Pink Floyd - The Wall - Two Movie Promotional Books. The two spiral bound books of largely unseen design art for the aborted, original concept for the film were produced in limited numbers as a selling tool to potential investors, and few are believed to still exist. The two books follow a similar format with subtle differences. The books are a visual aid to understanding both how the film will be made and how it will look when finished. Printed in full colour on 16 x 12 inches card stock and spiral bound. A rare and intriguing snapshot of a work (then) in progress. Background - The 1982 film version of Pink Floyd's seminal concept album was fraught with difficulties during it's production. The film's original format was to be comprised of footage of the band playing live at Earls Court in London, with animation by political cartoonist and illustrator Gerald Scarfe spread throughout the film. Director Alan Parker found the concert footage to be unusable, and Floyd bassist/songwriter/screenwriter Roger Waters -- who had envisioned himself as the star of the show -- wasn't suitable as an actor. Replacing him with Boomtown Rats front man Bob Geldof, Parker was able to attract the attention of MGM and ultimately complete the film. (Parker and Waters butted heads the whole time, the former calling it the most expensive student film ever made and the latter ultimately disowning it.)Provenance: This lot has been consigned by Oxfam and all proceeds go to the charity. .

FRENCH MARQUETRY AND GILTMETAL TABLE BY MAISON GIROUXCIRCA 1880 the circular top inlaid with hardwoods depicting a cockerel, dragonfly and flowering trees, against an ivory ground, signed 'FD Bte' for Ferdinand Duvinage, in a leaf cast frame raised on a fluted column with a vasiform base and stiff leaf cast tripod legs ending in toupie feet53cm diameter, 73cm highNote: This striking use of marquetry was executed in a style exclusive to the luxury Parisian firm Maison Alphonse Giroux. Founded in 1799 by Francis Simon Alphonse Giroux, the establishment began as a shop on Rue du Coq Saint-Honoré dealing in artist supplies, but later progressed to the manufacturing of luxury furniture and goods in the early nineteenth century. The firm was taken over by Ferdinand Duvinage in 1867 who developed the marquetry technique for which the company became famous. On his death in 1874, his widow Madame Rosalie Duvinage became the sole owner. Described as 'a mosaic combined with metal partitioning for artistic objects and furnishing', the innovative approach to marquetry, seen on this table, was patented by Rosalie in 1877. The patent can be clearly recognised on Maison Giroux pieces by the monogram 'FD/Bte' which was discreetly engraved onto the surfaces of their products. Using ivory as a background, an intricate combination of both traditional wood marquetry and copper or bronze threads are positioned onto the item to create the maker's desired pattern or image. Influenced by Chinese and Japanese art, birds decorated amongst flowering foliage are common motifs adopted by the firm. After exhibiting at the Exposition Universelle in 1878, this particular approach to marquetry furniture quickly became the most distinguishable style that the Maison Giroux firm ever produced. Please be aware that this lot contains material which may be subject to import/export restrictions, especially outside the EU, due to CITES regulations. Please note it is the buyer's sole responsibility to obtain any relevant export or import licence. For more information visit http://www.defra.gov.uk/ahvla-en/imports-exports/cites/

9th-10th century AD. See Vang Petersen, P. Valkyrier og Bersærker. Mytologien i Smykkekunsten, in Madsen, P.K. (ed.) Danefæ. Skatte fra den Danske Muld, Copenhagen, 2010; Garde?a, L. ‘Warrior-women’ in Viking Age Scandinavia, A preliminary archaeological study in Analecta Archaeologica Ressoviensia, vol.8, Rzeszów, 2013. 8.12 grams, 41mm (1 1/2"). Property of a Cambridgeshire, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market in the 1980s. This pendant resembles a find from Galgebakke, Denmark, a silver figure holding a short sword and clutching a shield by the boss (Vang Petersen, item 4"). The Galgebakke figure is identified as female on the basis of the elaborate crested hairstyle, and an ankle-length dress with tiny feet beneath. The interpretation usually offered for this figure is that of a skjoldmø or 'shield-maiden', a female who takes up arms in pursuit of vengeance such as the legendary Hervor in Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks. Scholars used to interpret these armed females as valkyries - hand maidens of the god Oðinn - but the idea has been challenged recently (Garde?a, 2013"). Very fine condition. Rare.

The Montagu family home at Boughton House, between Weekley and Geddington in Northamptonshire is very close to the findspot. Montagu was the son of Sir Edward Montagu and his wife Elizabeth Harrington, daughter of James Harington of Exton? of? Rutland. He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in about 1574 and graduated ?in 1579. He was a student of the Middle Temple in 1580? and succeeded his father in 1602. In 1584, he was elected Member of Parliament for Bere Alston, in 1597 for Tavistock and in 1601 for Brackley. He was created Knight of the Bath by James I at his coronation on 25 July 1603. He was appointed High Sheriff of Northamptonshire for 1595?-1596. In 1604 Montagu was elected MP for Northamptonshire. On 9 February 1605, with other gentlemen of Northamptonshire, he presented a petition to the king in favour of those ministers in the county who refused subscription. The petitioners were warned that their combination in a cause against which the king had shewed his mislike? '?…was little less than treason.?'? Montagu was for the time deprived of his lieutenancy and justiceship of the peace in the county. He was one of the key founders of what is known today as Guy Fawkes Night through his sponsorship, in Parliament, of the Observance of 5th November Act 1605. He was re-elected MP for Northamptonshire in 1614 for the Addled Parliament and in 1621. He was created Baron Montagu of Boughton on 29 June 1621. Montagu supported King Charles I in the Civil War which led to his arrest in August 1642. Lot 246

6th-7th century AD. A lead plaque with monogram impression to both sides, with Greek letters; and a ceramic pilgrim token, stamped to one side with bearded figure of a St Simeon Stylites, standing atop a column, robed wearing a pointed hat, flanked by two angles, ladder to the bottom right, incense burner to the bottom left. Cf. British Museum, accession number: 1991,0601.1 for a token with similar design. 23.3 grams total, 22-25.5mm (1"). Property of a Mayfair lady; formerly in an important London collection formed since 1965. The term Stylite or 'pillar-saint' refers to a type of Christian ascetic who lived on top of a column. The first of these was the Saint Simeon Stylites the Elder, possibly represented here, who took up residence atop a column in Syria in AD 423. The practice was adopted across the eastern empire, documented in Greece and the Middle East, but never spread to the western empire. From their column-residence, a stylite would pray, preach, fast and conduct pastoral work. Disciples would bring sustenance with the help of a ladder, depicted on this token. [2] Fine condition.

Lot 386

2nd-4th century AD. A substantial youthful and benign grey schist statue of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara on a plinth, standing erect wearing a dhoti and sandals with swags of beads and braided ornaments to the neck, sanghati mantle draped elegantly over the left shoulder; the face with pointed moustache, urna to the brow, copious hair bound with a beaded headband; the right hand raised palm-outwards in the mudhra gesture of reassurance, the left hand holding a censer; the plinth with segmented panels; mounted on a custom-made stand. 72.0 kg, 120cm (47 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; previously with central London gallery; imported from the USA in the early 1970s; formerly with Mahboubian Gallery, New York since the late 1960s; accompanied by a original early 1970s black and white photograph. The figure probably represents the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who is said to embody the compassion of all Buddhas or 'awakened beings'. According to some early Buddhist teachings drawing on pre-existing Hindu tradition, the sun and moon are said to be born from Avalokiteśvara's eyes, Shiva from his brow, Brahma from his shoulders, Narayana from his heart, Saraswati from his teeth, the winds from his mouth, the earth from his feet, and the sky from his stomach. In this way, he has the role of 'primordial being' also seen in the stories of Vedic Yama and Avestan Yima, who are instrumental in creating the world from the remains of a single being. Lot 511

9th-11th century AD. A penannular neck-ring formed from a square-section bar, twisted about its own axis to produce a spiral effect; tapering round-section terminals. 141 grams, 16.8cm (6 1/2"). Property of a North London gentleman; formerly in a Russian collection in the 1980s. Torcs or neck-rings, arm-rings and bracelets fashioned from gold are an ancient tradition in northern Europe, used to display both wealth and status. The torc was especially prized since it could be used as a prominent and highly visible means of displaying religious affiliation to the god of magic and warfare, Odin, who features in a myth where he sacrifices himself by hanging in order to gain access to the power of the runic script and the magic it contains. Devotees of the god, who included many of the leading kings, earls and chief warriors of Scandinavia, used the symbolism of the twisted torc as an emblem of the noose and thus of access to the god's powers of inspiration and knowledge of esoteric wisdom. Very fine condition. Rare.
