Formerly the property of Diana Princess of Wales - a fine wool shawl with embroidered yellow, purple and white silk decoration and floral borders. The shawl was presented to The Princess by Iman Abdul Qadir in the courtyard of the Badshahi Mosque on her State Visit to Pakistan in 1991. She immediately wrapped it around her head with the Iman's help. He told her about the symbolic nature of this gift which was that long ago, the Prophet gave a Christian girl a black shawl as a symbol of the unity between their two religions. Upon her return to England, the Princess gave the shawl to her friend and acupuncturist Oonagh Shanley-Toffolo, who until her death in August 2015, had cherished it. The shawl is sold with a photostat copy of a letter from Princess Diana to Oonagh, dated February 2nd 1992, mentioning the gift of the shawl, a copy of HELLO! magazine dated October 1991, in which The Princess is shown being presented with the shawl and wearing it, a Sunday Mirror newspaper article interview with Oonagh, discussing her friendship with The Princess and showing them both wearing the shawl. A wooden case with suspension chain and two hinged doors, mirror to the interior, triangular pediment and scooped plaque above; bands of painted flowers and leaves to the borders, panels of yellow and green floral ornament, to the pediment and inner faces of the doors; panel of scrolled leaves and tendrils to the reverse; outer faces of the doors with scene of al fresco drinking and dining in a landscape, signed at the foot of each door. 1.1 kg, 50cm (19 3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired London art market, 1970-1980. Fine condition.
