1939 Bedford Light Van Registration no. JMT 796 Chassis no. HC3843 Engine no. H28106General Motors imported Chevrolet commercial vehicles into the UK during the 1920s before setting up domestic manufacture at Vauxhall's Luton plant under the 'Bedford' brand name in 1931. Chevrolet cabs were used initially but otherwise the first Bedfords were entirely new and successful to such an extent that the company coined the advertising slogan 'You See Them Everywhere'. Bedford's light commercial vans were, as one might expect, based on Vauxhall chassis and this example appears to be based on the Ten-Four saloon. The Bedford HC, a compact commercial vehicle, was manufactured by Bedford starting in 1938. It utilized the same mechanical components as the H-series Vauxhall 10-4 sedan. During World War II, civilian vehicle production ceased, but the HC van briefly resumed production after the war ended.Subsequently, the Bedford JC, a more robust model, took its place, only to be succeeded by the taller-roofed Bedford PC after the war. Purchased by John in 1973, invoices on file suggest the vehicle was last restored c.2012, Malcolm Collinson of Farnham entrusted with much of the work. Last taxed in January 2015 and presently SORN'd, the vehicle is offered with an old-style continuation logbook, V5C document, 1959 tax disc and a history file. The engine turns over with the assistance of a jump-start pack; however, no attempts have been made to start the vehicle. There is no radiator cap present and it should be noted the V5C incorrectly lists the chassis number as 'HC3343'. Sold strictly as viewed the vehicle will require recommissioning or restoration to a greater or lesser extent.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

***NO RESERVE*Registration - 39 PHYChassis No - PADX197315M.O.T. - ExemptOdometer - 96,727 ‘39 PHY’ has had just six keepers in its 61-year life, the last two of whom have invested a fair degree of time and money in what is now a decidedly rare model that had already benefited from such period modifications as power steering, four-speed gearbox with floor-mounted change and overdrive. The recent work has included: a respray from white to two-tone blue; conversion to allow the use of E10 fuel; the re-coring of the radiator; replacement of the head gasket, water pump, headlights, door locks, spark plugs and leads, and three quarterlights; the installation of bespoke window rubbers, front inertia seatbelts, pair of Revotec electric cooling fans, reversing light, contemporary indicators and aftermarket gauges. More fundamental has been the upgrade to the braking system that now features servo-assistance and discs up front. The vendor currently considers all major aspects of the Vauxhall to be in ‘good’ order and is offering the car complete with a modest history file. When did you last see one of these? The PA Cresta was produced at a time when the design of the UK-built Vauxhalls was heavily influenced by its parent company, General Motors, and the tail fins, wrap around windows and white-wall tyres were all echoes of the Buick Special already on sale in the US. Launched in October 1957, the model reigned for five years before being replaced by the completely restyled PB, during which period 81,841 examples were manufactured. The model was initially powered by the 2262cc six-cylinder engine of the preceding E Series Cresta, but this was heavily revised in 1960, and cars from August that year onwards benefited from a more powerful version of 2651cc. A Motor magazine road test of one of the later cars produced a 0-60mph time of 15.2 seconds and top speed of a whisker under 95mph. The powerplants drove through either a column-change three-speed manual or Hydramatic automatic transmission. In summary:Just six-keepers and an indicated 96,727 miles over 61 yearsPeriod mods include four-speed manual gearbox and power steeringThe subject of recent maintenance and improvements

Nichol (Andrew) Five Views of the Dublin and Kingstown Railway, first edition, 5 superb hand-coloured aquatints by J.Harris after Nichol, 8pp. publisher's catalogue tipped inside rear wrapper, sewn in original printed wrappers, a little spotted and soiled, slight fraying to spine, preserved in modern half dark maroon morocco portfolio, spine slightly faded, [Bobins 1568; Not in Abbey], 4to, Dublin, William Frederick Wakeman, [plates dated and water-marked 1834].⁂ A superb copy of this great rarity, with only a handful of copies recorded at auction. The first railway in Ireland had difficulties to overcome. One opponent, Mr. O'Hanlon, told a Railway Committee of the House of Commons in 1833 that it "would be a monstrous thing that the solid advantages of commerce, manufactures, and all the blessings resulting therefrom, should he sacrificed to a few nursery maids descending from the town of Kingstown to the sea at Dunleary, to perform the pleasures of ablution." Storms also caused a delay as a vital bridge was destroyed. It was finally opened in December 1834 with two engines, the Vauxhall and the Hibernia, which were able to reach speeds of over thirty miles an hour.
