s. Luciano Fabro b. 1936 TONDO E RETTANGOLO transparent and mirrored glass overall: 96x142cm.; 37x56in. Executed in 1964. Provenance Galleria Notizie Turin Acquired from the above by the previous owners in the late 1960s Exhibited Milan Galleria Vismara Luciano Fabro 1965 Striking a balance between the sensual and the intellectual Tondo e rettangolo is one of Fabro's most important works. Through this work he explores the properties and functions of material in real space forming the identitiy of the work within the perceptual and physical environment created by the viewer. The transparent and reflective qualities of the glass act to explore space and the perception of space; the artwork is thus serving as a window on the world as well as an imitation or reflection of it. This work demands mental and intellectual awareness within the intensity of emotional and aesthetic gratification. When we stand in front of it we get the momentary impression of the suspension of rational order. Crucial to this impact is the charge of energy created by the juxtaposition of materials; the glass and the mirror meeting in a fusion which both guarantees their individual identities whilst simultaneously creating a wholly new expressive dimension.
