ROBERT SCOTT LAUDER R.S.A. 'The unfortunate mistress of a weak King leans against the cross in an attitude of deep sorrow and humiliation, with an air of womanly shame, which is as beautifully conceived as it is exquisitely rendered. The varied expressions upon the faces of those who gaze upon her degradation, are well shadowed forth; some in pity, some in doubt, some in anger, look upon her; but she, 'the observed of all observers ', with downcast eyes and heavy heart, irresistibly draws all our attention and pity. This is in itself a proof of the great ability Mr Lauder has exercised upon the subject, which absorbs attention entirely on the principal figure.'Charles Baille de Laperriere, R.S.A Exhibitors, 1826-1990

ITHELL COLQUHOUN (1906-1988) ILLUSTRATIONS FOR THE LIVING STONES, 1957: DESERTED MINE, REDRUTH; THE WITCH'S ROCK, ZENNOR; SUNLIGHT ON ROCK-POOL; BOATS AT PENBERTH; FALLEN TREE, LAMORNA; THE MEN-AN-TOL; FUNGUS ON TREE, LAMORNA TURN Seven, black ink with brush and nib, some heightened with white, each with the artist's printed label on the backboard 15 x 23cm. and smaller (7) Colquhoun had the unusual distinction of being a female artist who was also an occultist, a Surrealist and a poet. These diverse interests, all based around the forces of the spirit and imagination, imbued her art with a highly original style. Because of her rebellious nature (which prompted her expulsion from The London Surrealist Group in 1940), she pursued her ideas independently from her Penzance home. However, Colquhoun's membership of a Druid Order and a sect of Freemasonry (that admitted women members) brought her into contact with some highly progressive schools of thought and she never wavered from her pursuit of "magic realism" in the course of a long and innovative career. ++ Each in good condition

Sir John Everett Millais, P.R.A., 1829-1896, king lear and cordelia, inscribed on a sheet of writing paper attached to the backing: 10 March 91 The little sketch of Lear is my work when I was a lad/... J E Millais, oil on panel, 27x23cm., 10.5x9in. This early oil painting by Millais shows the moment in ShakespeareÕs play when King Lear Ð his madness abating Ð sees and recognises his daughter Cordelia. The rich old-masterly colouring and the emphatic characterisation of the figures suggest that Lear and Cordelia was painted in the late 1840s, during a period in which Millais was exploring different historical painting styles. Millias was strongly drawn to literary subjects in his early career. Drawings and paintings of Shakespearean themes occur from about 1848 onwards, the first being an oil sketch for The Death of Romeo and Juliet (Manchester City Art Gallery). A year later, after the formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he painted Ferdinand and Ariel (Tate). Millais' particular interest in subjects from King Lear was shared, and perhaps to some degree indebted to, his friend Ford Madox Brown, who had begun a painting in 1848, also inspired by act 4, scene 7 of the play (Tate). Provenance Sotheby's, 25 March 1964, lot 206 (bought by Ashford); Private collection

Lot 1

Wilhelm List, Austrian 1864-1918, Apollo und die Schwane (Apollo Charming the Swans), signed , oil on canvas, 123x351cm., 48.5x138in. Painted circa 1897-98, this picture was exhibited in the first Secessionist exhibition in Vienna, with the title Letzten Sang, den Sang des Todes, Lehrt den Schwan, des Sanges Gott. In Greek mythology, Leto, who conceived twins with Zeus, was pursued by the jealous goddess Hera, Zeus' wife. Trying to prevent her from giving birth, Hera forced Leto to roam the earth. However, the pregnant Leto could not find a place to rest as Hera had forbidden earth to allow her to give birth in any sunlit place. The only place to seek shelter was the island of Delos in the Aegan Sea, which had appeared after Poseidon, divinity of the sea, had dropped the water level. As this island was said to be floating, it was not under Hera's prohibition. Before Leto gave birth to Artemis and Apollo, the island was encircled by a flock of swans. This is why swans were sacred to Apollo. In addition the legend tells that during the birth of the gods, holy swans flew around the island. As a gesture of thanks Delos was secured to the sea-bed by four columns to give it stability, becoming one of the most important sanctuaries to Apollo. Provenance George Encil (sale: Sotheby's, London, 21 November 1989, lot 74) Purchased at the above sale by the present owner Exhibited Vienna, Erste Sezession, 1898, no. 370 Kunstsalon Bruko, 1914, no. 37 Literature W. Mackay served in Calabria in 1806, was present at the battle of Maida and the capture of Catrone. He joined the 78th (Seaforth) Highlanders and was engaged in the campaign in Egypt under Sir Ralph Abercromby. He was present at the attack on the fort and heights of Alexandria in 1807, the siege of Rosetta, and in the actions at El Hamet on the 20th and 21st of April that year where he commanded the Grenadier Company as recorded in the Soldier's diary, an extract of which is paraphrased below: "On 20th of April 1807 the Grenadier's Company of the 78th egiment with five other Companies were ordered from the English lines before Rosetta to the village of El Hamed. By day-break on the 21st we were a good deal astonished to find that the enemy had been strongly reinforced during the night. Lt. Col. McLeod gave orders for the Artillery to get ready for retreating and to march as soon as possible. The enemy had a position on the opposite side of the river and could see everything we did, consequently they got under arms and came down upon us like a torrent and surrounded us. Before Colonel McLeod could do any more than issue his orders, Captain MacKay with the Grenadiers of the 35th were warmly engaged in that quarter. In the heat of this bloody business Captain Mackay ran to the rear in order to assist in bringing up into action a small field-piece that was deserted and received his first wound in the head. Upon this and finding it impossible to bring the gun forward, he immediately rejoined his Company who were very soon after cut to pieces. Captain Mackay was the only officer in the division who survived that melancholy catastrophe and on seeing his Company annihilated, was determined to make a push and join the division that was then in existence, he accordingly commenced his march sword in hand. Soon after he set out he received a wound in the foot from a dart thrown at him by a dragoon, which impeded his progress materially, and after a thousand hairbreadth escapes he got within two hundred yards of the long looked for division, but it would appear that his misfortunes waylaid him for there when so near, he received a dreadful wound in the back of his neck which extended from ear to ear. The captured troops and officer's including Mackay were then imprisoned. 'Early in the month of May we arrived at Balak where we were treated with the most gross indignities by the natives. We were at length brought to the Bashaw's palace, the men were sent to prison and the officers had an audience of His Excellency, the Bashaw. On September 12th a Janizary was sent to escort Captain Mackay and a Captain Vincenzo, the interpreter to the Bashaw, and were each presented with an Arabian horse and a sabre". AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE 8.5MM GABBET-FAIRFAX 'MARS' SELF-LOADING PISTOL, serial no. 47, 11 1/4in. overall, with blued barrel with raised sighting rib engraved 'MARS PISTOL 8.5MM', round rotating bolt with twin cocking lugs, blued frame with two long cylinders housing the recoil springs extending under the barrel, bright hammer, grooved trigger, magazine with lanyard-ring, smooth walnut grips, and some original blued finish. Footnote: The Mars pistol was developed in 1900 by Hugh Gabbet-Fairfax and was available in 8.5mm, 9mm and .45 (both long & short chambering). The first twelve prototypes were made by Webley & Scott under the direction of William Whiting who went on to design Webley’s successful series of self-loading pistols. The Mars was noted for having exceptional ballistics in their day, the .45 being the most powerful pistol in the world for a time. Gabbet-Fairfax was declared bankrupt by 1903 and production was resumed by the Mars Pistol Syndicate although this too suffered bankruptcy in 1907. It is not known exactly how many Mars pistols were manufactured during it’s troubled life, most estimates being around 60 although one pistol is known with a serial number of 195. The British War Office tested the pistol as a possible replacement for the .455 Webley service revolver but ultimately rejected it due to excessive recoil, muzzle-flash, and the complexity of its long recoil design. It was also noted that the spent cases were ejected out of the back of the pistol – directly into the face of the firer. Brian Boyan, owner of Worcester Gunsmiths, retired this year after more than 40 years in the gun trade. His life mirrors the development of guns and shooting since the end of the Second World War. He spent 12 years as Winchester’s gunsmith, making kickers and undertaking 2,000 repairs in that time. It is not surprising that his favourite Winchester model is the 101 – a gun that was a landmark in the post-war history of the shotgun. “It was the best gun they ever made,” says Brian. “Everything else stems from that gun.” Winchester made a line of these guns in the 1970s and 1980s. They were all made in Japan and are all extremely good quality. The model included a field grade, pigeon grade, and diamond grade with an XTR and lightweight thrown in for good measure. All are over/under, break-action guns. Some came in three barrel sets of different gauges. One of the models that firmly established the over-and-under concept as the gun of choice for competition clay shooting, it was not especially radical in design terms, being loosely based on the Browning B25, but it handled well, was affordable and came with Japanese build quality. Since the closure of the plant in Japan, the name has lain fallow. At first an engineer, Brian learnt his trade with Dr MK Durek, a Czech who worked at Webley & Scott in Birmingham and who designed pistols for them. Pistols are one of Brian’s great loves and he has two important lots in this sale – lot 302, the desirable London made Colt Navy percussion revolver, serial number three and lot 333, the rare Mars pistol. After founding Worcester Gunsmiths in 1958, Brian went on to compete in standard and free pistol events at an international level. A former secretary of the North Worcester Rifle & Revolver Club when Sir Gerald Nabarro was chairman, Brian was British Class B champion in 1961. He complains, however, that all the internationals he took part in were shot in this country – he never had the opportunity to compete abroad! Brian’s knowledge of gunmaking and the trade spans two generations. In his archive, Brian has the original blueprints of the WW Greener St George’s gun. The firm's famous St George exhibition guns were built in the early 20th century with carved St George and the Dragon motifs. It was one of Greener’s “G guns”, whose genesis came in 1881, when WW patented his Self-Acting Ejector (no 2003). It was the Birmingham firm's first G gun, an amalgam of Greener's 1880 patent (n

A Scottish early 19th century mahogany lady's writing table, bearing the label of Cunningham & McWilliam, Cabinet Makers, Kilmarnock, the super structure three quarter gallery and two open shelves above a dummy fronted up and over cupboard enclosing six birds eye maple drawers flanked by cupboards enclosing pigeonholes and similar drawers, the table with foldover tip enclosing gilt tooled skiver above frieze drawer with internal pen and ink drawer and flanking lopers raised on a square section tapering legs with spade feet 74cm, 117cm, 46cm deep Note; This table conforms closely to the specification of a Lady's Writing Table in the Edinburgh Cabinet and Chair Makers Books of Prices published in 1805 and 1811. It is however finished to an extremely high quality and is of particular note for the label applied to the underside of one of the internal drawers, which reads as follows. Cunningham & McWilliam, Cabinet Makers At their New Ware-house, back of the Church-yard, Kilmarnock Have always ready for inspection, a variety of Trafalgar Dining Tables, Pillar and Claw Sofa, Card, and Pembroke Tables, Dumb Waiters, Cylinder Desks, Straight and Round Fronted Drawers, . , with a variety of Fashionable Chairs. A. Mc.Having been employed for a number of years in the most respectable Houses in London, he flatters himself they will be able to give every satisfaction to those who may honour them with their employ; and from the correspondence he has formed in London, he is regularly furnished with the newest Fashions in the Metropolis. Two similar but less distinguished anonymous writing tables are illustrated in the introduction to the facsimile of the Edinburgh Cabinet and Chair Makers Books of Prices published in 2000, plates 28 and 29, both displaying the distinctive foldover top. This feature can be traced back to a particularly Scottish 18th century form of furniture called a Lady's Closet , effectively a larger cabinet version of this piece, which also incoporated this characteristic foldover writing surface. Ayrshire had a strong tradition of fine cabinet making, Ayr itself producing the firms of Matthew Morison, who provided the celebrated furniture for Blairquhan, and Gordon and Watson, who frequently applied labels to their furniture similar to the one found on this piece (see the dressing table from Sundrum Castle, Ayr, sold in these rooms as part of the Pallinsburn House sale 4th May 2005, lot 561).
