Churchill for S.C. Mr Churchill is very grateful to you for all the trouble you took on that occasion', signed by Churchill's personal private secretary R.E.K. Hill, one page, 8vo, some spotting, original cloth indust jacket, slightly rubbed and soiled, spine browned with a little fraying and loss at head and foot, 8vo Sidney Campbell Dyke (1886-1975) was a bacteriologist who worked for a time at St Thomas's Hospital, London. He is best-remembered for the creation of the Association of Clinical Pathologists, extending its ideals by starting the European Association of Clinical Pathology in 1941 (now the International Society). In a letter circulated to members of the ACP he wrote: 'Mr Winston Churchill has pointed out the duty laid upon each and all is to strive to become 'good Europeans'. This demands an acquaintance and contact with our fellow Europeans closer than we as people have sought or have been sought from us in the past'. Mary Spencer-Churchill (1922-2014) was the youngest of the five children of Winston Churchill and his wife, Clementine. She was the wife of Christopher Soames and created Baroness Soames. In September 1941 Mary joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service and served in one of the new 'mixed' anti-aircraft batteries and the letter refers to an illness she had then. (1)

Caucasus. Ptolemy (Claudius & Holle Lienhart), published Ulm, [1482 - 1486], woodblock map on a trapezoidal projection with contemporary hand colouring, showing modern day southern Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, slight creasing, 400 x 530 mm, Latin text to verso Lienhart Holle published a revised edition of Ptolemy's Geographia in 1482. The atlas would prove to be ruinously expensive and his business would go bankrupt shortly after publication. The remaining stock of maps, woodblocks and the types passed to Johann Reger in Ulm, who reissued the work in 1486. The main difference between the two editions is that the 1482 state has a deep blue colour in the sea, whereas in the 1486 edition the sea is a soft brown. (1)
