I, 162, 1; Pollard 492 = Kress 426; Bernhart 163.2), old cast, about extremely fine with brown patina. The cast is extremely close to the example in the Lanna collection (1911), no. 626.

Alfonso Ruspagiari (1521-1576), Unidentified Woman and Her Admirer, uniface lead medal, sculptural female bust right, her hair elaborately dressed and coiled, wearing earring and pendant necklace, her breasts exposed and with drapery tied around her midriff and on her left shoulder; her portrait set within oval frame from the right edge of which a male head looks towards her; signed on the truncated right arm, A R, 69mm (Attwood 646; Arm. I, 216,5; Pollard 519 = Kress 450; Scher, Currency of Fame, 73 and p. 146), pierced, a very fine contemporary cast, very rare. The medal has been much discussed, in particular by Mary Levkoff in Currency of Fame (pp. 187-7), who described it as “one of the most compellingly romantic images in medallic art from the Renaissance”. The principal subject represents a sculptural image of womanhood admired by a male head emerging from the scrollwork of the oval frame, perhaps an allusion to Ovid’s story of Pygmalion, the sculptor who fell in love with the statue of a woman that he had created. Alternatively, if in fact the second head is female then the medal portrays youth and old age and becomes an illustration of Vanitas.

Lot 131

He succeeded as the third viscount on the death of his brother in 1726. He was a military man and aide-de-camp to Marlborough. At the Battle of Ramillies he is said to have rescued Marlborough at a critical moment by giving up his own horse to the Duke who had been momentarily unseated. He rose to become commander-in-chief, Ireland in 1751 and was promoted to field marshall in 1757, the year before his death.

Timbro 'bibliothek schloss schonborn' al verso dell'ultima carta.I: Prima edizione in italiano di quello che è considerato il secondo libro sull'occhio: "the second earliest printed work on the eye, Grassus's De oculis (1474) being the first" (Becker). "The purpose of the De oculo morali is purely ethical but it contains a description of the eye, together with a brief account of eye diseases and their treatment" (Sarton II, 1029). I BMC V 419. IGI 7384. Essling 892. Sander 3757. Klebs 243. Stamp 'bibliothek schloss schonborn' on the verso of the last leaf. I: First edition into Italian of "the second earliest printed work on the eye, Grassus's De oculis (1474) being the first" (Becker). The work appeared first in Latin in 1476, and is variously attributed to Petrus de Lacepiera, whose name is mentioned at the colophon, Johannes de Peckham or Petrus Lemovicensis (Pierre de Limoges). The version into Italian was edited by Fra Teophilo Romano. "The purpose of the De oculo morali is purely ethical but it contains a description of the eye, together with a brief account of eye diseases and their treatment" (Sarton II, 1029). II: Third edition of the translation into Italian vernacular, printed on 12 october 1492, day of discovering of America, of this famous spiritual treatise on monastic life entitled Klimax tou Paradeisou or The Ladder of Divine Ascent, composed in the 7th century by St. John Climacus. This edition follows the first edition of 1478 (Torrebelvicino, Giovanni Leonardo Longo) and the second one of 1491 (Venezia, Matteo Capcasa). The translation into Italian was made by the fifteenth-century Augustinian monk Gentile from Foligno, who relied his work on the Latin translation by Angelo Clareno from Cingoli. I: BMC V 419. (A. Manganaro. Four woodcut decorated six-line initials, the ones on fols. a2r and g1r illuminated in light blue and yellow. Numerous smaller Lombard initials. I: Second edition, the first available, of the poetical work by Domenico Farina from Sora (1460-1528), and dedicated to his friend and patron Marcantonio Sabellico. Farina entered in 1478 the Roman Academy (Accademia Romana) founded by Pomponio Leto, adopting the nickname of Domenico Palladio Sorano. Owing to their elegance, his epigrams were highly praised in the Roman milieu, and Farina was also responsible for the epitaph inscribed on Leto's grave. The first edition of the Epigrammata appeared in Venice on 4 September, recorded in only one copy preserved in the Bibliothèque Mazarine, Paris (GW M29128). The style of the woodcut initials embellishing the volume confirms the attribution of printing to Bernardino Vitali. The edition offerred here is of the greatest rarity, only three copies are recorded in US institutional libraries, and only a copy was seen at auction in the 20th-century.II: Rare edition of the ten Ecloghe by the Mantuan Battista Spagnoli (1447-1516), who composed them before he entered the Carmelite order. The first edition was printed in Mantua in 1498, under the title Adolescentia. Erasmus of Rotterdam was among its readers, and called Farina 'the Christian Virgil'. The work enjoyed a wide popularity, and was especially praised by Shakespeare, who included the first verses from one ecloga by the "good old Mantuan" in his Love's Labour's Lost. Thomas Allom (1804-1872) the noted topographical artist, at a time of increased interest in China, presented the Western world with the most complete portrait of China and Chinese culture up to the middle of the nineteenth century. The engravings show architecture and scenic views, mainly of the South-East (Hong Kong, Canto, Macao, Nanjing, and Shanghai) but also include several images of Peking and Yehol. As well as his own observations, Allom includes some images based on the work of earlier artists such as Lieutenant Frederick White, R.M., Captain Stoddart, R.N. and R. Vaughan. HOWARD, Luke. Essay on the Modification of Clouds.London, John Churchill and Sons, 1865 The 'student of clouds' or 'father of meteorology' Luke Howard (1772-1864) was by profession an industrial chemist, but his great interest in meteorology led to his studies on clouds, and his devising of the system of Latin cloud names which was adopted internationally and is still in use. He introduced the three basic cloud names: cirus, cumulus and stratus. As a young man Luke Howard was one of a circle who in March, 1796, formed themselves into an Association called the Askesian Society, for the discussion of scientific questions. Among the Members were William Allen, William Phillips, Alexander Tilloch, and H. Pepys. The Society was merged into the Geological Society in 1806. He possessed a registering clock by which the variations of the barometer were recorded on the outer portion of the dial, which made one revolution in the twelve months. These diagrams were afterwards published, at great expense, under the name of Barometrographia. In Barometrographia, he noted down the atmospheric pressure readings from 1815 to 1834 at his homes in Tottenham, London, and Ackworth, Yorkshire, alongside accounts of the weather. "Howard's contributions to meteorology over half a century were profound. He had not limited himself to clouds but had looked at radiation, urban heat islands and wind flow. Fifty years before, at a lecture in Tottenham, he had even suggested that the rotation of the earth might deflect winds off course. He had explained to an audience that as the air travels north or south the earth is forever 'slipping away under it'." Peter Moore, The Weather Experiment, Chatto and Windus, 2015. Alfred Waterhouse was an English architect, famous in particular for designing the Natural History Museum of London. Only five copies are known in public libraries, and none are of have been on the market. Third edition, folio (28.5 x 22.5 cm), xvi, 37 pp., 6 plates. Green cloth gilt. He based the work on Roxburgh's Hortus Bengalensis, which had been prepared for publication by the orientalist and missionary William Carey, who himself had a strong interest in botany and founded the second of the gardens which this work catalogues. BARROW, John. Travels in China, containing descriptions, observations, and comparisons, made and collected in the course of a short residence at the Imperial Palace of Yuen-Min-Yuen, and on a subsequent journey through the country from Pekin to Canton. In which it is attempted to appreciate the rank that this extraordinary empire may be considered to hold in the scale of civilized nations. London, Cadell, 1804. Barrow accompanied Macartney's mission to the court of China in 1792 as his private secretary, and the present account of the country is one of the best illustrated English travels on China. The eight plates are from drawings by William Alexander who accompanied the embassy and later published his own work. The strict exclusion of Europeans by the Chinese Emperors had left China very much terra incognita to the western world well into the nineteenth century. Barrow was an excellent observer, and the text contains a number of descriptions of Chinese artefacts and novelties. Among these a plate of musical instruments, extensive renditions of Chinese melodies into western notation, and a long description, with illustration of the abacus. Second edition. 4to., illustrated with 8 engraved plates (1 folding), of which 5 are hand-coloured aquatints after William Alexander, nineteenth century calf gilt, some rubbing to covers and spine, red morocco label. Abbey Travel 531; Cordier 2388-9; Tooley 84; Hill I, 15.
