Exceptional Great War Letters Written From Gallipoli & Lemnos by Corporal R. "Dick" Holding 15 Platoon Royal Scots, 88th Brigade, 29th Division. Some 40 letters, many written while he was serving in Gallipoli to his girlfriend Bella. Unusually frank and well written letters providing a painful, but illuminating account of the 5th Royal Scots on the Peninsular. Some letters have been heavily censored, though much remains and some of the censored sections can be read. He describes many close calls "A shell struck the parapet just over my head, shaved a foot of earth off and burst at the back of the trench.. splitting open the head of the man next to me" & "I got a pretty near one myself, a piece was cut off the side of my left boot by a shrapnel bullet, same shell killed two and wounded several" His frustration at the poor food, awful conditions and lack of progress is often reflected in some bitter comments describing himself as a "tramp" in rags. Many individuals are mentioned by name, particularly those killed or wounded ie Sgt Munro killed by a "Land Torpedo" His unit clearly fights hard and he mentions a number of attacks with fixed bayonets. "That is 5 DCM's in the Company" Over the weeks his mood becomes darker and he spares little from his girlfriend " Segt Graham who was just out of hospital had his hand and head blown off it was a bloody affair" He is particularly unhappy at having to return to Gallipoli from Lemnos after much action and suffering and a very depleted unit. The amalgamation of the 5th and 9th Battalions, through casualties causes him more bitterness and apparently a loss of rank. His girlfriend Bella shares his feeling of unfairness in her letters (commented on by Dick) and is apparently herself on strike in Scotland. One detailed section describes the Australians as "All right to fight with but they simply spoil everything for all other troops" They had apparently broken into the Garrison Canteen, knocked out the sentry and stolen a barrel of beer, 30 of them were found helpless lying round the empty barrel. Certainly the most candid and descriptive letters from Gallipoli we have seen, some 40 in total , most with original envelopes, many 5/6 pages long, closely and legibly written, a few of which are from 1917 when he is in France. Important collection.
