an autograph book with signatures obtained by the vendor, Sheila Shorten, when she went to see the Beatles at the Gaumont, Bournemouth in August 1963. The Book was bought by Sheila especially for the occasion and contains all four Beatles signatures on one page, plus autographs of the other artists from the bill that evening comprising Tommy Quickly , Billy J Kramer plus Ray Jones and Robin MacDonald of his Dakotas, all five members of the obscure R&B band The Sons of the Piltdown Men and Gary & Lee. Sheila writes as follows: "My friend and I both went to the concert wearing A-Line Red Skirts and Black Roll Neck Sweaters. At the end of the concert my friend and I rushed round the the Stage Door where we caught Billy J Kramer and Tommy Quickly who gave us their autographs along with others. We were told that the Beatles had left but were on the balcony of a nearby hotel. We found the hotel and because of our outfits we were noticed by the Beatles. We shouted for their autographs and were let in to the hotel and the autograph book takes to the Beatles, but we were not allowed out on to the Balcony but they did wave to us". As Sheila wasn't present in the room at the time of the signing, it is possible that some or all of the Beatles signatures were signed by different band members to the names, or by the likes of Neil Aspinall. The Book also includes a Donovan signature which Sheila obtained some time later and stuck into the book together with a page of unidentified signatures. (2) Provenance: from the collection of the late Hubert René Joseph Georges Faure (1919-2020). Hubert Faure was the first husband of Elizabeth (Bessie) de Cuevas, who married when she was nineteen. Bessie was the daughter of Margaret Rockefeller, granddaughter of John D Rockefeller. This form of ewer is known in Chinese as a duomuhu and it is derived from the Tibetan bey lep. Bey lep literally translates as 'container for butter', but these vessels were also used to store milk, wine and milk tea in Lamaist monasteries. The shape is believed to have first appeared in China during the Yuan dynasty and, after little use in the Ming dynasty, was revived under the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662-1722) during the Qing dynasty. His interest in Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism led to the resurgence of the duomuhu form, notably in metalwork and porcelain. Cf. Ca. 100-300 AD. Roman. A well-preserved door fitting made of iron which was part of an ancient Roman lock mechanism. The body, which features incised decoration, is rectangular and has a circular loop on one terminal and a rectangular loop on the other terminal. The Romans were great innovators who quickly managed to improve upon Greek and Egyptian locks by introducing metals as their primary materials. By utilizing iron locks, Romans were finally able not only to fashion strong protection mechanisms against brute-force attacks, but also keys, which for the first time were small enough that they could be worn in pockets or as a pendant. To find out more about the history and evolution of ancient locks, see Eras, V. J. M. (1957). Locks and Keys throughout the Ages. New York: Lip's Safe and Lock Manufacturing Company.Good condition. Size: L:77mm / W:23mm ; 35g. Provenance: From the private collection of an Essex gentleman; previously in an old British Collection, formed in the 1990s.

This type of cross could open and was made to hold a small relic or a prayer document. Relics, as the physical remains of saints or objects associated with Christ, held tremendous power in medieval Christianity. Such crosses were worn by the knights who fought in the Holy Lands. For more information on reliquary crosses, see Boas, A. J. (2016). Crusader Archaeology - The Material Culture of the Latin East. Taylor & Francis, 158. Size: L:87mm / W:50mm ; 45g. Ca. 900-1100 AD. Viking. A beautifully preserved iron sword with a double-edged bevelled and pointed blade and wide shallow groove; short guard and rectangular integrated grip. The blade is decorated with incised letters. The sword was an elite weapon during the Viking period, and only the most well-off warriors - the cavalry - would have been able to afford one. Such swords were used both by the Vikings and Khazars. The elite status of swords during the Viking age is made clear both by their presence in some of the richest graves as well as a law of Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor, which requires soldiers who could afford to maintain a horse to be equipped with a sword. For more information on Viking swords, see Peirce, I. & Oakeshott, E. (eds.) (2009). Swords of the Viking Age. Boydell & Brewer Ltd. Size: L:810mm / W:80mm ; 1.1kg. Lot 310

Ca. 100-300. Roman. A penannular bronze bracelet with a round-section band featuring ribbed decoration and lozengiform terminals shaped as crested snakes heads. In Greek and Roman culture, there were certainly healing associations with snakes as snakes were an attribute of the healing god Asclepius, who is often depicted with a serpent-entwined rod. To find out more about Roman bracelets and jewellery production, see Higgins, R. (1980). Greek and Roman jewellery. London: Methuen. Size: L:66mm / W:78mm ; 41g. Provenance: Property of a London gentleman, part of his family collection formed in the 1980s-2000.

Lot 313

Ca. 100-300 AD. A gold ring with a circular band, flared shoulders, and an oval bezel set with a carnelian gem; the delicate intaglio depicts a scorpion. Excellent condition, wearable. It also comes with a gemological and historical report by an independent specialist Anna Rogers. This analysis will accompany the purchase. The scorpion was the emblem of the Praetorian Guard, the Roman emperor's personal army elite unit. The praetorian scorpion has long been recognised as a reference to Tiberius, who was born under the astrological sign of the Scorpio, and who first concentrated praetorian guard in its own camp in Rome, thus giving it full corporate identity (Russell and Hellström 2020, 135). Hence, it is not inconceivable that this ring might have belonged to a praetorian guard. Cf. Russell, A., Hellström, M. (2020). The social dynamics of Roman imperial imagery. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.Size: D: 19.51mm / US: 9 5/8 / UK: T; 4.7g. Provenance: Property of a central London Ancient Art Gallery; previously obtained from a British private collection formed in the 1980s.

Lot 354

Ca. 600-400 BC. Eastern Mediterranean. A very well preserved short iron sword of the akinakes type (Greek 'ἀκῑνάκης') with a pointed bevelled blade, bow-shaped guard, rectangular grip, and ellipsoidal pommel; custom-made stand included. The akinakes, a short straight sword, became very well known to fifth-century BC Greeks, who recognised it as 'the Persian sword' (Herodotus 7.54.2), and collected them as part of their war booty (Herodotus 9.80.2) - inventories show that a good number of akikanes swords were dedicated on the Athenian Acropolis as a votive offering to Athena (Miller 1997, 47). Akinakes swords can be identified on the reliefs at Persepolis, the capital of the Achaemenid Empire, where men in Persian dress can be seen wearing it thrust through the knot of their robes. Akinakes were also used by the Medes, Scythians, the Caspii, and later by the Greek themselves. Akinakes were made most commonly of iron, but some examples survive in gold, which Herodotus (8.120) tells us were a standard royal gift: Xerxes, for instance, gave a gold akinakes to the Hellespont along with a gold phiale and a bowl (Herodotus 7.54.2). To find out more about akinakes swords, see Miller, M. C. (1997). Athens and Persia in the Fifth Century BC: A Study in Cultural Receptivity. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 46-48. Size: L:540mm / W:70mm ; 665g. Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1990s on the UK / International art markets.
