MONACO: A good, small collection of A.Ls.S. by various members of the Royal family of Monaco comprising Princess Charlotte, Duchess of Valentinois (1898-1977, Hereditary Princess of Monaco 1922-44, mother of Prince Rainier III) A.L.S., Charlotte, two pages, 4to, Lausanne, 20th June 1924, to Mabel Meira, stating that she is pleased her correspondent arrived home safely and continuing `Nurse arrived here with all her parcels...none were lost! But she had to ask someone who was coming from Paris to bring Rainier`s cycle, it was found to be useful here & Tiny [Princess Antionette] has been offered a wooden biogale (?) so I dread a little the journey back to France! Rainier is simply terrible now, he doesn`t stay two seconds quiet, he has to be put on the floor the whole time...` Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Princess; Prince Louis II (1870-1949, Sovereign Prince of Monaco 1922-49) A.L.S., Louis, four pages, 8vo, Brodick Castle, Isle of Arran, Scotland, n.d., to Mabel (Meira). The Prince states that he has been expecting a letter from his correspondent in answer to Nurse Vauxhall`s note and hopes that nothing wrong has happened to her and asking her to write to him in Ireland. Louis continues `I retain your testimonial book until you let me have a suitable adress (sic)...the children have greatly enjoyed our quiet stay in this lovely island`; Princess Antoinette, Baroness of Massy (1920- , Elder sister of Prince Rainier III) A.L.S., Tiny, two pages, 8vo, Palais de Monaco, 1st June 1949, to Mabel Meira, on black edged mourning stationery. The Princess thanks her correspondent for her kind letter of sympathy [on the death of her Grandfather, Prince Louis II of Monaco] and comments `We have been through an awful time watching poor Grandpapa die. He had been dying for several weeks, with a lot of pain, but his wonderful constitution and the incredible amount of drugs administered kept making him better for a day or two at a time....They gave him a terrific funeral and the whole population-Monegasque and foreign-was really awfully upset; it was the end of an epoch, of a chapter of our history. Poor Rainier is very pale and tired after the strain of these last weeks and has taken on his new duties with great courage.` With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Princess. With a second A.L.S., Tytye, three pages, 8vo, n.p. (Monaco), 26th April 1950, to Mabel Meira. The Princess states that her brother, Prince Rainier, is very grateful for her kind wishes and continues `We had a very full and happy "coronation week" which I am glad you were able to hear such a lot about on the wireless. Rainier is tremendously popular and everyone put on the finest show they could for him; it was all a great success and made us very happy.` Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Princess. Also included are a small selection of vintage signed photographs (postcard size and larger) including Princess Charlotte, 1927, a vintage 8 x 10.5 photograph of the young Prince Rainier and his sister Princess Antoinette, standing and seated together on the occasion of their confirmation, signed and inscribed in a young hand to the lower photographer`s mount, `For dear Mabel, In remembrance of our confirmation, with much love, Tyty and Rainier` etc., together with a few pieces of unsigned printed ephemera relating to the confirmation. Maria Barthelemon (1749-1799), née Young, also known as Polly Young, was an English soprano, composer and keyboardist, who came to prominance at an early age when she performed to audiences in Dublin in the company of Thomas Arne and his wife Cecilia (Maria’s aunt, and herself one of the greatest English sopranos of the 18th century). She made her Covent Garden debut in September 1762, and two seasons later joined the Italian Opera Company at the King’s Theatre where she met and married the violinist and composer Francois Hippolyte Barthelemon. They toured the continent in 1776-77, when Maria sang in her husband’s oratorio Jefte in Florence, and gave concerts for the Queen of Naples and Marie Antoinette. In the later 1780’s, the Barthelemons attended the chapel at the Asylum for Female Orphans, near their home in Vauxhall, where they were influenced by the Swedenborgian minister Duché, and for which Maria composed the present work.
