A Chinese crackled-glaze blue and white vase, Qing Dynasty, late 19th century. A lantern-shaped porcelain vase with a crackled glaze, painted in underglaze blue with two figures standing beneath a tall flower planter, flanked by a pair of moulded lion-head handles, the base bearing a four-character Chenghua mark. Dimension: 21 cm.清19世紀晚期 青花開片釉獅耳瓶 Good condition, with speckles in the glaze, particularly around the mouth rim. 品相良好,釉面有斑點,口沿一帶尤為明顯。
Two small Chinese blue and white ‘ladies’ bottle vases, Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period (1662–1722) One vase, fitted with a later metal mount, is painted with two ladies standing beside a planter filled with flowers, with a repeated scene on the reverse. The other vase is decorated with ladies and flowering plants in a continuous design. Heights: 15cm and 14cm.清康熙 青花仕女紋小瓶(一對) The vase with the metal mount has been truncated at the shoulder, with a 3cm crack extending downwards and some minor fritting around the foot rim. The taller vase has a crack below the mouth rim, extending approximately 7cm down the body. 帶金屬蓋的小瓶肩部截口,並有一條約3cm的裂紋向下延伸,足緣有輕微毛口。較高的小瓶口沿下方有一道裂紋,延伸至瓶身中央,約7cm長。
A HADDONSTONE PLANTER BASE LATE 20TH CENTURY In the 18th century Neo-Classical manner 39cm high, 61cm wide, 30cm deep Together with a marble elephant mounted above, 55cm high, 53cm deep Condition Report: With weathering - colour variance from exposure, wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, outdoor garden use, and cleaning Elephant with natural flaws- some of which have widened from frost and weathering notably: top of head, trunk (with loss), front right leg, along front of base, and with repaired break to rear left corner which is now loose and needs remedial work. A Great War M.C, group of four awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel J. S. Harper, Manchester Regiment and Machine Gun Corps, one of the first Officers to be awarded the Military Cross in January 1915 when the first awards to the B.E.F. were promulgated, and the first recipient of the Military Cross to the Manchester Regiment Military Cross, G.V.R. unnamed as issued; 1914 Star, with clasp (Lieut: J. S. Harper, Manch. R.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Lt. Col. J. S. Harper.) mounted court-style for display, very fine and better (4) £1,000-£1,400 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, September 2004. M.C. London Gazette 1 January 1915 (this being the very first Gazette in which the Military Cross was awarded, and the first gazetted award to the Manchester Regiment). M.I.D., London Gazettes 20 October 1914 and 4 January 1917. James Stuart Harper was born on 3 November 1885 in Ceylon, the son of J. Harper, a tea planter, and Mary Harper. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned in August 1905 and posted to 3rd Battalion the Manchester Regiment. He served with the Regiment during the Great War on the Western Front, was present at Mons, Bavay, Le Cateau, Marne, the crossing of the Aisne, Richebourg and L’Orgies, where he was wounded and repatriated to England, and was promoted to Captain on 27 April 1915. He rejoined 2nd Battalion at Ypres on 27 June 1915, before again being wounded and repatriated to England on 1 August 1915. In November 1916, Harper was appointed Acting Lieutenant Colonel with the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), and was appointed 93rd Brigade Divisional Machine Gun Officer in August 1917. Following the Great War he was restored to the Manchester Regiment, reverting to the rank of Captain. He was promoted Major on 1 September 1924, and in May 1931 was transferred to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He died in March 1943 at Barnet, Hertfordshire.
