Follower of Emile Jean Horace Vernet (French, 1789-1863), Italian Brigands surprised by Papal Troops, oil on canvas laid on board, mid-19th century, in early 19th century gilded frame, 7 7/8 x 11¼in. (19.7 x 28.5cm.), * This is related to the painting by Horace Vernet in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore which was originally exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1831. While sharing the same general composition, this oil study varies in many respects to the exhibited work. Vernet executed the painting during his tenure as Principal of the Ecole de France in Rome, a post that he occupied between 1828 and 1834. In this scene papal troops ambush Italian brigands who are looting a coach and carrying off its passengers. During the early 19th century brigands or 'banditi' presented a real threat to travellers in the Italian countryside but some idealised them as daring outlaws.

A Second World War Fascist ‘Zbor’ Yugoslav National Movement Members Stick Pin bearing the sword and shield device of Dimiture Ljotic political party, together with an enamel ‘Yugoslav Action’ lapel badge (2). £40 - 60 Yugoslav National Movement(Jugoslavenski narodni pokret), also known as the United Militant Labour Organization (Združena borbena organizacija rada, or Zbor) was a Yugoslav fascist movement led by politician Dimitrije Ljotić. Founded in 1935, it received considerable German financial and political assistance during the interwar period and participated in the 1935 and 1938 parliamentary elections, in which it never received more than 1 percent of the popular vote. Following the Axis invasion and occupation of Yugoslavia in April 1941, the Germans selected several Zbor members to join the Serbian puppet government Milan Nedić. The Serbian Volunteer Corps (SDK) was established as Zbor's party army. Ljotić had no control over the SDK, which was commanded by Colonel Kosta Mušicki. In late 1944, Ljotić and his followers retreated to Slovenia with the Germans and other collaborationist formations. In March, Ljotić and Chetnik leader Draža ć agreed on a last-ditch alliance against the Yugoslav Partisans. Ljotić's followers were placed under the command of Chetnik commander Miodrag Damjanović. Ljotić was killed in an automobile accident in late April 1945. His followers later fled to Italy alongside the Chetniks. The Western Allies extradited many back to Yugoslavia following the war, where they were summarily executed and buried in mass graves. Those who were not extradited immigrated to western countries and established émigré organizations intended to promote Zbor's political agenda.

WW2 Battle of Kohima Military Medal (MM), George VI example awarded to “2322107 SJT R W SANGER R SIGNALS”. Medal is housed in the original forwarding box with Buckingham Palace forwarding letter. Some letters in the regiment have been corrected to the medal but otherwise very good condition. The MM appeared in the London Gazette 28th June 1945 and the recommendation is as follows, “Between 19 April 1944 and 20 June 1944, this N.C.O. showed consistent devotion to duty and disregard of danger in his eagerness to establish line communications in the Kohima area. His cheerful bearing during long periods of very hard work was a constant inspiration to his detachment and he never allowed enemy action to interfere with the job in hand. In particular on 9 May 1944, he laid a line to the 4 Inf. Bde. up a mule track on which he well knew Jap. patrols were active. The line was cut by the enemy and he had to be restrained by an officer from going out alone to attempt repair. Again on 26, 27 and 28 May 1944 whilst attached to 6 Inf. Bde. for the ascent and attack on Aradura Spur he exceeded his orders and laid beyond Bde. H.Q., through the leading battalion and to the 143 S.S. Coy. who were the leading troops. He was specially recommended for his work on this occasion to me by C.O., 1 R.Berks. who was shortly afterwards evacuated wounded. Generally a great deal of his work was done under fire and he constantly laid lines through territory in which it was known enemy parties were operating.”

Literature: An almost identical writing table in the manner of John McLean. Lot 130. Christie's, London, Important English Furniture Thursday 9th July 1998, another Lot 70. Christie's April 2001 and Lot 102 Sotheby's 4th July 1997. According to The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700 - 1840, (Christopher Gilbert), the eminent firm of cabinet-makers and "upholders" (sic) - John McLean & Son - was founded by a "Jn McLane" from premises near Leicester Square in 1770. Remaining based in London, the firm produced fine cabinets and desks in the "French taste" influenced by the style of Louis XVI, using cast and metal mounts. Of the highest calibre, the firm was instructed by leading connoisseurs such as the 5th Earl of Jersey to provide furniture for his house at Middleton Park, Oxfordshire and for his London mansion in Berkeley Square. Mentioned in Thomas Sheraton's "Cabinet Dictionary" of 1803 - "Mr Mclean in Mary-le-bone Street… who finishes these small articles in the neatest manner" - he consistently displayed a delicate design, often inspired by French prototypes and the frequent use of dark wood as a foil to the chased gilt brass mounts or inlay. As a result of this, many unlabelled pieces can be safely attributed to John McLean.

Lot 1041

A set of four William IV mahogany hall chairs, with boldly carved c-scroll backs centred in relief by the arms of the Neave family, with panel seats, on gadroon moulded legs (4) 99 x 47cm (39 x 18in) Other Notes: The Neave Family, Dagnam Park, Essex Sir Richard Neave (1721-1814) was a city merchant who made his fortune in the West Indies and was created Governor of the Bank of England in 1780. In 1772, he bought Dagnam Estate in Essex. He demolished the existing house and rebuilt a splendid Georgian house nine bays wide by four deep. Shortly before his death he commissioned the famous garden designer Humphry Repton to advise on the redesign of the grounds. In 1842, Sir Thomas Neave built the Church in the neighbouring village of Noak Hill where a number of the family were buried. [Lots: silver bears inscriptions]. Three with some losses to the carved armorial and two with old repars to the backs at seat rail level, where fixings have been improved.

Lot 186

An Edwardian diamond tiara, the gift of the 6th Earl Spencer to his daughter, composed of alternating linear and oval motifs in a graduated almost complete circlet, and set with more than eight hundred old round brilliant, old European and old cushion cut diamonds, total estimated weight approximately 48cts; the tiara is held on its cushioned frame by tiny and beautifully engineered wing-topped screws, so that it may be removed, and it then divides by means of hidden clasps, the central three sections becoming a choker necklace (length 35cm) and the two outer sections joining to form a bracelet (currently lacks one clasp, but another could readily be copied and requires no diamonds), length 19cm. Stylistically, this tiara is a rarity, with its clean lines and sleek forms, both reminiscent of Neo-Classical and French Empire styles and also foreshadowing the geometric shapes of Art Deco jewellery. The diamonds are most likely to have been cut in the 19th century and are of commensurate high quality - bright, white, clean and lively. The craftsmanship is superb, and its adaptability into various jewels has been achieved with great and subtle skill. Provenance: The tiara was given by Charles Robert Spencer, the 6th Earl, to his daughter Lady Delia Spencer on the occasion of her marriage in 1914; thence by inheritance. Lady Delia (Adelaide) Spencer was the eldest child of the 6th Earl. Born in 1889, her childhood was a typical late Victorian aristocratic idyll, abruptly ended by the death of her mother when Delia was only just 17. She had no formal education, but was a gifted musician ('cello and piano) and continued for the while to have lessons at the Royal College of Music. But her father, then Viscount Althorp, had many social and political duties, so Delia, to a great extent, took on her mother's rôle as hostess, manager of the households in London and Northamptonshire, and a mother figure to her five younger siblings. Four years later, in 1910, her father inherited the Earldom from his much older half-brother, and Delia's position was settled in the heart of not only aristocratic and royal circles, but also of the movers and shakers of the day, usually much older than her. This was a formidable education. By family tradition, this is the tiara Delia's father gave her on the occasion of her marriage, on February 18th 1914, to the Hon. Sidney Peel, younger son of the 1st Lord Peel, Speaker of the House of Commons and grandson of the Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel: he was 42, she was 23. Such a gift was customary: Delia's own youthful (spasmodic) diaries record several instances of tiaras as gifts, and twice to a bride when she herself was one of the bridesmaids. In the photograph of her wedding day, as the happy couple emerge from the church, the outline of the tiara can be made out under the (now thrown back) veil. The Times of 13th February, 1914 gave an extensive report of the forthcoming nuptials, listing all the important personel and describing the bride's dress (white satin trimmed with a flounce of old point d'argenton lace, and a family Brussels lace veil). It also mentioned the guard of honour provided by Sidney's squadron of the Bedfordshire Yeomanry, and the article was dominated by a list of the presents received - a diamond brooch from Queen Alexandra, pearl and diamond pendant from Princess Victoria, and - 'From Earl Spencer: a diamond tiara, a moonstone and diamond pendant, a nova mina and diamond brooch, a ruby guard ring…' Many years later, in the 1930s, Delia records her younger sister, Lady Margaret Douglas-Home, wearing her tiara to a dance at Norfolk House. Delia herself adored dancing and seems to have had a great gift for ensuring the enjoyment of others. She was widowed in 1938, but unlike Queen Victoria (upon whose knee she reputedly once sat as a small child), she did not withdraw into permanent mourning. She was a close friend of the royal family, lady-in-waiting to the then Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother), and renowned for the fun and energy of her company with friends and family alike. Delia's father had died in 1922, and her brother Jack (Albert John) became the 7th Earl; his son Johnnie (Edward John) became the 8th Earl in 1975, and he was father of Lady Diana Spencer, who married Prince Charles in 1981 (the year Delia died) to become the Princess of Wales. Thus, Delia was Princess Diana's great aunt (and great great aunt to Prince William and Prince Harry). There were many plaudits both during Delia's lifetime and after her death, summed up by a niece who wrote: 'There are very few life enhancers in this world and Delia was definitely one. We all want to live our lives to the full, and when you were with Delia you felt just that extra spark of vitality and understanding which makes all the difference to life … Anybody who came in contact with her was the happier.' A hardback copy of her biography, 'A Memoir of the Lady Delia Peel, born Spencer, 1889-1981' by Priscilla Napier, is offered with this lot, together with a photocopied reproduction of the Times report of the wedding.

A pair of mid-18th century Bow white glazed figures of Kitty Clive and Henry Woodward in their roles as a 'Fine Lady' and a 'Fine Gentleman' in Garrick's farce, 'Lethe', 26cm (10.25 in) and 27cm (10.5 in) high respectively (2) (D) Literature: See Gabsewicz, 'Bow Porcelain', plates 186 and 187 Other Notes: Kitty Clive (1711-1785) was an actress and original member of David Garrick’s theatre company. She liked to play comedic roles and was regarded as one of the finest comedienne's of her time. She also played tragic roles, once playing the part of Hamlet, and sang the oratorios of her friend Handel. Henry Woodward (1714-1777) was a Shakespearian actor who joined Garrick's company in 1748. He worked alongside Kitty Clive as her comic opposite. He also wrote plays - his pantomime, Queen Mab, had a highly successful run in Drury Lane. Her hat is chipped. Lot 461

Three Doccia dishes, circa 1740-5, painted with Ottoman figures centrally to insects and flower sprigs on rims edged with interlacing ribbons, one of a man holding a bagpipe accompanied by a ram, another of a lady seated by a sheep, 36cm (14.25 in) wide and the smallest of a lady with a stork, 31cm (12.25 in) wide (3) (D) Other Notes: There seem to be just three other dishes from this series recorded. Two are in the Museo Richard-Ginori della Manifattura di Doccia, attributed to the painter Johann Carl Wendelin Anrieter von Zirnfeld (1702-47). A similarly attributed dish is in the Metropolitan Museum and is said to be after Jacopo Ligozzi (1547-1627). Arthur Lane in his 'Italian Porcelain' suggests that these dishes were painted by Anrieter's son, Stephan Carl (1727-1801) who would have been aged between 13 and 18 when these might have been painted. The album of 29 pages painted by Ligozzi may have been a commission from Niccolo Gaddi while the artist was in Florence. The album passed into the hands of Marchese Carlo Ginori in about 1740 giving Anrieter a direct source to copy from. 20 pages of this album are currently in the Uffizi. Each are worn and cracked across

François Jean-Baptiste Ménard de La Groye (French, 1775-1855) Panopea, studies of oystershells, the first featuring the eponymous "Panopea aldrovandi Ménard de La Groye", studies reproduced as plates 3 and 7 on pp. 66 and 70, in Chenu's Illustrations conchyliologiques, vol. II. (2) signed in gold lower left 'Ménard.' pencil and watercolour on vellum, and pencil numbering and inscriptions, a pair each sight size 36 x 26cm (14 x 10in) François Jean-Baptiste Ménard de la Groye (1775-1855), the unsung hero of natural history, was a 19th century French explorer and scientist who particularly distinguished himself by his discovery in 1807 of a new clam species, Panopea Ménard de La Groye, which is named in his honour. During his lifetime he gained fame for his studies of molluscs and his scientific expeditions throughout Europe. Born in Le Mans into a family of a distinguished jurist and deputy of the National Assembly during the French Revolution, Jean-Baptiste decided not to follow in his father's footsteps. He showed interest in neither law nor politics, and instead discovered his true calling during his visits to the Museum of Natural History whilst studying in Paris between 1799 and 1807. He quickly developed a fascination for natural sciences and soon went on to collaborate with well-known naturalists of his day, notably Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck (1744-1829) and Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847). A passionate geologist in particular, he travelled widely across Europe, collecting fossil specimens throughout France, Italy, Rhineland and Switzerland. His vast collection was bequeathed after his death to the National Museum of Natural History. His travel journals give an unprecedented scientific account of fauna, flora and geology he encountered on his voyages. In 1811, he briefly accompanied the wealthy American geologist of Scottish origin, Williams James Maclure (1763-1840), on his expedition to Switzerland to obtain funding for his travels, before falling out with him and continuing his Grand Tour of Switzerland on his own. In his writings, he meticulously observed and described various natural phenomena, notably volcanic activity that he witnessed during his excursions to Mount Vesuvius in 1813. Upon his return to Paris in 1814, he published his findings in a series of four articles in Journal de Physique. This attracted the attention of Georges Cuvier, the "father of paleonthology", who subsequently offered him a prominent teaching position in the Natural History Department at Collège de France. A large archival collection relating to his life and work was accordingly donated after his death to the Collège de France, where he went on to teach natural history between 1818 and 1827. The present collection of watercolours appears to be related to Ménard de la Groye's contributions to one of the rarest colour-plate publications on shells, Illustrations conchyliologiques ou description et figures de toutes les coquilles connues vivantes et fossiles..., by the naturalist Jean Charles Chenu (1808-1879), which was published in four volumes between 1842 and 1854. The majority of these are reproduced as colour plates in volume II.

A late 18th century turned ivory bottle and cover, Rosalba Carriera's paint box, the screw lid of the bottle shape opening to reveal nine petal edged palettes, the bulb shaped base unscrewing to reveal a compartment within, 14cm (5.5 in) high Provenance: A 19th Century letter contained in the base of the pot states that the present paint pallette pot was given by Rosalba Carriera to her pupil, Miss Gavin, who then in 1796 gave it to a Mary Sutherland, whose descendant, A.R. Sutherland wrote the provenance note in 1858. Other Notes: Rosalba Carriera (Italian, 1673-1757) was a Venetian Rococo painter. At the start of her career she specialised in portrait miniatures and later became renowned for her portraiture in pastels.

A Jamaican tortoiseshell comb in a silver mounted case dated 1688, one side of the rectangular case scratch engraved and gold dusted with an armorial with motto 'Indus Uterque Servietum' above the date, the reverse with 'A Cashu Tree', the comb with graded tines each side of floral engraving, the case 16 x 10cm (6.25 x 4 in) Other Notes: A very rare 17th century engraved tortoiseshell case from Port Royal, Jamaica, containing the original wig comb. The craftsman known for producing such pieces, Paul Bennett, worked in Port Royal between 1655, the year that Britain seized the island, and 1692 when the town was decimated by the Great Earthquake and tsunami. Little is known of Paul Bennett other than that he was an Englishman listed in the 1673 property records as a combmaker and was clearly familiar with the social mores of the Old World. The comb cases provide an important social document and evidence of a rising colonial mindset. Possession of a combcase of this material and craftsmanship was an important accessory for those who had made their fortunes in the New Land but wished to enter the cultural elite of the Old World. Randle Holme's "Academie of Armory" 1702, details wigcombs as a vital part of a gentleman's equipment. By couching the material trappings of their newfound wealth in a familiar but interestingly exotic form, colonial merchants and planters were able to display their newly attained social status and claim influential positions in European society. Research (Geoffrey Willis, 1957) has shown that there are only sixteen combcases known to exist; one on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum, eleven in the Institute of Jamaica and two in private collections.

A 'Surrey' enamelled brass knopped steel fire shovel and tongs, second half of the 17th century, the ball knops cast in brass and the recesses enamelled to enhance the pommels and knops on the cylindrical iron stems, the shovel 73cm (28.75 in) long (2) Exhibited: The Fitzwilliam and Victoria and Albert Museums possess candlesticks in 'Surrey' enamel work Literature: See Claude Blair and A Patterson, Journal of the Antique Metalware Society, 'Surrey Enamels Reattributed', 13th June 2005. Charles Beard, the Connoisseur, 'Surrey Enamels of the 17th century' 1931 Other Notes: It was Beard who coined the term 'Surrey' enamels and attributed the workshop for them to Esher. Blair 'Reattributed' them to the London Armourer's and Brazier's guild members, Stephen Pilcherd and Anthony Hatch, working from 1645-90. Enamel worked items would have been expensive then and there is a thought that there was a Royalist connection.

Antonio Chichi (1743-1816) '(Templo) Della Sibilla in Tivoli', a cork model, the round colonnaded building with traces of inscriptions on its cornice and resting on a square base, inscribed 'Chichi' on one edge, the base 46cm (18 in) square, the height 36cm (14.25 in) Other Notes: The Temple of the Vesta or, as it is also known, the Sybil in Tivoli, was one of the must-see attractions of the Grand Tour during the 18th and 19th century. This cork model of the temple (dating from 1st century BCE) was made towards the end of the 18th century. Cork models were made popular during the Grand Tour as they provided the traveller with an exact replica, light and small enough to take home. Curved cork boards were shaped and sculpted with exacting detail to create models to scale of the many Roman ruins; the porous nature of cork giving the impression of antiquity. Twigs and moss were used for soil and plants, and terracotta for reliefs and capitals. It is thought the architect Augusto Rosa created the first of the models. Following his death came Antonio Chichi (1743-1816) who produced probably the most famous cork models for sale to the grand tourists. Chichi is mentioned by many of his contemporary travellers including Goethe who referred to him in his 1786 diary, ‘Italian Journey’ The models were also used as teaching tools. There is a version of this model, together with many others, in the Sir John Soane Museum. It provided resources for those students who could not go on the Grand Tour and as a good substitute for teaching architecture. Models can also be found in the Victoria and Albert museum, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and in Berlin. There is a Chichi model of the temple in the Musée des Antiquités Nationales, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. This has some losses and damages

George Morland (British, 1763-1804) The Bell Inn at Kilburn, London oil on canvas 112 x 138cm (44 x 54in) Provenance: John Knight, Lea Castle, Wolverley, Kidderminster, March 1826, and by descent Other Notes: The son and pupil of the portrait painter and dealer Henry Morland (1716-1797), George Morland is especially known for his charming scenes of rural life. He was a precocious and prolific painter who learnt to draw at the age of three, exhibited at the Royal Academy at the age of ten and attained a considerable reputation among artists of repute by the age of seventeen. His talents were carefully cultivated by his father, who encouraged him to copy pictures of the Dutch and Flemish Old Masters in particular. He was even introduced to Sir Joshua Reynolds in order to obtain a permission to copy his paintings. George Morland produced a vast amount of work in spite of a dissolute lifestyle, drinking and hiding from his creditors and even ending up in prison. Several of Morland's works depict inns in a rustic countryside with signs featuring bells. A smaller comparable example by Morland showing a "Bell Inn" is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and a drawing at the Fitzwilliam Museum, "Mid-day Rest at the Bell Inn" captures a similar building and tree. This same scene at Kilburn is the subject of an engraving by John Raphael Smith after Morland, "The Return from the Market", published 1793, where the bell sign also features above the door. (see Richard S. Sabin, George Morland (1763-1804): A Descriptive Catalogue of a Collection of Sixty Colour Prints Engraved after His Paintings, exh. cat., Frank T. Sabin, London, 1935, no. 18). John Knight was an important landowner in the area around Kidderminster in Worcestershire, where his Wolverley and Lea estates were situated. He lived at Lea Castle, and was one of the most important patrons of James Ward. George Morland married James's sister Anne Nancy Ward in 1786. Lined and cleaned. The paint layer is stable. There is an old damage near the centre of the painting which has been repaired and is now obvious as the retouchings has discoloured over time. Varnish is glossy and even. There is some wear to the gilding on the frame but it is generally in a good condition. Old label: From John Knight, Lea Castle, Wolverley, Kidderminster, March 1826.

Schetky was educated at the Royal High School in Edinburgh, where he befriended a near contemporary, Walter Scott. Schetky studied art under Alexander Naysmyth, moving later to Oxford where he spent six years teaching as an arts master. After obtaining a post in 1808 at the Royal Military College at Great Marlow, he was appointed Professor of Drawing at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth. Condition appears fine.

Born in Rouen, Lemoine was a pastellist and miniaturist who studied under Deschamps in 1771 and from 1779 probably under Maurice-Quentin de la Tour (1704-1788). This portrait dates to the early 1790s, shortly after Lemoine began his career as a portrait miniaturist. Condition appears fine - small rub mark to gilt frame at the bottom edge.

English School (19th Century) Portrait of the jockey Job Marson (1817-1857) inscribed lower left "Dec. 1852" and sold with Mr Marson's racing whip oil on board (2) 58 x 44cm (23 x 17in) Other Notes: Job Marson (1817-1857) was a British classic winning jockey, whose most famous partnership came with Voltigeur, winner of the 1850 Derby and St. Leger. Voltigeur (1847–1874) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from 1849 to August 1852 he ran ten times and won five races. In 1850 he won the Epsom Derby and the St Leger against his fellow three-year-olds and then recorded his most famous victory when beating The Flying Dutchman in the Doncaster Cup. In May 1851 Voltigeur was beaten by The Flying Dutchman in what was probably the most celebrated match race in the history of British thoroughbred racing His first win came at Beverley in 1831, on a horse called Cinderella, and in his early years, he was much championed by fellow jockey Sim Templeman, getting many rides on his recommendation. His first big win came much later, in the 1841 Goodwood Cup, riding Charles XII. Within another two years he had won his first classic - the 1843 St. Leger on Nutwith. In 1847, he rode Van Tromp for Lord Eglinton in the Derby, coming third. Later that year, he went on to take the St. Leger on the horse. Rather than securing his position in Eglinton's favour, it had the opposite effect. Now suspecting that Marson had pulled Van Tromp in the Derby, Eglinton sacked him. Even Charles Marlow, Marson's successor as Eglinton's stable jockey, believed Marson to be innocent. The setback did not mar Marson's career too much. Lord Zetland took him on, and it was for Zetland that Marson would ride one of the supreme champion horses of the 19th century, Voltigeur, who won both the Derby and the St. Leger in 1850. For Sir Joseph Hawley, Marson won the 1851 1,000 Guineas on Aphrodite and the Derby on Teddington, receiving £2,000 in reward. His last major win again came for Zetland in the 1856 Doncaster Cup on Fandango. We are grateful to David Oldrey for his assistance with the catalogue entry. The paint layer is stable with a few light scuffs and scratches. There are areas of quite broad, loose retouching in the dress and sitter's face. The varnish is starting to bloom with areas of opaque hazing in the bottom half. There are a few small chips and losses to the frame.

He enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools in 1851 and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853. Marks became a member of the St John's Wood Clique in 1862. As his career progressed, he became increasingly interested in painting birds. Possibly his most famous painting is "A Select Committee" of 1891 which is now in the Walker Art Gallery. He was elected as a member of the Royal Academy following his painting "Convocation" which was exhibited in 1878. Most of his paintings of birds were watercolours, which he exhibited at the Old Watercolour Society or at the Fine Art Society. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds three of Marks' finished watercolour studies of birds and eleven sketches for larger paintings. Some of his works are exhibited in the Parrot House of Eaton Hall, Cheshire. Condition is fine.

DUKE & DUCHESS OF WINDSOR - The Marriage of Edward, Duke of Windsor to Mrs. Wallis Simpson, 3 June 1937, at the Chateau de Cande, Near Tours. "Group of 17 original photographs at the Wedding showing the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and their guests, together with scenes of the chapel (sic), the wedding breakfast and arrangements in the Chateau. All those present were presented with sets of photographs taken by Lady Alexandra Metcalfe, wife of the Duke's friend Fruity Metcalfe. This set was presented to Mr. W. Cunningham Graham, the British Consul at Nantes, who was present at the marriage. He is photographed alone on the steps of the Chateau." - this being the text of the original typed label when the collection was framed; the photos., now loose in cellophane sleeves, are with their original presentation box; each 9 x 14cms., b/w., & presumably taken immediately after the ceremony, include the library and music room (for the civil & religious ceremonies), several of the couple with their guests assembled on the Chateau's upper terrace, two of the wedding breakfast table (one with seated guests), and some showing the floral arrangements (by Constance Spry - her wedding gift to Wallis). Apart from a total boycott by the British Monarchy, very few of the other invited guests attended, those who did included - Charles & Fern Bedaux (hosts & the Chateau owners, the former later arrested for alleged Nazi collaboration, & committed suicide); Major ('Fruity') Metcalfe - the best man, & Lady Alexandra his wife - the unofficial photographer of the day & filmed in action by British Pathe Newsreel; Herman Rogers - who gave away the bride & his wife Katherine; the redoubtable 'Aunt Bessie' (Mrs. D. Buchanan Merryman, Wallis's aunt); as well as Walter Monckton - the Duke's confidant & close adviser; the Baron Eugene Rothschild with his wife, & Randolph Churchill. There were two ceremonies -the French civil one (in the library) followed by a 'marriage service' of the Church of England; for this a makeshift altar had been set up in the music room, the unauthorised ceremony being conducted by a C.of E. clergyman (Rev. Anderson Jardine). Five reporters were assigned to cover the event, almost outnumbering the guests; the official photographer being Cecil Beaton. This set is of the greatest rarity - not least because of the use of a 'rogue' camera at such an event; indeed until quite recent years, guests at most social events would have been happy with the pictures provided by an 'official' photographer. Lady Alexandra Metcalfe, who died in 1995, being the last survivor of the occasion. Illustrated
