Hook (James). Collection of Favorite Songs Sung by Mr. Dignum, Mr. Denman, Mrs. Franklin, The Two Miss Howells, & Mrs. Mountain, at Vauxhall Gardens, 2 parts in one, printed & sold at A. Bland & Weller's, 1798, engraved throughout with title-page to each part and musical notation, titles each with large vignette view of Vauxhall Gardens, some toning, final leaf in first part with 6" closed tear and a short closed tear at gutter, both with paper repair on verso, pp.11/12 in second part with small piece missing from blank fore-margin, second part with early manuscript numerals to upper outer blank corners, bound with a number of blank leaves at front and rear, front pastedown with bookplate of A.M. Broadley, The Knapp, Bradpole, 1911, free endpapers toned, rough-trimmed, twentieth century red cloth, with portion of earlier gilt lettered leather spine relaid, some minor fading and small stains, slim folioAlexander Meyrick Broadley (1847-1916) was an English barrister, historian and author. He was also an avid bibliophile. He built a picturesque towered mansion - The Knapp - in his home village of Bradpole in Dorset. There he lived for the last 20 years of his life, devoting his time largely to writing and book collecting. His library included a large collection of works on criminal jurisprudence, significant acquisitions of manuscript material, and a large number of works he had grangerised. James Hook (1746-1827) was the musical director at Vauxhall Gardens from the early 1770s until 1821, composing over two thousand songs specifically for Vauxhall and performing an organ concerto every evening at closing time. This particular collection of songs is uncommon.(Qty: 1)
