1996 Bentley Continental R CoupéRegistration no. M800 MESChassis no. SCBZB15C3TCH53086Odometer Reading: 46,500MoT Expiry: 25/09/2020*A true grand tourer*Low mileage*Very good service historyRegarded by many as the last true Bentley the Continental R coupe spawned several derivatives including a short-wheelbase coupe, a convertible and even a sedanca, but many prefer the original version, which was launched at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show. At the time it was the world's most expensive production car and among its buyers was politician and diarist Alan Clark, who heaped praise on the car's power. This example is said to have very good bodywork, paint and trim, the 'Silica' hue being a more unusual yet eminently suitable colour choice. The interior is also described as very good, the fawn-coloured seat facings showing little signs of wear, while the dashboard, carpets, headlining and door cards are equally good. The engine is described as excellent for starting, running and for presentation and the running gear, including gearbox, brakes and suspension, are also given a very good ranking, as are the electrics. The car's service history is reported to be excellent. To Schedule a video condition report for this lot please click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 85/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1904 Crestmobile Type D Rear Entrance TonneauReg. no. BS 8303Chassis no. 666‘$750 dollars for two persons $850 dollars for four persons’.So says the advert for the 1904 8 HP Crestmobile. Started in 1901 the Crest Manufacturing Company was based in Cambridge Massachusetts USA and began by making engines and other components. In 1901 they launched a very simple 2 HP air cooled single cylinder runabout. The Model A followed later in the year; the Model B was powered by a 3.5 HP engine and the Model C by a 5 HP engine. The Model D was fitted with an 8 HP engine and was introduced in 1904. In 1905 the Company was absorbed into the Alden-Sampson Co who continued to sell the left over Crestmobiles into 1906.Little is known of the history of the car offered in the sale before it was imported in running order into the UK from the USA. A Certificate of Title in the file gives the last known American owner as a Mr David Schaik residing in PA. Imported into the UK around 1999 the car was registered BS 8303 and in early 2000 the car was presented to the VCC dating committee; a date of manufacture of 1904 is confirmed on certificate number 2315. A number if invoices are on file detailing work carried out by respected engineer Nigel Parrott and Henal Engineering which included rebuilding the gearbox and mending transmission brakes. The Crestmobile Model D is fitted with a single cylinder air cooled engine, rated at 8 HP, with mechanical inlet valves fed with drip feed lubrication. 1972 MG B GT Costello Mk. I – a genuine low mileage exampleReg. no. PJM 626LChassis no. GHD5280885GEngine no. 2M6550361-672From 1970 to 1974, successful racing driver and engineer Ken Costello converted around 225 MG Bs to V8 form, in which guise they could out-run a Jaguar E-Type to 100mph and reach almost 140mph. The start date of 1970 means, of course, that Costello was producing V8 Bs for three years before British Leyland themselves decided to do the same – BL were likely inspired to act by the success of Costello’s conversions. Like the later factory cars, Costello’s conversions used the excellent 3.5 litre Buick-derived V8 that Rover had put to good use in the P5 and P6. However, whereas the factory-installed engines were detuned to 137bhp, Costello cars had 180bhp, leading to those highly impressive performance figures. MK1 Costello V8s are easily spotted due to their distinctive bulging fibreglass bonnet and black aluminium ‘egg-box’ grille, which give the cars a much more muscular look than a standard B – appropriate, given the nature of the car. Costello stopped the conversions in 1974, both due to the international oil crisis putting off potential customers, and the competition from the cheaper (albeit slower) factory cars. Of the 35 roadsters and 190 GTs made, around 60 are thought to survive today, all highly collectible. This car was first owned by the owner of a British Leyland dealership in Windemere and was sent by him to the Costello works for conversion. It was also rust-proofed with ‘Endrust’, which has helped ensure its long-term preservation. In 1975, it was sold to a British Army officer, who would keep the car for the next 24 years. During his ownership, the car spent some time in Germany, where it is reported to have performed well on its regular Autobahn runs, and also took part in some competitive time-trials. In 1999, the car was purchased by Alistair Rew, the financial director of Red Bull Racing; it was then thoroughly recommissioned, work including an engine rebuild. Over the next 17 years, it was used sparingly, covering 6,000 miles. The current owners purchased the car in 2016. They have fitted a new leather interior in the original blue colour, and the car has been wax-oyled. Said to be a real pleasure to drive with masses of power, this rare car comes with an extensive history file, including nearly every MOT, a heritage certificate and a certificate of authenticity from Ken Costello. It also comes with a V5C.
1901 Renault 450cc Series E 4-seater TonneauReg. no. A 2743Chassis no. 023Engine no. 4749VCC Dating Certificate 1217Louis Renault built his first car in 1898 utilising a primitive tubular chassis and a propriety De Dion engine. Having secured substantial financial backing production soon started at Billancourt with the 1 3/4 and 3 hp cars. To publicise the cars Louis and his brother Marcel saw the benefits from active participation in early motor races. The Renault voiturettes were highly thought of, with Louis Renault leading a team of four cars in the 1901 Paris-Bordeaux Race. Louis won the voiturette class completing the epic race in a time of 9 hours and 31 minutes with Marcel second and the other two Renaults third and fourth. This early London to Brighton eligible car is unusual in that its complete history is known. It was supplied new by the sole agents for Renault Freres and Mors cars Roadway Autocar Co Ltd in London to Captain Basil Emery of Bulford Wilts and Hunstanton Norfolk. Captain Emery was a decorated career Army Officer and there is a photo on file taken c.1907 of him and his fiancé taken outside Ely Cathedral. The car was acquired in 1920 by a Mr Barnes, a chimney sweep from Reading who used it in his business. It was then acquired in 1927 by the well-known coachbuilders and motor dealers Vincents of Reading, and was in their custody until 1975. There then followed five owners until the current vendors late father acquired the car in 2006.This 1901 example is powered by a 4.5 single cylinder water cooled De Dion engine with automatic inlet and mechanical exhaust valves and features the traditional side radiators characteristic of Renault at that time. The car is running on the correct trembler ignition system and under the bonnet is fitted the De Dion type coil. The gearbox has three forward and a reverse gear. Now fitted with a four, as opposed to the original two, seat bodywork the front carries two plates cast with E Vicart et Fils of Levallois (Seine). The coachwork is presented in green with coach lining and red button upholstery and is fitted with brass sidelamps, an oil rear lamp and a brass horn.As well as being a proven early starter for the London to Brighton Run this historic veteran is also eligible for all VVC rallies including a number of popular single and twin events as well as Renault Frères events in France and is easily transportable. The car is offered with a current V5, an old style buff logbook, a VCC dating certificate and an extensive history file. Usefully there are also notes on the starting procedure as well as suggested driving technique both backwards and forwards.
1912 De Dion Model DHReg. no. BF 9125Chassis no. 34Engine no. 8897cRated: 12 HPAt the end of the 19th century the Comte De Dion, who had been manufacturing steam vehicles for some 20 years, entered into partnership with Mr Bouton. The secret of their success was to design a high revving engine using a cam which allowed the rapid opening and closing of the electrical circuit. The early engines were air cooled revving to 1800 rpm and were fitted to trikes. The now famous Vis a Vis, of which many examples can be seen on the annual London to Brighton Run, was introduced in 1900. By 1902 De Dion claimed to have more than 30,000 of their engines in use around the world. The first twin cylinder was introduced in 1903 and by 1906 the vehicles were becoming more conventional with a foot operate clutch and radiator in front of the bonnet, replacing the scuttle mounted one seen previously. By 1909 The Type U (30hp) 4-cylinder had been introduced and then in 1910 the world's first series produced 6107cc V8 engine was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show. The DH model offered here was imported from New Zealand in late 2018 by the vendor’s late father and is offered with all taxes and duties paid. A letter on file from the VCC of GB to aid registration confirms the date as 1912 although it has not been officially dated by them. There is also a dating form from the VCC of NZ dated 1956.Finished with a striking red chassis and body the vehicle is in good condition. A wealth of brass is fitted for the polisher including headlamps and side lights and a magnificent brass horn. The engine is a mono-block 4-cylinder of 1642cc (12hp) and ignition is by Bosch magneto. Whilst not the fastest of cars De Dions are a historic make from the pioneers of the early days of motoring, with reliable performance and this one would be a welcome addition to the ranks of the VCC subject to an Events Passport or Dating Certificate. In addition, there is a very active De Dion Bouton Club both in the UK and in its home country of France. Th car is offered for sale with a current V5C and some paperwork and old articles from New Zealand.
1927 Daimler 20/70 TourerReg. no. YT 3126Chassis no. Q120/7028708Engine no. LQ20/71690In the 1920s Daimler, along with its future BSA stablemate Lanchester, retained a special position in the British car industry – these cars appealed to those who wanted the quality, refinement and luxury of a Rolls-Royce, but without the ‘Hollywood’ associations that the Derby firm’s cars had started to acquire. Hence Daimlers remained a particular favourite of the British royal family, along with other elements of society who wanted to travel in the best vehicle possible without being seen as too ‘flash’. Such models as the 20/70 epitomised this appeal; they were large, stately and finely crafted, but imposing in a restrained manner – they could certainly not be accused of being flashy or vulgar. Daimler knew its market well - that had stood them in good stead for a long time and would continue to do so.This 1927 20/70 is a fairly rare open car – many Daimlers were formal enclosed limousines or landaulets. In the ownership of one family from 1966 to 2006, it was subject to extensive restoration work in the 1980s, which included the replacement of the original sleeve-valve engine with a 1934 2.7 litre overhead-valve engine from a later 20hp Daimler. This should offer easier maintenance plus improved performance, and was restored in 2012-14, including a new camshaft. It has only done 1700 miles since this photographically documented work. The original engine comes with the car but requires refurbishment. In all other areas the car remains in good condition, and it comes with some bills and a V5c.

Keen to capitalise on the demand for luxury small cars, BMC wasted no time in producing a Vanden Plas version of its popular 1100.In recent years this car has formed part of a large collection and as such has received little or no use and an element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again. Your inspection pre-sale is welcomed and encouraged to appreciate the potential of this rarely offered motor car which is strictly sold as seen. The Princess 1100's creation, however, was down to Fred Connolly, owner of the famous leather company of the same name who requested that an ADO16 1100 be given the full luxury treatment for his own personal use. When BMC management saw the result, they were so impressed, they made their own versionThe interior was fitted with a full-width Walnut-veneered facia with recessed instruments, Walnut door cappings and picnic tables fitted to the rear of each front seat. West of England cloth was used for the roof lining, best Wilton carpet covered the floor and Connolly leather was used for all seat wearing surfaces. RTV The Beatles - four signatures on the reverse of a B.O.A.C. Rolls-Royce 707 Jetliner postcard comprising Paul McCartney, Jimmie Nicol, John Lennon and George Harrison. In June 1964 The Beatles were about to embark on a tour which would take in Denmark, The Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand before returning to the UK but a few days before the start of the tour Ringo was rushed to hospital with severe tonsillitis and needed an immediate operation. Cancellation of the tour at this late stage would have caused a great deal of problems so Brian Epstein looked for, found and auditioned another drummer, Jimmie Nicol. Although George Harrison was not happy with the arrangement the tour proceeded with Nicol as their drummer. As soon as Ringo recovered he flew to Melbourne and joined The Beatles who then went on to finish the tour. Nicol only played eight shows and was a Beatle for just thirteen days as he was flown home the very next day after Ringo's arrival in Melbourne. Provenance: the signatures were given to the BOAC pilot who flew the Beatles on the tour. He then passed them on to his friend the Mayor of Chipping Norton, where he lived, and the vendor is the widow of the Mayor. - Condition Report

SANDERSON, William: 'A Compleat History of The Life and Raigne of King Charles From His Cradle to his Grave. Collected and Written by William Sanderson Esq./London, Printed for Humphrey Moseley, Richard Tomlins and George Sawbridge, 1658'. Sanderson concludes that after Charles' death: 'The world was busied with epitaphs...and there were those who have been passionately disposed to parallel his sufferings with the holy Jesus, but we forbear to censure them, or to say so much. Only we may aver that he was a King, whose reign and death makes as full and perfect a story of goodness and glory as earth could suffer, and whose Christian virtues deserve as faithful a Register as Earth can keep, but [Reader] not to overwhelm thee in a deluge of sorrow, as I am drowned in tears, I conclude'.Provenance: Bookplate for William Murray of Touchadam [possibly the William Murray of Touchadam and Polmaise/1679-1758].For the events surrounding the critical year of printing for this biography, see Antonia Fraser's 'King Charles II' [Weidenfeld and Nicolson/1979]. 1658 was a significant moment for William Sanderson to produce this work; Oliver Cromwell died on September 3rd that year, leaving England without a decisive, constitutional direction. It was a void that could not be easily adjusted, following the Commonwealth years and no obvious solution was apparent, as to whom or what should be offered the mantle of authority. Parliament had been dissolved that year with Cromwell at odds with a government that he had painstakingly created.Although Cromwell's son, Richard [1626-1712], was to call a Parliament in January 1659, he was not inclined to attempt a continuation of his father's legacy, opting for the obscurity of his home in Hursley, near Winchester. He was to live into the reign of Queen Anne, a life span that would witness much further drama and intrigue for the Stuart succession. This biography therefore joined a complicated debate that would ultimately result in Charles II's return to London on May 29th 1660. How Cromwell would have seen the Restoration, cannot be known; however the Commonwealth had witnessed new developments in the interpretation of religion and politics, creating new forces that had to be given consideration if the return of Stuart rule was to flourish.

dating: 20th Century provenance: Germany, In silver, partially gilded and enameled. Central part covered with red velvet and decorated with twenty army eagles and twenty iron crosses, enameled in black. Octagonal ends decorated with rings and oak branches, upper part with inscription 'Der Fuhrer del Generalfeldmarschall von Kluge', an army eagle at the peak. Lower part with inscription 'Zum Freiheitskampf des Grossdeutschen Volkes 19 Juli 1940'. Base with enameled iron cross. In its original, wooden case, covered with black leather, lined with white velvet inside, cover with white silk with gold stamp 'H. J. Wilm BERLIN' with its trademark. Field Marshal Günther von Kluge (30 October 1882 - 19 August 1944) comes from a family of the Prussian military aristocracy. He served as a junior officer in the First World War and continued his brilliant military career in the Wehrmacht during the Second World War. He is evident in the first victorious campaigns in Poland and the West in command of the Fourth Army. The brave general often shared frontline actions with his soldiers. His tough temper often put him in sharp contrast to generals under his command such as Guderian and Rommel. Some remarks and criticisms against Hitler and National Socialism convinced Hitler to replace him by calling him back to headquarters, but von Kluge, who was involved in the plot against Hitler in 1944, preferred to take his own life.Seen the good quality and execution, this is probably a second baton ordered by von Kluge from the company 'H. J. Wilm' in Berlin. The original is located in the Deutschen Panzermuseum in Münster / Germany. length 50 cm.
