An extremely rare Girl-on-a-Horse or Compass Marked group of a young man, c. 1755, the figure seated on a tree stump with a dog to his left, wearing a flower painted jacket and breeches, the rococo scrollwork base picked out in puce, painter's mark '12' in iron red to base, h. 15.5cm, slight restorationProvenance: The Dennis G. Rice Collection of fine early Derby Porcelain (1750-1770)As well as being an avid collector of early Derby porcelain, Dr. Dennis G. Rice was an academic and wrote one of the key reference works on the subject - 'Derby Porcelain, The Golden Years 1750-1770' published in 1983. A number of the pieces illustrated in the book will be offered for sale.Literature: cf. D.G. Rice, Derby Porcelain, colour plate B. In his book Rice writes 'There exists a small group of figures attributable on stylistic and other grounds to a date around 1755. Their distinctive characteristics are that they are are light in weight, have a paste that is dirty and speckled, and a rough unglazed dirty surface under a base which is scrolled and rococo in form. Some of the models have a mark consisting of a circle containing a triangle but the more observant as a letter Y. All the examples so far recorded are modelled with a remarkable flair in a style not seen elsewhere in English porcelain. ...none of the models is to be found either as a a dry-edge or Duesbury figure. This complete isolation from what went before and what came after is indeed remarkable if a Derby attribution is correct. An alternative theory is that the 'Girl-on-a-horse' factory figures originated at Crisp's porcelain factory in Vauxhall. The Vauxhall factory was run by Nicholas Crisp (about 1704-1774). He was a member of the Society of Arts, which was established in 1754 to encourage British industries faced with foreign competition. Crisp was representative of the commercially-minded entrepreneurs who founded the English porcelain industry.

1954 Bedford TA lorry. Registration number not registered (see text). Chassis number A5LC 36203. Engine number A5 32630. Bedford was a subsidiary company of Vauxhall Motors which was the provider of commercial vehicles for the UK and export markets. The origins of Vauxhall Motors can be traced to 1857 when Alexander Wilson founded the Vauxhall Iron Works in Wandsworth Road, Vauxhall, London. Vauxhall Motors moved to Luton in 1905 and in November 1925 Vauxhall was acquired by General Motors. During World War II production of civilian vehicles was suspended, and Vauxhall was given the task of building the Churchill tanks. Production resumed after the war using the tried and trusted K, M and O types introduced in 1939, and these gave way in 1951 to the new S type and later its 4x4 relative, the R type. This was chosen by the Armed Forces and was to be the standard 4 tonne truck for many years. Normal trucks were not neglected with the A type appearing in 1953 and followed by the D in 1957. All lorries were classed as T for truck then the model type with the number 2, 3, 4 and 5 as the weight they could carry, 5 for 5 tons. This example was exported to New Zealand for use as a Fire Tender with the registration number DV 6773; they were used mainly in the Forrest Conservation Catchments due to the lack of water in remote areas. This one appears to have been retired circa 1994 when it was owned by Canterbury Truck Ltd who sold it to Thomas Gaskin of Christchurch, N.Z. in 1995 and then it made its way back to the UK. Our vendor acquired it some 20 years ago with the intention of putting a tipper bed on it and found a ram and rear lights for this. The body was stripped and red leaded and then time got in the way. It has sat in his barn ever since and he now has no interest in it. Sold with a New Zealand Certification of Registration and a 1990 Loading Certificate. There are no import papers with it and the new owner will have to deal with DVLA with regard to registration.

A London-decorated figured of a nun c.1755-60, after Chelsea or Bow in imitation of Meissen, seated and reading from a bible or prayer book, wearing a puce mantle over a flowered robe, 12.8cm. Provenance: the Roy Hogarth Collection. The Stephen Hanscombe Collection. Exhibited: Stockspring Antiques, June 2008, Early James Giles, No. 80. The steatic soft-paste porcelain of this model has been previously attributed to Vauxhall and may possibly be linked to a short-lived concern at Kentish Town under the direction of John Bolton.
