A local restored 87 year old Austin 10 / Ten - Four Saloon Car in black coachwork with green details, registration no: VJ 5308, Chassis no: G 16398, Engine no: 1G 16659. She was first registered on the 1st June 1933 having had three owners in the same family since. She is understood to have been purchased by a Mr. David Arthur Jones of Ewyas Harold who left the vehicle to his niece's husband who had the vehicle restored in 1992 in readiness for his niece's daughter's wedding at Ewyas Harold church. The comprehensive works were carried out with a total disregard for cost, there being paid invoices on file that appear to total £10,338.04 with 763.5 labour hours referred to. The restoration; as would be anticipated, was a thorough body-off project, the invoices and a good number of colour photographs evidencing sand-blasting, engine work including new pistons, upholstery and trim restoration, bright-work, paint-work, etc., The owner sadly passed away some years ago and the vehicle passed to his wife, who has also now sadly left this life. Fascinatingly, with the car is a "Royal Air Force - Not Transferable Certificate No. 2609", stating that "The Undermentioned Mechanical Transport Vehicle is being used for duties essential to the Royal Air Force and is not to be requisitioned by any other Service or Department for other purposes". This bears a stamp of the "Observer Corps Western Region H.Q." and is signed by the Director of Equipment C.C. Ibbetson. There is a V5C present, also an old brown log book showing that she was taxed from 1962 to 1965 as well as several old tax disks including 1946 to 1952, 1963, 1965, 1993, 1994 and 1995. Other items present include an Austin Ten Drivers' Club members list (1994), an Available Austins parts catalogue (Apr. 1991), a Practical Motorist magazine dated March 1980 with an article: "Cars worth keeping - Austin 10", and a "The Times 1931 Cars of Today" annual publication with "96 Complete Reviews" the road tests within making extremely interesting reading. The Austin has never been left out and has started promptly every day to be moved in and out of the sale-room. She does not have a current M.O.T. and is exempt from such testing but old M.O.T. certificates dating from 1965, 1992 (2079 mls), 1993 (2132 mls) and 1994 (2176 mls); all carried out in Ewyas Harold show that there has only been very light usage and the odometer currently shows only 2184.6 miles. Once the vehicle's classification is changed to "Historic" road taxing will be required but will be free of charge under current legislation. The car has been laid up for several years but now; with a new 6 volt battery, she drives very nicely and; as she was not taxed or road insured, we trailered her to a local country residence where the long, sweeping driveway provided the atmospheric back-drop for the video that can be viewed on-line by those with an interest. Here arises the opportunity to purchase a much loved, character motor car with virtually everything done, which will keep up with modern day traffic being able to cruise comfortably at around 40 m.p.h. and with the welcome safety of four-wheel braking. ***N.B. THE BUYER'S PREMIUM ON THIS LOT WILL BE 10% + V.A.T. (TOTAL 12%). If purchased via the-saleroom.com an additional 5% + V.A.T. will be added (18% TOTAL)***
An Allis Chalmers model W.C. petrol/T.V.O. engined Row-Crop Farm Tractor Serial No. WC 127547 indicating a war-time build date of 1943 and the work carried out by this tractor certainly must have assisted with the war effort. It is highly likely that this is one of the many Allis Chalmers tractors that were re-assembled at Bacton Station yard in the Golden Valley only about 3 miles from the sale-room. They were crated from the U.S.A. into the ports of South Wales, then transported by rail, the branch into the Golden Valley commencing at Pontrilas station. Provenance: We are currently uncertain of the identity of the original owner but it is known that this tractor was owned by the late Mr. Smith of Cwmyoy; who owned a hill farm in the lower Llanthony valley, both he and his late wife were very loyal customers of our firm and entrusted us to sell their property when they retired and moved into Ewyas Harold. We understand that one of their sons; with a keen interest in farming, has in the last few days mentioned that the tractor was the first tractor in the Llanthony valley after the war in 1947. These tractors have a 201 cubic inch (3.3 litre) capacity, four-cylinder engine with a low 4.2:1 compression ratio ensuring that they would run on the variable quality fuel that was available at the time, they were long-lived being low-revving producing their rated horsepower (25.45) at only 1300 R.P.M. In the rigorous 1938 Nebraska test (No.303), such a tractor produced an impressive draw-bar pull of 1385 Kg. The tractor is running on new tyres all round with 12.4" x 28" rears and on the narrow front are a pair of 6.00" x 16", the turning circle is surprisingly tight; having a radius of only 8 feet, so these machines were capable of turning out at the end of a bout and turning in to the next bout without coming to rest. There are also independent hand-lever operated brakes (working very well) further enhancing the manoeuvring abilities, these having a novel, but simple, cam system on each lever providing parking braking. The tractor is fitted with a Lucas magneto with an impulse drive making starting with the starting handle relatively easy and quite safe from kick-back. A dynamo is fitted for tensioning the fan belt, an ammeter features on a small panel under the steering column but no battery is currently installed, however it would appear relatively straight-forward to up-grade what is present including fitting a self-starter, the bell-housing having a recess for such and the flywheel having a starter-ring. ***N.B. Myer Waterman was a Russian émigré who arrived in Britain at the turn of the 20th Century. Initially living in London, he served as an apprentice to a Hatton Garden jeweller before opening his own shop in Leeds and expanding his business. Born in 1920, Fanny Waterman was playing an upright piano by the age of four and by seventeen, she won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where she accumulated a succession of awards. Believed acquired by the owner's grandfather while stationed in the Far East during the second World War, thence by descent.Additional provenance information: The owner of the wine ewer has much military memorabilia showing his grandfather served in the Royal Army Corps during WW2 in Burma and India. The Royal Army Service Corps (R.A.S.C.) was a branch of the British Army which served on the Eastern Frontier of India and Burma. The Battle of Pakokku and Irrawaddy River operations were a series of battles fought between the British Indian Army and the Imperial Japanese Army and allied forces over the successful Allied Burma Campaign on the China Burma India Theatre during WW2. Possible reasons why the Chinese wine ewer was obtained: Client remembers Grandfather mentioning The Irrawaddy River . It was surrounded by temples and his grandfather obtained the item during the Burma CampaignDuring WW2 clients grandfather also developed a special friendship with a very wealthy Indian family who traded with China. Could the object have been a gift from them is what client suggests could be other reasonFootnote:An identical wine ewer can be found in the collection of the National Palace Museum in Beijing, inscribed with a Kangxi reign mark. The present lot compares very favourably to another example sold by Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 April 2010, lot 1804. The art of enamelling on copper was still relatively new to China when this piece was produced, having been brought over from Europe during the late 17th to early 18th Century. Gifts from visiting dignitaries and missionaries to the emperor Kangxi included enamels from Europe, such as those made at Limoges, which greatly impressed. So much so that Kangxi introduced the art to the palace workshops in circa 1700-1715. Clearly the art was mastered swiftly, as evidenced by this wine ewer and its twin in the National Palace Museum.Condition: Small sliver of enamel has flaked from the underside of the cover Very small flat enamel chip near the top corner on one side. He was named after the renowned late American trainer Bobby Frankel.Dubbed the world's greatest racehorse, Frankel's performance in the 2000 Guineas was described as 'one of the greatest displays on a British racecourse'. He earned nearly £3 million in prize money.Frankel is now retired to stud at Juddmonte Farms and charges a huge £175,000 a time stud fee. It is estimated that he is now worth £100 million, making him potentially the most expensive horse in history. Provenance: The vendor had a share in racehorse 'First Mohican' at Warren Place, Newmarket; the yard where Frankel was trained. They therefore knew trainer Sir Henry Cecil personally and the racing plate was gifted by Sir Henry, in person, to the vendors' daughter.Frankel's ex farrier has confirmed that during his time as farrier at Warren Place, he regularly used the Kerckhaert racing plates and indeed this plate is the style and make of the plates that he used to shoe Frankel. Frankel had unusually large feet and wore shoe sizes 7 and 7.5.A large selection of Frankel's racing plates were given to Sir Henry Cecil to be passed along to Juddmonte Farms, however it is uncertain as to what happened to these plates. It has been suggested that there are possibly now only two remaining racing plates of Frankel's that are not in the care of owner Prince Khalid Abdullah. It is thought that one sold at a charity auction and the other is the current lot for sale with Bonhams.Image of Frankel courtesy of:Author: Sjp22Title: Frankel goes to the post for the Juddmonte International at York, 2012https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frankel_at_York_2013.jpgPublic licence: https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Edwin Douglas (British, 1848-1914)Persimmon - the 1896 Derby Winner signed 'E Douglas' and dated 1897, oil on canvas29 x 39cm (11 7/16 x 15 3/8in).Footnotes:Persimmon is a well known 19th century British thoroughbred racehorse and sire owned by King Edward VII. In a racing career that lasted from 1895-1897, he ran nine times and won seven races including the St Ledger, the Ascot Gold Cup, the Eclipse Stakes and the 1896 Epsom Derby. Persimmon died of a fractured pelvis aged only 15 in 1908, however his taxidermied head is on display at the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket.Provenance:This picture was given to the vendor's great grandfather Edmund Walker who was the Sandringham Stud Manager to King Edward VII. Persimmon was raised by Edmund as a foal and then went on to be trained by Richard Marsh. There is still a statue of Persimmon at the front of Sandringham Stud with Edmund Walker's name on the plinth. This is one of two paintings, the other being held in the Royal Collection. It is thought that this painting was the original portrait of Persimmon given to Edward VII, however it is said King Edward did not like the way the straw was painted and therefore sent it back to be done again. The picture in the Royal Collection is thought to be the new and improved version, and this earlier version was gifted to Edmund Walker who was also a personal friend to the King. The next lot displays four of Persimmon's horseshoes displayed in a glazed case. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
