A Bow figure of the muse 'Euterpe', circa 1750-52By the 'Muses Modeller', modelled seated and resting her right arm on an organ with masked stops above the keys and the inscription 'Euterpe for the musical instruments', a large flute or trumpet held by her left side, a stringed instrument, perhaps a lute or viola, a triangle and some pipes nestled around her feet, left in the white, 15.5cm high Footnotes:ProvenanceMavis Bimson CollectionMavis Bimson discusses the set of Bow Muses in her paper 'The Missing Muse', ECC Trans, Vol.19, Pt.3 (2006), pp.569-72 and declares that of the eight known models 'The finest of the figures are undoubtedly Euterpe and Erato'. The muse of lyric poetry and music is certainly overflowing with attributes. A very rare Dutch stipple-engraved facet stem wine glass by J Wolff, 1770-1780The generous round funnel bowl engraved with a seated cross-legged hatted gentleman playing the lute, serenading a lady who has an open book on her lap to his left, both in seventeenth-century attire, with an ornamental vase of flowers atop a pedestal between them, a faint castle in the distance, the figures flanked by shrubs, the lower part to the bowl cut with thumbnail facets, on an hexagonal facet-cut stem and conical foot, 14.2cm highFootnotes:The identity of J Wolff is unknown, but if he was a relative of the renowned master engraver David Wolff it can only be his brother Jacob, born in 1742, see Frans Smit, Dutch Eighteenth-Century Dutch Stipple-Engravings on Glass (1993), p.17. A total of just twenty glasses by this engraver are recorded by Smit, including two bearing the signature 'J Wolff', one of which is dated 1780. Two more examples can be added to those recorded by Smit, including a goblet sold by Bonhams on 21 June 2022, lot 132 and another on 20 June 2023, lot 101.J Wolff stippled in a very distinctive style with backgrounds often sparsely dotted and darker objects frequently left almost devoid of stippling, instead delineated by outlines. The style of the engraving on the present lot is therefore characteristic of this engraver. He specialised in depictions of country folk and rural life. The present lot is unrecorded by Smit and therefore represents an important addition to this artist's oeuvre. Two examples with related scenes depicting a hatted man seated on a bench and serenading a lady with a lute are recorded by Smit (1993) on p.147, nos.Eb.24, Eb.25 and Eb.26. The latter of these was sold by Bonhams on 20 June 2023, lot 100.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Harry Clarke RHA (1889 - 1931) Hilda Luvia – Lady playing a theorbo Watercolour and pencil, 34.5 x 27.5cm (13½ x 10¾") Signed and dated 1921Provenance: Albert Ernest Wood KC (1873 - 1941), Marino, Killiney, Co. Dublin (now known as Abbey Lea, residence of H.E. The Ambassador of Australia), thence by descent to the current owners.Harry Clarke, perhaps most famous for his intensely coloured jewel-like stained glass and for his dramatic black & white illustrations and graphic work, could also, with consummate ease, create delicate pastel-coloured images such as this illustration. Although the colour palette may be less familiar, the exquisite drawing of the delicate female musician has all the hallmarks of Clarke’s finesse. It is thought that this pencil and watercolour image dates to c.1921 and may have been submitted to Hodder and Staunton, though ultimately not used, for the Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault (1922), a publication for which Clarke provided twelve colour plates. The watercolour was exhibited at the sixth exhibition of the Arts and Crafts Society of Ireland in September 1921 and was jokingly titled, in Joycean mode, Hilda Luvia. The leading authority on Clarke, the late Dr Nicola Gordon Bowe, interviewed the artist’s friend, Victor Wood, who explained that the title was derived from an incident when Clarke, walking across Butt Bridge, saw a barge tied up below with the inscription ‘Hilda I Luv Yer’ painted on her side. The title of the drawing is a blend of this with ‘Anna Livia’, the river’s familiar Dublin name, which reflects not only Clarke’s irreverent sense of humour but also his ease with combining disparate references – something that is apparent in the imagery of the watercolour itself. Clarke depicts the musician in a vast skirt which occupies a third of the picture, its volume rivaling the mountain peaks behind. The floral details on the skirt’s fabric recall the designs he had made for sets of handkerchiefs commissioned by Sefton’s of Belfast a few years earlier. The musician is shown playing a theorbo, a member of the lute family which was popular during the Baroque music era (1600–1750) as part of a small basso continuo group or as a solo instrument as depicted here. While the instrument may be associated with the Baroque period, the style of skirt came into fashion in the eighteenth century, and the bobbed hairstyle more common in nineteenth or twentieth century though notably the unevenness of the hair cut is at variance to the sophistication of her costume. In the background one can see a fairy tale hilltop town with ogee domes and spires, but the spindly, bleak tree hints at the orient with its Japonisme style. This illustration shows Clarke in eclectic mode, happy to draw on a range of sources, influences and eras, and whip them into a delicate confection. Dr David Caron November 20231. See Bowe, Nicola Gordon, Harry Clarke, the Life and Work 2015 ed.), p. 192. 2. Recounted to Nicola Gordon Bowe by Victor Wood in 1976 (Albert Wood, father of Victor, had bought the picture at Clarke's London exhibition in 1925). See Bowe, Nicola Gordon, Harry Clarke, the Life and Work (2015 ed), p. 344.

Peter Hammill (Van der Graaf Generator) - Studio used nine course lute by Andy Manson, Devon, labelled 'A.B. Manson, December 1974', within fitted hard case *Commissioned by Charisma records owner and VdGG manager Tony Stratton Smith for Peter Hammill. Bearing a dedication plaque to the fourth fret position inscribed 'For Peter Hammill T.S.S 1974'; Peter states 'based on the year made, it might have been to celebrate 'The Silent Corner'. A very kind and generous thought but to be fair, I was never going to be much cop as a lutenist. It did have a starring role on 'Yoga', from “Over”, where I tuned all the bass strings to D and recorded it at both normal and half speed to produce a glorious racket.'

Robert Goodloe Harper Pennington, American 1854-1920- An interior with a seated lady playing a lute; oil on panel, bears old inscribed label attached to the reverse, 28.3 x 23.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note: Pennington was a successful society portraitist. He was initially a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. While visiting Venice in 1880, he met and stayed on to study with James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) which had a significant impact on his subsequent work. His sitters included Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) in a full-length portrait for a wedding present for Wilde and his wife Constance, and the future Edward VII (1841-1910), who he painted a number of times when Prince of Wales. The subject of the present work, depicting a lady in historical dress and playing a lute, is a slight departure for the artist, who is best-known for his portraits of contemporary sitters. Its handling, however, is typical of Pennington's studies, and exhibits his significant skill in depicting the sitter's graceful form and the smooth texture of her skin.
RARE MEISSEN ANTHROPOMORPHIC PART TEA SERVICE LATE 18TH CENTURY the cups and saucers of wrythen and basket weave moulded form; each piece painted to the centre with a humorous vignette of an animal engaged in various pursuits, such as a cat washing laundry, a fox carrying two baskets containing ducks and eggs, a kitten playing a lute to dancing mice etc.; all within a trellis border issuing sprays of flowers; with purple scale ground decoration to the gilt edged rims; comprising a teapot with matched cover, five saucers and three tea cups; underglaze blue crossed swords marksDimensions:teapot 11.5cm high, saucers 13.5cm diameter, cups 17cm highProvenance:Provenance: Property of the late Mrs. Jean BogieNote: The anthropomorphic scenes on the porcelain in this group relates to a tradition of decoration inspired by characters in fables by writers such as Aesop and La Fontaine, which had been translated into prose by the 18th century in Germany and which would have circulated widely in educated society. The scenes were intended to point out the foibles of humanity and would have been humorous to an 18th century audience, who would have recognised the references to popular fables. The activities of the animals depicted are quite curious and specific and likely relate to a particular fable source. Anthropomorphic services created at Meissen are rare and few are in existence.
