, each of the first fifty-four prints portray various scenes from history, legend, and literature that are suggested by a specific chapter of the novel and the appropriate Genji-mon is shown in the upper left cartouche with a poem. This series consists of one design for each of the fifty-four chapters and six supplementary designs. This print from a set of sixty intriguingly combines references from The Tale of Genji's Chapter 4, “The Lady of the Evening Faces,” with a seemingly unrelated scene from Kabuki theater—a culmination of Edo-period experimentation with parodic imagery. What does a streetwalker with a dog on a snowy night have to do with Genji? The woman is Orie, estranged wife of one of the “Forty-Seven Ronin” featured in numerous Kabuki and puppet plays. Here she is conflated with the tragic heroine Yugao, invoked by the yugao (moonflower) blossom and Genji poem on the scroll above. Like Yugao, who was killed by an angry spirit, Orie will meet a violent demise before the night is through.Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. The range of Kuniyoshi's subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. Kuniyoshi's work is held in the permanent collections of many museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Princeton University Art Museum, the Nasher Museum of Art, the Walters Art Museum, the Portland Art Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Van Gogh Museum.Museum comparison: An identical print is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession number 11.28819. Another identical print is in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 2008,3037.17404.
A LACQUERED WOOD SHAMISENJapan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)The lacquered wood ground of the body, neck, and headstock all finely decorated in gold and iro-e takamaki-e and hiramaki-e with leafy flowering chrysanthemums, many of the blossoms with inlays of bone to the center. The base of the body mounted with a copper foot fitted with a gilt-copper bird carrying a cross in its beak. LENGTH 65.4 cmCondition: Good condition with some wear, light scratches, minuscule nicks, minor flaking to lacquer, the catskin covering the front with a repaired tear. Provenance: From an old French private collection. The shamisen (lit. 'three strings'), known as samisen in Kyoto and Osaka, is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. It is played with a plectrum called a bachi. The construction of the shamisen varies in shape, depending on the genre in which it is used. The instrument used to accompany kabuki has a thin neck, facilitating the agile and virtuosic requirements of that genre. The one used to accompany puppet plays and folk songs has a longer and thicker neck instead, to match the more robust music of those genres.Museum comparison:Compare a closely related wood shamisen decorated with similarly lacquered chrysanthemums, made by Takechi Matsukawa for the Wakamura workshop, dated 1891, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 69.271.2.
