A RARE PAIR OF CARVED & PAINTED STORY-TELLING PADDLES BY VALE OF CLWYD TOYS circa 1915, depicting a lady in Welsh hat and shawl with umbrella in the wind and depicting the 'Ladies of Llangollen', both carved within flat plywood roundels and with separate handles, stamped verso 'Vale of Clwyd Toys', 23.5cms diam Provenance: Carmarthen area, has been in the possession of the same Welsh family for several decades, please see https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4243087/4243089 (National Library of Wales) Auctioneer's Note: made by the Vale of Clwyd Toy Factory in Trefnant which began as a cottage industry in 1909 by Mary Heaton, providing employment and interest to working men in the evening. She was then able to recruit by means of a County Technical Committee grant, the help of Edward Jones, the local wood carver of Trefnant, joining the project as a teacher. They then began to sell toys and the profits were shared amongst the workers. From then Mary Heaton developed the project further, extending the classes and opportunity to unemployed men who had been incapacitated from ill-health and from other causes including wounded World War 1 soldiers. The toys were sold in several outlets around Wales and in England, they were also exported to Patagonia and other regions of the world including through agents in Buenos Ayres. Condition Report: in remarkably good condition, a small split in one but both stable and solid, no other cracks chips or significant staining and with very fresh paint work, lovely rare examples of ethical Welsh toys with an interesting social history relating to Denbighshire

ORAZIO DE FERRARI (Genova Voltri, 1606 - Genoa, 1657)Saint martyrOil on canvas, cm. 109x95. FramedThe painting, unpublished, is accompanied by an expertise by Prof. Anna Orlando who has recognized that it is certainly an autograph work by Orazio De Ferrari. The expertise underlines the brilliant anatomy and the adherence to the luminism of Caravaggio. The work constitutes a significant example of the naturalistic tendencies widespread in Genoese painting between the third and fifth decade of the seventeenth century, of which De Ferrari is perhaps the most important exponent. Among the many possible terms of comparison we can mention here the Ecce Homo at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan and even more the San Sebastiano of a Senese private collection (see P. Donati, Orazio De Ferrari, Genoa 1997, cat. 12, p. 128) which, due to identity of format and specularity in the pose of the two figures of holy martyrs, was probably the pendant of our painting. In accordance with the opinion of Prof. Orlando, this canvas should be considered a significant youth proof by Orazio De Ferrari, datable to the beginning of the 30s of the 17th century.

With 24, mostly full-page emblematic woodcut illustrations, numerous illustrated woodcut initials and , as well as printer's woodcut device on title page.- First edition of this major work of Bohemian noble Wenzel Budowetz von Budow (1547-1621), who here presented a mystical outline of the Old and New Testaments, grouping pre-Christian events into lunar and solar cycles. - Due to his involvement as leader of the protestant nobles against catholic emperor Rudolf II., Budowetz, a Calvinist who had studied in Wittenberg, was finally beheaded in Prague in 1621. - Enclosed a copper engraving with a portrait of Budowetz from 1774 by Johann Balzer, tipped-on cardboard. - 19th century quarter vellum over cardboards, with gilt spine title on black, covered with blind-stamped paper in red, multicolour marbled end papers. - Printed date on title page with hand-written correction to "1618", title page with some pencil remarks. Im Jahr 1632 "plädierte Puteanus für die Annahme eines Nullmeridians, der durch Rom verläuft und den er zu Ehren des regierenden Papstes Urban VIII. als "Circulus Urbanianus" vorschlug. Den Meridian gegenüber dem römischen Meridian nannte er die "Linea Archemerina" und markierte die Linie, auf der sich das Kalenderdatum änderte. Puteanus wies darauf hin, dass eine Datumslinie, um nützlich zu sein, nur über Wasser verlaufen dürfe, ohne irgendein Land zu durchqueren, und er räumte ein, dass seine Datumslinie einen Ausflug nach Osten auf dem Breitengrad "Neues Albion" machen müsse, um diese Bedingung zu erfüllen. Puteanus pointed out that in order to be useful, a date line could only pass over water, without crossing any country, and he conceded that his date line would have to make a trip to the east on the latitude "New Albion" to meet this condition. This is one of the first prints by Ulrich Morhart in Tübingen. He had been printing in Strasbourg since 1519 and had moved to Tübingen in 1523, where he registered on 20 May. The ornamental Evangelist title border of 1522 is described in Steiff (Erster Buchdruck in Tübingen, p. 30). II: First edition of this psalm commentary by the theologian Andreas Hyperius (d.i. Andreas Gerhard, Ypres 1511-1564 Marburg), who was appointed to the University of Marburg in 1541, where he taught at the Department of Theology until 1564. He is the author of the great Hessian church order. III: First edition of the commentary to the 128th psalm by Justus Menius (Fulda 1499-1558 Leipzig). It is an important source for the chapter "Des cannibales" in the Essais de Montaigne. The portfolio is based on pen-and-ink drawings that were transferred for printing by photolithography. Schiller's "Räuber", which Grosz transferred to his time and updated in drawings, served as a model. With sharp polemics he gathers together the types of society and draws attention to the social ills: the military priest, who blesses the disaster of war that has already taken place; the well-fed factory owners, who play for money they lack in the presence of the unemployed, or the hollow-faced creature, who asks for a gift from the richly laid table of the rich man. The colophon page and plate 3 are missing - Some leaves with minimal brown spots. Very rare.

Es handelt sich dabei eigentlich um "die Arbeit des Missionars Basile de Glemona, welche Guignes auf Befehl ungeändert herausgegeben und aus der alphabetischen Ordnung in eine Ordnung nach den Zeichen bringen musste. Er durfte bloß einige Zusätze beifügen" (Ebert). Guignes war 1794-95 als Übersetzer für den niederländischen Botschafter am Hof des Kaisers Qianlong tätig. Sein Werk ist eine gründliche Bearbeitung der Zusammenstellung, die der Franziskaner-Missionar Basilio de Gemona Brollo im 17. Jahrhundert erarbeite. Die zehntausenden chinesischen Schriftzeichen sind aus Birnbaumholzblöcken gedruckt, die zwischen 1715 und 1740 für ein Projekt des jungen chinesischen Abenteurers Arcadio Huan geschnitzt wurden. Der Franziskaner Basile de Gemona (1648-1704) verfasste in den Jahren 1694 und 1699 seine mehr als tausend Seiten umfassende Ausgabe, in der er zwischen 7000 und 9000 Ideogramme beschreibt und übersetzt. Er schuf damit das grundlegende Werk überhaupt. Mehrere Versuche einer Veröffentlichung scheiterten auf Grund der hohen Herstellungskosten. Erst zu Beginn des 19. It is actually "the work of the missionary Basile de Glemona, which Guignes had to edit unaltered by order and move from alphabetical order to an order by characters. Der spanische Offizier Domingo Badía y Leblich (1767-1818) reiste unter dem Namen Ali-Bey durch Nordafrika mit der Absicht, die Beduinen Stämme zum Aufstand gegen den Sultan und zur Eroberung Marokkos anzustacheln. Er ist bekannt als der dritte Europäer, der nach Ludovico di Varthema und Joseph Pitts Zugang zu Mekka erhielt, und als der erste, der als Augenzeuge von den Wahhabiten in Mekka berichtete. Seine Reise nach Arabien, die 1803 begann, wurde vom Premierminister Karls IV., Manuel Godoy, als Agent des spanischen Kolonialismus in Auftrag gegeben. Um unbemerkt zu bleiben, ließ er sich beschneiden, gab sich als abbasidischer Prinz aus und verhielt sich wie ein muslimischer Gläubiger, der behauptete, in Europa studiert zu haben, um seinen Mangel an arabischen Sprachkenntnissen zu rechtfertigen. Er verbrachte zwei Jahre in Marokko, reiste dann nach Tripolis, Zypern und Ägypten, besuchte Mekka und machte auf dem Rückweg in Jerusalem, prominenten Orten in Syrien und schließlich in Konstantinopel Station. Nach mehr als zwei Jahren scheiterte seine Mission, und er musste Marokko verlassen. Anstatt nach Europa zurückzukehren, setzte er seine Reise nach Ägypten fort, wo er Chateaubriand traf, dann nach Zypern reiste, bevor er 1807 nach Mekka pilgerte und über Jerusalem, Damaskus und Konstantinopel nach Spanien zurückkehrte. Er war einer der ersten Christen, der eine detaillierte und illustrierte Beschreibung von Mekka und der Omar-Moschee in Jerusalem sowie weiterer Aspekte des Islam anfertigte. Neben seinen nützlichen naturwissenschaftlichen Beobachtungen leistete auf dem Gebiete der Kartographie hervorragendes und zeichnete ständig Landschaften, Stadtpläne, Gebäude und Ruinen, "die z.T. die ersten waren, die zur Kenntnis des Abendlandes gelangten" (Henze). Der Atlas zeigt prachtvolle Ansichten von Zypern, Marokko, Nordafrika, Côte d'Arabie, El Cassaba oder Schloss Tanger. Ferner Grund- und Aufrisse von Moscheen und Gebäuden, Epigraphik, Oasen, Schlösser und Gebäuden, sowie Fauna und Tiere. - Beim Textband 1 fehlt das Frontispiz, die Karten des vollständigen Atlasbandes meist sauber, nur zum Ende hin teils im Außenrand und verso etwas braunfleckig. - Mit dem meist inkompletten Atlasband sehr selten. Atlas volume and 2 (v.3) text vols. - The Spanish officer Domingo Badía y Leblich (1767-1818) travelled through North Africa under the name Ali-Bey with the intention of inciting the Bedouin tribes to revolt against the Sultan and to conquer Morocco. He is known as the third European to gain access to Mecca, after Ludovico di Varthema and Joseph Pitts, and as the first eyewitness to the Wahhabis in Mecca. His journey to Arabia, which began in 1803, was commissioned by the Prime Minister of Charles IV, Manuel Godoy, as an agent of Spanish colonialism. To go unnoticed, he had himself circumcised, pretended to be an Abbasid prince and behaved like a Muslim believer who claimed to have studied in Europe to justify his lack of knowledge of Arabic. He spent two years in Morocco, then travelled to Tripoli, Cyprus and Egypt, visited Mecca and on his way back he stopped in Jerusalem, prominent places in Syria and finally in Constantinople. After more than two years his mission failed and he had to leave Morocco. Instead of returning to Europe, he continued his journey to Egypt, where he met Chateaubriand, then travelled to Cyprus, before making a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1807, returning to Spain via Jerusalem, Damascus and Constantinople. He was one of the first Christians to produce a detailed and illustrated description of Mecca, the Omar Mosque in Jerusalem and other aspects of Islam. The atlas shows magnificent views of Cyprus, Morocco, North Africa, Côte d'Arabie, El Cassaba or Tangier Castle. It also shows ground plans and elevations of mosques and buildings, epigraphs, oases, castles and buildings, as well as fauna and animals. - Text volume 1 lacks the frontispiece, the maps of the complete atlas volume mostly clean, only towards the end partly in the outer margin and at the back side somewhat brown-spotted. - Very rare with the mostly incomplete atlas volume.

Kircher vertrat auch die Theorie, dass die Harmonie der Musik die göttlichen Proportionen des Universums widerspiegelt. Ein großer Teil der Musurgia ist der Beschreibung zeitgenössischer und historischer Musikinstrumente aus verschiedenen Ländern der Welt gewidmet. Athanasius Kircher was a German Jesuit scholar and published over 40 works during is life in widely varying fields such as medicine, optics, geology, natural philosophy and music. Musurgia Universalis is a combination of a scholarly study of the history of music and musical instruments and an attempt at a scientific explanation of musical harmony and sound theory. Kircher also theorized that the harmony of music reflects the divine proportions of the Universe. Much of Musurgia is given over to the description of contemporary and historic musical instruments from various parts of the world. Originally from Lombardy, Petrus Lombardus was renowned as a "Magister sententiarum" because he formulated numerous sentences about thelogy, which he put down in writing to strengthen the faith. Die erste dieser Abhandlungen beschäftigte sich in erster Linie mit Befestigungen, ihrer Errichtung und ihrem Abbau (der Begriff "génie" bezog sich damals hauptsächlich auf Militär- und Marinebetriebe). Die zweite, Architecture hydraulique, umfasste zivile Bauten. Die Wahl des Titels spiegelte die tatsächliche Bedeutung der Probleme in den Bereichen Transport, Schiffbau, Wasserwege, Wasserversorgung und Zierbrunnen wider. Beide Bücher begannen mit Formulierungen der Prinzipien der Mechanik in mathematischer Hinsicht, in denen es nichts Originelles gab. Die Diskussion war elementar, denn die vermeintliche Vermählung von Mathematik und Mechanik war ein Ritus, der im frühen achtzehnten Jahrhundert öfter gefeiert als vollzogen wurde. Dennoch erwiesen sich die praktischen Inhalte beider Werke als unschätzbar wertvoll für Architekten, Bauherren und Ingenieure. Sie laufen auf verhältnismäßige Ingenieurhandbücher hinaus, in denen der für eine Konstruktion Verantwortliche die Modellspezifikationen für ein Fundament oder ein Gesims, einen Giebel oder einen Bogen nachschlagen, Diagramme finden, denen er folgen oder die er anpassen konnte, und Arbeitsanalysen und Arbeitspläne zur Arbeitsteilung und -leitung konsultieren konnte. Beide Werke wurden so oft nachgedruckt, dass die Kupferplatten abgenutzt waren und für die endgültigen Ausgaben 1813 bzw. 1819 neu gestochen werden mussten. Diese Ausgaben wurden mit Anmerkungen von Navier neu herausgegeben, der es zur Erhaltung des praktischen Wertes für klüger hielt, Bélidors theoretische Fehler durch aktuelle Anmerkungen zu korrigieren, als sie zu überarbeiten oder neu zu schreiben. Er wählte diesen Kurs trotz der immensen Entwicklung, die seit der ersten Ausgabe von Bélidor stattgefunden hatte und fast der Schaffung der analytischen Mechanik als Wissenschaft gleichkam. The choice of title was a reflection of the actual prominence of pro- blems involving transport, shipbuilding, waterways, water supply, and ornamental fountains. Both books opened with formulations of the principles of mechanics in mathematical terms, in which there was nothing original. The discussion was elementary, for the putative marriage of mathematics to mechanics was a rite more often celebrated than consummated in the early eighteenth century. Nevertheless, the practical contents of both works proved to be invaluable to architects, builders, and engineers. They amount to ratio- nalized engineering handbooks in which the man in charge of a construction might look up model specifications for a foundation or a cornice, a pediment or an arch; find diagrams he could follow or adapt; and consult job analyses and work plans for dividing and direc- ting the labor. Both works were reprinted so often that the copper plates wore out and had to be re-engraved for the final editions, in 1813 and 1819 respectively. Those editions were republished with notes by Navier, who in order to conserve the practical value, found it wiser to correct Bélidor's theoretical faults by up-to-date annotation than to revise or rewrite. Die Abhandlung ist in zwei Teile aufgebaut, die die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Vermutung beweisen soll, dass es in seinem kopernikanischen Weltbild neben der Erde noch andere bewohnte Planeten im Weltraum gibt. Das erste Buch entwickelt, ausgehend von einer überblickshaften Doxographie (u.a. The treatise is in two parts, which is intended to prove the probability of the assumption that in his Copernican world view, there are other inhabited planets in space besides the Earth. The first book, based on a survey of doxography (Brahe, Bruno Cusanus and Kepler, among others), develops the argument that the other planets of the solar system are probably Earth-like and are home to plants, animals and rational beings who are thought to be endowed with the same kind of reason and similar senses as humans. Ernst Carl Friedrich war der Sohn des Miniaturisten Kilian Lang. 1755 zog er nach Nürnberg und lernte bei der berühmten Barbara Regina Dietzsch aus der gleichnnamigen Künstlerdynastie, die auf Darstellung von Blumen, Insekten und Vögeln spezialisiert war. Ihr Einfluss zeigt sich in der feinen Pinselführung und in der meisterhaft detailgetreuen Darstellung, wie sie vor allem aus französischen und niederländischen Stillleben bekannt ist. Werke Langs befinden sich u.a. in den Sammlungen des Germanisches Nationalmuseums, Nürnberg und des Fitzwilliam Museums, Cambridge. - Das vorliegende Blatt besticht durch minutiöse Feinarbeit die sich vor allem in der Darstellung der Distel zeigt, in der bei genauer Betrachtung selbst noch kleinste Spinnweben zu erkennen sind. - Etwas berieben u. tlw. mit kleinen Löchlein. Engels entworfene Ziel der Enteignung und der Abschaffung des Privatkapitals, sondern trat für die Schaffung einer neuen sozialen Ordnung durch einen solidarisch orientierten Kapitalismus ein. Diese Idee scheint heute, nach dem Scheitern von Kommunismus und 'Turbokapitalismus', aktueller denn je. - Diesel als Sozialutopist - eine kaum bekannte Seite des berühmten Erfinders. - Henri Marie La Fontaine (1854-1943), belgischer Jurist, Politiker und Pazifist war Gründer der belgischen Gesellschaft für Schlichtung und Frieden und wurde 1913 mit dem Friedensnobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Das nuancenreiche Kolorit der Kupfer zeigt die Flügel jeweils von der Außen- sowie der Innenseite, diese teils mit metallisch-glänzenden Höhungen versehen und in variationsreicher Oberflächengestaltung. Einge Tafeln sind zusätzlich mit Raupen- und Pflanzendarstellungen illustriert, um so die Metamorphose und das Habitat der Schmetterlinge anzudeuten. Still, even Pfeiffer admits that this method offered new possibilities of comparative evaluation to the scholar, and Esper cannot be denied a strong artistic gift, which was greatly helped by the Nuremberg engraver Johann Carl Bock (fl. 1757-1806). During a stay in the Low Countries Bock was encouraged even more by artists of the school of Maria Sibylla Merian, who had formerly worked in Nuremberg" (Nissen, Bestiaries pp. 71-72). Its fine plates are exceptionally delicately hand-colored and engraved by Bock, Sturm, Tyroff, Volkart, Walbert, a.o. after Esper's own drawings. Eugen Johann Christoph Esper (1742-1810) was a German entomologist and phycologist, professor at Erlangen and director of the Natural History Museum. His other major works are 'Icones Fucorum' published from 1797-1808 and 'Die Pflanzthiere' published from 1788-1830. He obtained his doctorate of philosophy with help of Casimir Christoph Schmidel at the university of Erlangen in 1781 with a thesis entitled De varietatibus specierum in naturale productis. The following year, he started to teach at the university initially as extraordinary professor, a poorly paid position, then in 1797 as the professor of philosophy. He directed the department of natural history in Erlangen from 1805. Thanks to him the university collections of minerals, birds, shells and insects grew very rapidly. During his leisure hours Esper devoted himself to the study of nature and the preparation of manuscripts relating to natural history. He was the author of a series of booklets entitled Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen which were published between 1776 and 1807. These were richly illustrated, minerals, birds, plants, shells and insects being presented on hand-coloured plates. Esper's collection is today in the Zoologische Staatssammlung München . Title page minimally brown spotted, some leaves with waterstain at lower margin, two leaves with crease marks. Nice and complete copy, splendid colouring.

Colas, 2554. - Monglond, VI, 1146. - Erste Ausgabe, illustriert mit 12 gestochenen und sehr fein kolorierten Tafeln, nach Zeichnungen, die Gottfried Geissler vor Ort angefertigt hat. Sie werden von einem erläuternden Text in deutscher Sprache von Johann Gottfried Richter und der französischen Übersetzung auf der Rückseite von P. Hacault begleitet. Der Maler und Zeichner Johann Geissler ging 1790 nach Russland, um dort Zeichenunterricht zu erteilen. In den Jahren 1793 und 1794 begleitete er den Naturforscher Peter Simon Pallas auf seiner zweiten wissenschaftlichen Expedition nach Südrussland und verbrachte dann einige Jahre mit dem Naturforscher auf der Krim. Nach seiner Rückkehr in seine Heimatstadt Leipzig veröffentlichte er mehrere Bücher über Russland, die mit Zeichnungen illustriert waren, die er dort angefertigt hatte. Der Text wurde von Johann Gottfried Richter verfasst, ebenfalls gebürtiger Leipziger, der 16 Jahre lang als Tutor in Moskau tätig war. In seinen Kommentaren zeigt er eine große Kenntnis der Sitten und Gebräuche sowie eine große Zärtlichkeit gegenüber dem russischen Volk. Ein gutes Exemplar dieses ungewöhnlichen und seltenen Buches. Russia. - Modern red kidskin binding with marbled paper. - First edition, illustrated with 12 engraved and very finely coloured plates, based on drawings made on site by Gottfried Geissler. They are accompanied by an explanatory text in German by Johann Gottfried Richter and the French translation on the back by P. Hacault. The painter and draughtsman Johann Geissler went to Russia in 1790 to teach drawing. In 1793 and 1794 he accompanied the naturalist Peter Simon Pallas on his second scientific expedition to southern Russia, and then spent a few years in the Crimea with the naturalist. On his return to his hometown of Leipzig, he published several books on Russia illustrated with drawings he had made there. The text was written by Johann Gottfried Richter, also a native of Leipzig, who was a tutor in Moscow for 16 years. In his commentaries he shows great knowledge of the customs, as well as great tenderness towards the Russian people. - A good copy of this unusual and rare work.

Atuf is a mythical warrior from the folklore of the Tanimbar people who defeated the sun. Macedonian Gandhara, Pushkalavati, Hellenistic period, 4th century BC. The earring consisting of a Greek amphora made of three glass beads and flanked by two gold dolphins, below a circular floral element in gold with granulation. The earring was found in Charsadda, Pakistan, a town near Peshawar that was once Pushkalavati, the capital of the ancient region of Gandhara. The classical Greek or Macedonian design indicates this earring was crafted by a goldsmith who came with Alexander the Great’s troops, who conquered Gandhara in 327 BC.Provenance: Private collection of a German artist and collector living in Southeast Asia.Condition: Very good condition with minor traces of age and wear, fine copper-red patina.Weight: 2.6 gDimensions: Size 4.3 x 1.4 cm
