In whole area of Ancient Mesopotamia, music had a vital social and religious function. It was an important part of evens both official,ceremonial and religious. A Chinese blue and white porcelain brush pot (bitong), mark of Chenghua but Kangxi period, of cylindrical form, finely painted with a continuous scene of poets and attendants indulging in scholarly pursuits, including a group seated at a table playing weiqu, others seated whilst one plays the lute, and another two figures and attendant watching a scholar writing on a rock, all within a fenced garden with banana plants, rocks and clouds, underglaze blue six character mark of Chenghua to base, height approx 15.1cm, diameter approx 17.9cm. There is also some restoration to the bow and the front foot. The glaze is crazed. There are a few minor firing cracks and some wear to the gilding. Girl with Lute - There is restoration to the top of the lute and the left arm. There is also some flaking to the paint on the base and the black hair. A Victorian Staffordshire pottery flatback figural group of Queen Victoria and King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia, c1860, titled 'Queen and King of Sardinia', to the base, 34.5cm high, a Victorian Staffordshire pottery flatback figure of the Prince of Wales with a dog, titled to the base, 37cm high and two Victorian Staffordshire pottery flatbacks of couples, the first with the lady holding a parasol, 38.5cm high, the second with the lady holding a lute, 36cm high CONDITION REPORT: The dog's head has been broken off at the lower neck and re-glued/restored and the dog's nose has been restored also. There is crazing to the glaze. Some minor wear to the gilt lettering. There is a large hairline crack running below the King's shoulders and down his side 2/3 of the way down. There is another hairline crack running around the top of his head from his neck. There are two small firing cracks and a small amount of damage/fault? to the Queen's nose which has been restored/re-painted. Prince of Wales - The neck of the dog and the Prince are both broken and re-glued. There is some flaking of the paint. The glaze is crazed and the gilt is worn in places. The Couples - Couple One (Parasol) The base is restored including the man's leg and foot and the bottom of the dress, the centre and outside of the dress are also restored. The tips of both noses are rubbed. There is some wear to the gilding and enamel. There is restoration to the top of the lady's hat. The glaze is crazed in places. Couple Two (Mandolin) There is some wear to the gilding. The glaze is crazed. There are firing cracks beneath the ladies arms on both sides and between the man's legs and on the right of the woman's neck. There is some flaking to the black enamel

By a Person of Honour, 1st edition, printed by Thomas Harper for Humphrey Moseley, 1653, titles with printer's woodcut device, three engraved plates, including a lute, woodcut illustrations, errata leaf at end, some spotting and light soiling, modern half calf, spine slightly faded, small 4to Wing D1132. Originally written in 1618, but not published until shortly after his death in 1650, The 'Person of Honour' translator, identified in a contemporary manuscript hand to the title as 'L. Brouncker', was William Brouncker, 2nd Viscount Brouncker (1620-1684), a mathematician and first President of the Royal Society in 1662. Descartes' early attempt at reconciling the relationship between the physical and psycological perceptions in music, using a scientific and mathematical method. (1)
