A FINE BIEDERMEIER GRANDE-SONNERIE STRIKING LONGCASE REGULATOR OF ONE-MONTH DURATIONJOSEPH MATUSCHKA, IGLAU, CIRCA 1825The four pillar triple train month duration movement incorporating barrels extending through the backplate with the rear pivots facilitated by inverted arch-shaped sub plate spaced from the backplate by four pillars, the going train with Graham type deadbeat escapement incorporating tall inverted Y-shaped pallets regulated by brass lenticular bob pendulum with shaft formed from three hollow glass rods each with coloured velvet inserts and fitted with a brass clip for engaging with the crutch with cam-type beat adjustment, the quarter train sounding on one of the pair of graduated gongs positioned on a brass Y-shaped bracket behind the movement followed by the hour train sounding the last hour on the second gong, the 10.5 inch silvered brass Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial and signed JOSEPH MATUSCHKA IN IGLAU to centre, with decorative blued steel hands within fine engine-milled brass bezel, the architectural six-light boxwood edged figured birch veneered case with triangular pediment over square glazed hinged front panel and conforming fixed side glasses to hood, over trunk with small complex cornice mouldings to throat above glazed arched aperture to the removable front panel, flanked by slender architectural pilasters with Ionic inspired carved capitals and with further slender glass panels to sides, the base with concave top moulding over recessed panel to front and conforming moulded skirt.207cm (81.5ins) high, 48cm (19ins) wide, 22cm (8.75ins) deep. Provenance: The Selwyn Demmy Collection. Joseph Matuschka was born in 1796 and died in Iglau, Czeckoslovakia in 1863. When compared with contemporary Austrian 'dachl' wall regulators the restrained simple architectural proportions of the case of the current lot would suggest that the present regulator was made around 1825. The triple glass rod pendulum shaft is highly unusual however makes sense with regards to use in a regulator as glass has a negligible temperature expansion coefficient. Another regulator by Matuschka, complete with a basically identical pendulum (apparently also incorporating coloured plush fabric cores to the rods), can currently be found in the stock of Stephen Andréewich, Vienna. Please note: Evidence in the case baseboard suggests that the movement and dial may not be original to the case

Continental School (19th/20th century) Portrait of a lady, seated Oil on canvas 67 x 59.5cm (26¼ x 23¼ in.) Provenance: The collection of Eardley Knollys (1902-1991), friend and associate of the Bloomsbury Group, artist, critic and owner of the Storran Gallery, London, from 1936 to 1944 Bequeathed to Mattei Radev (1927-2009) and, subsequently, to the present owner Eardley Knollys (1902-1991) was born in Alresford, Hampshire. He studied at Winchester College and continued his education at Christ Church College in Oxford. Knollys interest in the arts and his reputation as an art critic grew during the 1920s and in 1936 Knollys opened The Storran Gallery, opposite Harrods with his partner Frank Coombs. The gallery exhibited renowned artists such as Amedeo Modigliani, Maurice Utrillo, Ivon Hitchens, Pablo Picasso and Victor Pasmore to name just a few. Coombs tragically passed away in an air raid during World War II in Belfast in 1941. Knollys closed the gallery shortly afterwards.   In 1945, Knollys along with music critic and novelist Edward Sackville-West and music critic Desmond Shawe-Taylor purchased a Georgian rectory in Long Crichel, Dorset. Along with James Lees-Milne, literary critic Raymond Mortimer and gay activist and eye surgeon Patrick Trevor-Roper, the house became a centre for young creatives, where these young men and their friends could immerse themselves in books, music, art and poetry. These passionate young men hosted guests such as Ben Nicholson, Duncan Grant, Sibyl Colefax and film director Anthony Asquith.   Knollys joined James Lees-Milne working for the National Trust during World War II and published diaries recording their trips to some of the most renowned British country houses.   In 1965, Knollys, a well respected art critic and member of the Bloomsbury art group inherited a collection of artworks which had belonged to Edward Sackville-West. In 1967 Knollys and Mattei Radev purchased a hunting lodge in Hampshire and they both painted and worked in the artist's studio attached to the lodge. Knollys' interest in the arts continued and he added to the collection right up until his death in 1991. Knollys' collection was bequeathed to Mattei Radev, who continued to grow the important collection.   Mattei Radev became an iconic member of the artistic and literary Bloomsbury group. Radev was a Bulgarian émigré who settled initially in Glasgow after escaping Bulgaria through Turkey. When he first arrived in London he started working at Whittington Hospital as an orderly and met eye surgeon Patrick Trevor-Roper. Trevor-Roper was a gay activist and introduced Radev to likeminded friends in London. Influenced by these new acquaintances in artistic circles Radev decided to pursue an apprenticeship in framing. In 1960 he set up his own workshop in Fitzrovia with the help of a financial loan from Eardley Knollys. Clients included John Banting, Graham Sutherland and Duncan Grant. The framers continued under Radev's management until the 1990s. Radev visited Long Crichel many times and met his life-long lover E.M. Forster, the notable novelist and literary critic.   The Radev collection represents the three strong individuals involved, Sackville-West who championed Modernism, Eardley Knollys whose passion for French Impressionism shines through and Radev for his loyalty to British artists with whom he was friends and in business with. Condition Report: Relined. Light surface dirt and fine craquelure throughout. Condition Report Disclaimer

Frances Mary Hodgkins (New Zealand/British 1869-1947) The Mill Wheel signed 'Frances Hodgkins' (lower right) watercolour39 x 48cmProvenance: With Alex Reid & Lefevre Ltd., where acquired by the parents of the current owner The present lot is probably the picture which was exhibited in 1943 at the Lefevre Galleries, Gouaches by Frances Hodgkins - A New Series of Gouaches painted during 1942-3, March-April 1943, cat. no. 5. We are grateful to Mary Kisler for her assistance with cataloguing this lot.Footnote: Although she is today considered one of New Zealand’s most distinguished modern artists, it was during her time in Western Europe, particularly in Britain, that Frances Hodgkins developed her distinctive style and palette - deviating from the pervasive influence of Impressionism towards the Modernist style that she would ultimately be recognised for. Born in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1869 to English emigre, William Mathew Hodgkins, a solicitor, barrister and part-time painter and his Australian wife, Rachel Owen, Hodgkins enjoyed a rich childhood, both materially and culturally. Encouraged by their father, a dedicated votary of watercolour painting and a founding member of the Otago Society of Artists and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Frances and her elder sister, Isabel, spent their formative years sketching and painting the New Zealand landscape. Although it is generally accepted that Isabel’s artistic talents, particularly in landscape painting, were more apparent in these early years, Frances’ career would ultimately outpace that of her sister’s. In 1893, following her inaugural exhibition three years prior, Hodgkins began studying under Italian artist, Girolamo Nerli. Whilst the early tutelage provided by her father equipped Hodgkins with her fundamental techniques, her relationship with Nerli undoubtedly changed the trajectory of her career. Under Nerli, Hodgkins’ style evolved, demonstrating a boldness of form and colour previously unseen in her work. In 1901, after studying, and briefly teaching, at the Dunedin School of Art, Hodgkins left New Zealand for Europe. Over the intervening 12 years, Hodgkins travelled extensively, oscillating between continents and imbibing inspiration from every place she visited - in her own words: “I wanted to see the masterpieces of all time; learn what was being done in my chosen medium and measure myself against the moderns”. Although this period in her career does not reflect the full maturation of her style, Hodgkins was nonetheless beginning to receive critical acclaim, winning numerous prizes and having her work exhibited by several eminent institutions, notably, in Paris, the Salon and the Société Internationale d'Aquarellistes. In 1908, Hodgkins settled in Paris, where she became the first woman to be appointed as instructor at the Académie Colarossi and established her own school for watercolour painting. Although this was a professionally fertile time for Hodgkins, the outbreak of the First World War forced her to flee Paris and settle in St Ives, Cornwall. Despite this being a period of great financial hardship for Hodgkins, it was also a time of immense creative freedom and experimentation. In St Ives, Hodgkins was quickly accepted into the artistic circle and soon found herself associated with artists including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Graham Sutherland and John and Myfanwy Piper. It was also around this time that Hodgkins, encouraged by her close friends, Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines, began experimenting in oils and developing her distinctive Modernist style. After living and working in Cornwall for eight years, Hodgkins spent several years living between Manchester, Paris and Cornwall, before moving to London in 1927 where she swiftly gained the admiration of influential London dealer, Arthur Howell of St George’s Gallery in Hanover Square. The partnership between Hodgkins and Howell precipitated a longstanding relationship with the Lefevre and Leicester Galleries, which would last until her death in 1947. Although Hodgkins was recognised as an exceptionally gifted artist during her lifetime, as a member of the avant-garde, she remained on the peripheries of the commercial art world and, resultingly, achieved very little financial success. Today, however, Hodgkins’ work is prized by collectors and institutions across the globe. Traversing between styles, hemispheres and disciplines, Hodgkins’ remarkable oeuvre is demonstrative of her fearless spirit and is characterised by her daring palette and bold, simplified forms.Condition report: Watercolour on paper stuck down to cardboard and surrounded by cardboard mount, circa 1943. Possibly some fading, though the palette is characteristic of Hodgkins' watercolours. There is some minor and scattered foxing, and the surface is a little discoloured due to ingrained surface dirt, there is also a small, brown, pinhead sized accretion to the centre of the image. Where there is no paint on the surface, the paper shows typical age toning. There is some typical acid burning beneath the mount and some faint scores across the surface, though these may be intrinsic to the piece.
