During the last years of the 18th century Britain suffered a number of poor corn harvests and great hardship was caused to the labouring classes. To help counter this problem the Board of Agriculture among others advocated the adoption of the potato as a substitute for wheat. Consequently " from around 1782 a number of treatises on the cultivation of the potato appeared.
