An unusual jade Pendant, of indeterminate date, in the form of a qin wrapped in cloth and tied by a ribbon, the exposed end with key-fret, the stone of mottled pink and purple and curiously phallic in evocation, 9cm The qin is a seven-stringed musical instrument most nearly related to the zither or lute and very difficult to play. Managing it was one of the Four Scholarly Pursuits to be attained by the literati. CONDITION REPORT: Centre left there is a small rough mark on the band. Provenance: as per catalogue.

Hans VON AACHEN (1552-1615)OIL ON PANELS, A PAIR The Preparation for, and the Feast of Belshazzar.The former with figures processing toward the Banqueting Hall carrying covered dishes and tazzas of food, to the left further figures obtaining opulent precious metal table wares from a tiered display of sacred objects from the Temple of Jerusalem, the latter picture with many figures sat feasting at a table in a sumptuous Banqueting hall lit by a chandelier and caryatid candle brackets, with numerous other figures in attendance.Belshazzar the Babylonion regent sat beneath a richly embroidered canopy alarmed at the sight of a hand high-up in the vaulted ceiling pointing to an inscriptionMene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin` (Weighed in the balance and found wanting) below which a vision of the ball of Babylon, to the lower left of the composition a group of musicians centered by an elegant lady gazing out at the spectator whilst playing an organ,surrounded by men playing a lute, sackbut, viol, and violin, the banqueting table lit by candles, with numerous figures holding long torches29 1/4" x 34 1/4" (75.5cm x 87cm)
Composite lute currently strung for six double courses, 18th century and later, the body of twenty-five rosewood ribs intersected by bone inlay, the table with pierced parchment architectural rose encircled by multiple stringing, one band inset with mother of pearl segments, further inlaid below the bridge and at the base of the fingerboard with mother of pearl hearts and with a polygonal tortoiseshell plaque above the bridge, the back of the neck with a fine ebony and ivory chequerboard inlay, rosewood fingerboard with eight frets and a further six frets on the table, guitar-style shaped head with reverse pegs, length of body 17", 43.2cm, string length 20 1/4", 51.5cm
