BRUNN Sword Cutler to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales 56 Charing Cross London, the upper mount also engraved with owner's initials JPK, a contemporarily added copper gilt mount states The Gift of J.P. Kemble Esq. to J. Cooper 1817. John Philip Kemble (1757-1823) was famous for having a duel with the Irish actor James Aickin in 1792, having been challenged by his deputy manager after a row over working practices at the Drury Lane Theatre where Kemble was manager. They set up the duel in Marylebone; Aickin took aim at Kemble with his pistol and missed. Kemble refused to return fire and after discussion the two men were reconciled. An English actor famed particularly for his Shakespearian roles, Kemble was the brother of actress Sarah Siddons who was immortalised in Gainsborough's famous portrait. There are numerous portraits of Kemble by artists such as Sir Thomas Lawrence, James Gillray, William Beechey and Benjamin Holl. Known for playing dramatic roles, he is often depicted carrying a sword, for example in the roles of Rolla, Hamlet, Cato and Richard III. After playing his final role as Coriolanus (one of many Roman characters that he portrayed), he retired from acting in 1817, the year that this sword is inscribed as a gift from Kemble to J. Cooper.

Lot 185

A scarce Octagonal Hilted Commando Knife, 17.2cm flattened diamond section blade with slightly off-set medial ridge, sharpened for use and with blackened finish, characteristic crossguard and octagonal cast alloy hilt with flush fitted pommel nut, contained in its textured leather scabbard. Generally in very good condition though the casting of the grip is slightly crude and misformed towards the pommel. Please refer to plate 161 on page 71 of Ron Flook's book British and Commonwealth Military Knives for an identical knife and scabbard, the only difference being that the knife illustrated has a proud pommel nut. By descent the property of 2nd Lt Phillip Leonard Davison Yorks & Lancs Regiment, who served in the Norway Campaign where he was wounded and then captured. There is no suggestion that this knife was carried by Davison in Norway, having had the lower part of his leg removed due to a grenade blast he was repatriated from Germany in 1943 so may have acquired it upon his return. Davison went on to serve as a Major in the Territorial Army. As far as this knife is concerned academics will be interested to learn that Davison hailed from Sheffield and his Father was a member of the management team at H H Swann & Son, while principally saw maker's this may suggest a clue to the origins of this type of knife.

Sold on behalf of Children in Need: Bank of England, ‘Jane Austen’ £5, serial no. AM32 885552, the current polymer note as issued in the United Kingdom in September 2016, this example bearing an engraved portrait of Jane Austen by micro-artist Graham Short placed on the transparent section of the note beside Big Ben; the portrait encircled by the quotation To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love (from Pride and Prejudice, chapter 3), with a central fold and evidence of light circulation but remaining in excellent condition, one of just four celebrated and widely-publicised examples placed in circulation before Christmas, 2016, in a double-sided glazed display frame. Following the issue of the new polymer British five-pound note in September 2016, Graham Short engraved four consecutively-numbered examples with portraits of Jane Austen surrounded by four different quotations from her novels, making each note unique. Inspired by the ‘Golden Tickets’ from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and in collaboration with the Tony Huggins-Haig Gallery in Kelso, Short anonymously released his notes into general circulation, triggering a substantial ‘good news’ media storm during December 2016. The notes were simply spent at small family-owned businesses at chosen locations in Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales. A fifth and final engraved note was personally presented by Graham Short to the Jane Austen Centre in Bath on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the author’s death (in July, 1817). This bicentenary has now been much more widely marked, of course, by the introduction of the new Jane Austen polymer ten pound note which entered general circulation in September 2017. Whilst Graham Short’s Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish specimens of the Jane Austen £5 have now been discovered in circulation by members of the public, the English example remains - at the time of writing - at large. The note offered here, serial no. AM32 885552, was found by a lady in Northern Ireland who generously returned it to the Tony Huggins-Haig Gallery with an accompanying letter reading ‘...£5 note enclosed, I don’t need it at my time of life. Please use it to help young people. Kindest regards...’ Respecting her wishes, the Tony Huggins-Haig Gallery and Graham Short decided to forward the note to the BBC Children in Need Appeal, 2017. In accordance with the anonymous donor’s wishes, all proceeds from the sale of the note will be presented to the BBC Children in Need Appeal.

Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) for The Rebel Art Centre or Omega Workshops Robe, circa 1914 embroidered and block-printed silk robe with stylised foxes, fish, swans and kneeling figures 132cm long. Literature: Geoffrey Rayner, Richard Chamberlin and Annamarie Stapleton, Artist's Textiles 1949-1976, pp.14-15, plates 4a and 4b, similar example illustrated. Another textile panel with the same design was also sold in Textiles as Art: From the Collection of Paul Reeves in February 2017. The hand-blocked art silk robe in Artist's Textiles 1949-1976 was assessed by Dr. Linda Parry of the Victoria and Albert Museum's Department of Textiles to be the work of an avant-garde English artist, circa 1914. It was subsequently seen by the authority on the Omega Workshops and Rebel Art Centre, Dr. Judith Collins, who identified this design as the work of Wyndham Lewis. Although closely related to Lewis's slightly earlier applied designs for the Omega Workshops and The Cabaret Theatre Club, Dr. Collins considered it to date from 1914 and the period of Lewis's involvement with the Rebel Art Centre.

William Strang (1859-1921) Head of a Girl, purportedly Eileen O'Henry oils on canvas on board 29.8cm x 21cm. Provenance: W. B. Simpson Gallery, Glasgow; Collection of J. E. Pettigrew Esq.; Michael Parkin Fine Art Ltd., London, 1981; Private Collection. The sitter is believed to be Eileen O'Henry, known as 'Dolly', who was shot dead by her lover, the artist John Currie in 1914. John Currie was an artist of whom it says in the 'Dictionary of British Artists 1900-1950' the following: 'Established a relationship with Miss Dolly Henry and lived with her in Hampstead. This came to a bizarre end when he shot himself and his mistress in a fit of jealously and died the following day, 9th October 1914, in Chelsea Infirmary.' Dolly O'Henry was a professional model in Chelsea, posing for many artists including Frank Dobson and Augustus John. It is known that Dolly O'Henry was sitting for a portrait by Strang in the period of her death.
