PRINCE PAUL TROUBETZKOY (1866-1938) A woman seated, signed and dated "Paul Troubetzkoy, Paris, 1906". Bronze, 46cm high Provenance: A European noble family Exhibited: Prima Esposizione Internazionale D'arte, Della Secessione, Roma 1913, No. 452 Prince Paul Troubetzkoy was born in Lake Maggiore, Italy, the son of an aristocratic Russian diplomat and an American opera singer. This gilded social status, coupled with his artistic talent meant Troubetzkoy was perfectly placed to capture the social elite at the turn of the nineteenth to twentieth centuries and indeed was a celebrity in his in own right. Troubetzkoy's forte was the society portrait, with particular emphasis on the seated figure. The present bronze can be compared to the well-known 'After the Ball', a portrait of Adelaide Auernheimer who along with her wealthy merchant husband Carlo Federico Aurnheimer became one of the main patrons of the Famiglia artistica milanese, an art gallery founded in 1873 for supporting young artists. Instead of modelling in clay, Troubetzkoy used a non-drying compound of clay and wax called plastilene, giving his finished works a great impression of immediacy. The present bronze is no exception. Troubetzkoy's fluid modelling technique can be seen here in the manipulation of the material, leaving clear thumb prints to be seen in the folds of drapery around the base.

A 1960 Ford Thames 100E 5 CWT van, registration number 8329 CR, chassis number 100E/864178, engine number 100E/86478, grey. Manufactured between 1954 and 1961, over 139,000 5 CWT vans rolled off of the production line and they became a go-to vehicle for both large and small business in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Having only had four registered keepers from new, this charming light commercial is presented in a restored condition but has retained its original engine, seats and gauges. The first owner, a Mr Derrick Edward Windsor from Hedge End Hampshire, registered the van on 7 July 1960, and would retain it until he sold it to Main Road Garage, Parson Drove, Wisbech, Kent. Subsequently the van was sold to Mr Anthony Charles Downing, who would in turn pass the light commercial to our vendor in 2013. It is believed that the van has covered a total of 65,000 miles over the past 57 years, with only a modest mileage being added to the odometer by our vendor during his ownership. With light commercials becoming ever more popular with collectors, this matching numbers example, which is offered for sale with its original registration number, should appeal to a wide market. Lot 35

A 1932 Austin 7 Super Accessories bodied Super Sports race car special, registration number VK 7167, red with black wings. Super Accessories were one of a number of companies supplying the bodies and other tuning parts to the special building market of the late 1950s. The special building market was at its highest during the 1950s with enthusiasts using both Austin and Ford chassis and engines to create two seater sports cars. This situation came about due to a lack of affordable sporting motoring from the main manufacturers and ready supply of pre-World War II chassis and engines. *** This competitive example has been campaigned by the vendor for the last four years in the Bert Hadley Memorial Championship (not the 750 Motor Club formula events, but it is eligible for this event).) in both hill climbs and sprints all over the UK as far apart as Barbon (not Barton) in the Lake District and Goodwood in Sussex winning many awards, the chassis and engine have been totally rebuilt by an Austin Seven specialist with the car being modified to accommodate the vendor who is 6' tall and 17 stone. The Austin 747cc engine has been completely rebuilt with modified competition pistons, new white metal bearings, new billet crankshaft, high compression head, big valves, double springs, modified camshaft, high capacity oil pump, lightened flywheel, Bosch ignition, SU 1¼" carburettor, four branch special exhaust and manifold, aluminium inlet manifold, four speed straight cut gearbox which was built by Vince Leek, uprated dual circuit hydraulic brakes, London wheels with radial tyres, aluminium fuel tank, electric manual cooling fan and uprated 12 volt electrics. The Austin is offered with a huge spares package to facilitate future running with a spare rebuilt engine, two four speed synchro gearboxes, two three speed gearboxes, two London wheels, *** no spare aluminium fuel tank ***, windscreen, and other spares. VK 7167 is a race winning competitive car which is ready to be used in the forthcoming season and with its supporting spares package offers the next owner a race ready car at an attractive guide price. Lot 37

A 1970 Morris Mini Cooper S Mk III, registration number EVG 115H, chassis number X-ADI/150923-A, engine number 12H/397F/348, red. Manufactured between March 1970 and June 1971, the Mk III Cooper S is one of the rarest of all Cooper derivatives, with only 1,570 being manufactured before production ceased. In line with the other Mk III models the body was revised with concealed door hinges, larger rear lights and new front grille. This matching numbers Cooper S is an early example having a build date of June 1970, just 3 months into production. As such it has some of the earlier Mk II's features including toggle dashboard switches and dashboard ignition switch. Having had only two registered keepers from new (both resided in Suffolk), the first owner registered the Mini on his personal registration 30 RHW and kept the car until 1978. On selling the Cooper to its second owner a Mr John Mills from Beccles, he retained his personal registration and the Mini was allocated the period registration EVG 115H. Our vendor purchased the car in 2015 direct from Mr Mills, removing it from Mr Mills's garage where it has been in store since approximately 1990. EVG 115H was then sent to Mini marque specialists, Coopers Garage, Mildenhall for a full restoration retaining as much originality as possible. The restoration took approximately 18 months and was completed in December 2016. During the restoration the shell was stripped back to bare metal and new Heritage panels were let in as necessary, retaining the original body numbers, before a full respray was carried out. The engine which sports a period Osseli special tuning cylinder head was fully rebuilt. The hydro-suspension and all running gear were also fully rebuilt and all bright work was restored to a similar high standard. The original interior has been sympathetically restored to retain as much originality as possible to retain some period charm. The Cooper sits on period Dunlop alloy wheels shod with Dunlop S/P tyres which certainly suit the sporting nature of the Mini. This rare and quite unique Mini is offered with a Heritage Certificate, verifying it's matching number status, a V5 verifying Mr Mills as the second owner, past MOTs and tax discs ***(but no original handbook)***. The vendor who resides in America has taken the reluctant decision to sell his Mini due to a change in plans which now means that he will not be returning to Britain and he does not wish to export the car to the States. This fully restored Cooper S now offers an opportunity to purchase a rare Cooper without all of the inconvenience associated with managing a full restoration. V5, no MOT See illustrations

A 1934 Austin 10/4 Colwyn Cabriolet, registration number RV 4807, chassis number G33986, engine number IG 34094, black with brown accents. Introduced in 1934 to complement the family of 10/4 Austins, the Colwyn was described by The Motor Magazine as a neat occasional four seat Cabriolet, with folding three position hood and rear luggage compartment. Nicknamed Bonnie, this charming Colwyn Cabriolet was originally purchased for £178.00 by a Mr A D Smith, the owner of Farlington Garage, near Portsmouth. On delivery, the odometer had a delivery mileage of 13 miles and five gallons of Shell petrol was put into the tank for just over seven shillings. Bonnie was mainly used for a weekly wage collection and touring holidays, she was subsequently fitted with a tow bar to tow a caravan or trailer and visited amongst other places, Ripon in Yorkshire, Ffestiniog, Snowdonia and Cornwall by way of the infamous Porlock Hill. All these journeys are carefully documented from 12 April 1934 until September 1949, noting average speed and MPG, stops undertaken and time, and whether or not the caravan or trailer accompanied the Austin. The Austin Sports Ace disc wheel trims and spare wheel cover, and all running repairs were recorded during Mr Smith's ownership. When Mr Smith decided to part with the Austin in 1968, 65,182 miles had been covered. Bonnie was then purchased by a Mr John Gates for £75.00, he would then use the car regularly for the next five years before passing custodianship onto his daughter and son-in-law, who enjoyed the Austin on numerous road rallies and runs. A Mr John Harrison was then the next owner who purchased the car for £850.00 in January 1977. In 1982, Bonnie was taken off the road for 16 years for a comprehensive restoration. Mr Harrison restored the car retaining as much originality as possible and carefully used refurbished original parts and repairing the leather interior. The hood was subsequently replaced, but all carpets and running board rubbers were retained. When the restoration was completed, the Austin toured France twice and has won six first place awards at the Austin Ten Drivers Club national rally. Ownership changed hands again in 2015 and was purchased by our vendor in 2016. RV 4807 is presented in excellent condition and is not only an extremely rare model but is offered with a comprehensive and most revealing history detailing its life with the various owners, including six winners rosettes from the ATDC national rally, a Motorine logbook with the aforementioned records dating from 13-3-1934 until 1968 (including petrol consumption at 41 mpg), oil consumption, oil changes, tyre records, chassis lubrication and a schedule of repairs. The history file also contains images of the restoration and photographs of the Austin at various locations with the caravan, handbooks, an original sales leaflet, the warranty, spare parts lists, a Castrol lubrication chart, numerous invoices, previous MOTs, RF60 and RF60A logbooks. With its continuous history from new and being presented in excellent condition this rare Austin is every bit as charming as it was when new, and will be cherished by its new custodian and will be ready to be shown or enjoyed as one wishes. William Horace de Vere Cole [1881-1936] was an eccentric prankster and poet born in Ireland. As an undergraduate at Cambridge University, Cole posed as a Sultan who was visiting London, and made an 'official' visit to his own college accompanied by his friend Adrian Stephen, the brother of Virginia Woolf.Following the Sultan of Zanzibar prank, Cole, with his mane of hair and bristling moustache, who was often confused with British prime minister Ramsay Macdonald, executed a series of bold jokes and escapades principally aimed at deflating pompous figures of authority. His targets included members of parliament, city businessmen and naval officers. On one occasion he directed a group of like-minded friends dressed as workmen, as they dug a trench across Piccadilly.

Harry Jones Thaddeus (1860-1929) RHA A Sheep Pen oil on board signed 'H.J. THADDEUS' and dated 1894 lower left of centre 63½ x 76½cm (25 x 30in) Gorry Gallery, Dublin; Private Collection Though the tone and style of this painting was informed by French rustic naturalism, its subject is more likely to be English. Thaddeus travelled extensively throughout his career, but from the mid-1880s to 1904 was based in London and conducted much of his business in its vicinity. The character and russet tiles of the farm building on the right of the picture are certainly consistent with southern English vernacular architecture. The calm simplicity of the subject - farm workers discussing stock - provides a gentle contrast to the agrarian subjects for which Thaddeus is better known. His most celebrated works include depictions of peasants in moments of heightened emotion or peril (The Wounded Poacher (1880/1, NGI); An Irish Eviction, Co. Galway (1890, private collection; The Poachers (1890's, private collection)). Animals are extremely unusual in Thaddeus's work. However, on the evidence of this painting, and a portrait of the artist's son Freddie with the family dog (c.1904, private collection), a tender and intimate record never intended for public scrutiny, Thaddeus was both comfortable and competent in painting such subject matter. This picture invites comparison with the work of Joseph Malachy Kavanagh (1856-1918), who specialised in pastoral subjects and, like his compatriot and close contemporary Thaddeus, had spent time painting in Brittany in the early 1880's. Its peculiarities notwithstanding, the painting bears many of the technical hallmarks of the artist's work. The palette, particularly the distinctive greens, and the orange-brown of the farm building's roof, recur throughout Thaddeus's oeuvre. The liberal use of dark outlines around the linear detail, meanwhile, is also characteristic of Thaddeus's paintings in many genres, as is the assuredness of the drawing. For several decades, Thaddeus enjoyed considerable success and critical acclaim as a society portrait painter, befriending and serving many members of Europe's royal, aristocratic and political elite. Alternative subjects, like this example, provided him with welcome respite from the exacting demands of formal portraiture, and he displayed on many occasions an inclination to experiment. In this instance, the composition is relatively unorthodox - the horizontal and dramatically foreshortened sheep pen occupies most of the middle ground - and does not adhere to strict academic models. The picture is also larger than one might expect for such an understated subject. The summary description of the foreground and background detail suggest that the painting is unfinished. However, the tonal balance of the work and the rendering of the elements in the middle ground (and an old cart on the left) indicate that the painting is at least very close to its final state. Liam O'Neill (b.1954) Turning for Home oil on canvas signed lower right 76¼ x 102cm (30 x 40in) Green Lane Gallery, Dingle (label verso); Private Collection Liam O'Neill was born in West Kerry in 1954 and is among Ireland's most talented contemporary artists. He is a self taught painter who credits his motivation and inspiration from his love of the west coast. His paintings recapture images of harbours, horse fairs, landscapes, fishermen, bog and meadow scenes. The animated strokes of bright colour, which are spontaneously applied in a loose expressionistic manner using a palette knife, emphasise the passionate freedom of the artist's style. O'Neill has exhibited widely over the past 20 years including the Royal Hibernian Academy, Oireachtas and the National Portrait Exhibition.

Daniel O'Neill (1920-1974) Coastal Scene, Co Down (1973) oil on board signed lower right With a photostat copy of a newspaper obituary for O'Neill from the Irish Times, Tuesday 12th March 1974, pasted on reverse. 15 x 22cm (6 x 9in) Whytes, Dublin, 9th October 2001, Lot 38; Private Collection Daniel O'Neill was a Romantic painter born in Belfast in 1920. He was largely self-taught, although he briefly attended Belfast College of Art life classes, before working with and studying under fellow Belfast artist Sidney Smith. He quickly developed an expressionist technique, and strong romanticism, with imagery, often full of pathos, evoking the themes of love, life and death. O'Neill's first exhibition was at the Mol Gallery in Belfast in 1941. In 1946 he sold 21 pictures out of 23 at an exhibition at the Waddington Galleries in Dublin and from then on exhibited regularly. In 1949 he visited Paris and was influenced by Georges Rouault, Maurice de Vlaminck and Maurice Utrillo. In 1951 his work was shown in the Tooth Galleries, London and he also exhibited there with Colin Middleton in 1954. In the 1950s, O'Neill moved from Belfast to Conlig, County Down, where there was a small artist's colony that also included George Campbell and Gerard Dillon. Along with Colin Middleton, Gerard Dillon and George Campbell he was one of a group of artists who respected each other's work and kept in touch over the course of their careers. He lived in London from 1958 to 1971. During his lifetime, O'Neill's works were primarily exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy. More recently, some of his paintings were shown at the Irish Museum of Modern Art as part of a 2005 exhibition of Northern Irish artists. His work is represented in many collections including the Ulster Museum, Queen's University Belfast and the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, Dublin.
