1961 Jaguar Mk. II (3.4 litre) MOD Transmission: manualMileage:67641The Jaguar Mk. II was a medium size saloon built from 1959 to 1967 as a successor to the 2.4 and 3.4 models, manufactured between 1957 and 1959.  The Mk. II was handsome, powerful and a good handling saloon which was offered with a choice of three six-cylinder twin cam engines; 2.4 litre, 3.4 litre or 3.8 litre. After the appreciation of the Mk. I, Jaguar's successor was well received making a good car even better.  Similar in appearance, but with a bigger glass area, it boasted a wider track to improve road holding together with minor front suspension changes to reduce body roll and all-round disc rather than drum brakes. The 210bhp 3.4 litre engine variant proved to be the most popular, offering the best compromise between performance and economy.  Naturally, the performance was excellent, and the Mk. II has enjoyed great success on track and can still be a very competitive historic race car.  Raced by all the top drivers of the day including Graham Hill, Roy Salvadori and Michael Parkes, the Mk. II has scored victories throughout saloon car races in the sixties and was also raced across Europe in the Tour De France and Monte Carlo rally. The car also gained a reputation as a capable 'getaway car' among the criminal underworld. The Mk. II had seating for five adults and in 3.8 litre specification could outrun almost any other car on the road.  Conversely, the Jaguar Mk. II received acclaim amongst law enforcement too; used by John Thaw as the fictional crime-fighting character Inspector Morse in the 1980s television show of the same name.Originally registered on the 1st June 1962 and presented in grey with contrasting blood red trim showing a lovely patina this Mk. II is privately owned. This example is described by the vendor as driving very well with the perfectly balanced 3.4 litre engine combining with the manual Moss gearbox with optional overdrive. Supplied with a current V5C registration document it also benefits from having a desirable registration number of 98 PTG which is included with the sale of the car, together with a good history file.

Lot 227

1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 2+2 Coupé Transmission: manualMileage:63768Launched at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, the Jaguar E-Type was nothing short of a revelation. With its heady blend of supercar performance, breath-taking styling and low price-tag, the newcomer left rivals reeling and customers clamouring. Early sportscar racing success at the hands of Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori amongst others helped cement its reputation. Built as a monocoque with a front subframe to cradle the engine, the model's combination of all-round independent suspension, rack and pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes gave it excellent road holding and handling capabilities. Fed by triple SU HD8 carburettors and topped with a 'straight port' DOHC cylinder head, its indomitable 3781cc straight-six engine was quoted as developing some 265bhp and 260lbft of torque. Allied to a four-speed Moss gearbox, it reputedly enabled the E-type to sprint from 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds and onto 150mph. The E-type remains for many the ultimate production Jaguar. This lovely, home market, right hand drive, 1966 Jaguar E-Type 2+2 Fixedhead Coupé has recently had over £87,000 spent on recommissioning, body repairs and painting. Purchased by the owner in 2016 after being in long term storage, the last MoT test certificate was in 1999 and shows the mileage then to be 63,085 miles. It is believed the car had some restoration work carried out in 1979 when the colour was changed from red to dark blue, and the engine was rebuilt in 1985. Now finished in Gunmetal Grey the restorers retained the original maroon leather seats, which are in good condition, but replaced the headlining and carpets. This lovely E-Type Coupé is supplied with a V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in April 2023 and a file containing old invoices and MoT test certificates from the mid 1980's to 1999. The E-Type Jaguar is regarded to be one of the prettiest sports cars from the 1960's, as said by Enzo Ferrari, and good examples remains as sort after in today's market.

Aviation pioneers. A photograph album containing approximately 380 photographs and real photo postcards, depicting early aviators and aeroplanes, collected by a Miss G. Choate, all corner mounted, including approx. 70 photographs signed by aviators such as: Claude Grahame-White, Thomas O. M. Sopwith, Edwin A. V. Roe, Francis K. McClean, and Harry G. Hawker, plus a few colour printed early aviation postcards, including a souvenir postcard from the first English airmail flight, dated 'Sp 9 1911', some photographs faded (mostly unsigned towards rear of album), support leaves brittle and faded, many detached, contemporary cloth, worn, spine detached and loosely inserted, plus a few loose photographs at rear, a copy of 'Flying at Hendon: a Pictorial Record', compiled by Clive R. Smith, 1974, and several ink manuscript notes from aviators, addressed to Miss Choate and accompanying signed photographs sent to her, 4toQTY: (1)NOTE:Miss G. Choate lived at Hendon and apparently spent much of her time at Hendon airfield, watching and buying photographs of early aviators and their aircraft. Indeed, it appears that she may have taken some of the photographs herself. In one of the signed manuscript notes, sent to Miss Choate to accompany a photograph that an aviator was returning after signing, the airman remarks, "May I compliment you on the excellency of the photo, by its sharpness your lens must be very good...", and in several of the manuscript notes the aviators ask if it is possible to obtain a copy of the photograph Miss Choate has taken of them. The subjects of the signed photographs include:Claude Grahame-White (1879-1959) was an English pioneer of aviation, and the first to make a night flight. He was one of the first people to qualify as a pilot in England, becoming the holder of Royal Aero Club certificate No. 6 in April 1910. One of the most influential aviation pioneers, he was nvolved in promoting the military application of air power before the First World War with a campaign called "Wake Up Britain", whilst experimenting with fitting various weapons and bombs to aircraft. During the war itself he flew the first night patrol mission against an expected German raid on 5 September 1914. In 1911 he established a flying school at Hendon Aerodrome, and many of the signed photographs in this collection are from pilots attending the Grahame-White Flying School. Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith (1888-1989) was an English aviation pioneer. During the First World War his Sopwith Aviation Company, based at Brooklands, produced more than 18,000 aircraft for the allied forces, including nearly 6,000 Sopwith Camel single-seat fighters. Financial troubles after the war resulted in Sopwith closing his company, but then re-forming it under the name of his chief engineer and test pilot Harry Hawker. Edwin Alliott Verdon Roe (1877-1958) was a pioneer English pilot and aircraft manufacturer, and founder in 1910 of the Avro company. In 1909 he became the first Englishman to fly an all-British machine. Francis Kennedy McClean (1876-1955) was a British civil engineer and pioneer aviator, one of the founding members of the Royal Aero Club and one of the founders of naval aviation and amateur flying. Harry George Hawker (1889-1921) was an Australian aviation pioneer. He was the chief test pilot for Sopwith and was also involved in the design of many of their aircraft. After the First World War, he co-founded Hawker Aircraft. This signed photographic postcard seems to commemorate his winning of the No. 1 British Michelin Cup for 1912, judging by the ink manuscript inscription.Plus numerous others including: D. Graham Gilmour (1885-1912), Charles Grey Grey (known as ‘C G’; 1875-1953), Charles Gordon Bell (1889-1918), William Barnard Rhodes-Moorhouse (1887-1915), Wilfred Parke (1889-1912), William Hugh Ewen (1879-1947), Cheridah de Beauvoir Stocks (1887-1971), Sydney Vincent Sippe (1889-1968), Louis Noel (1872-1939), Harold Blackburn (1879-1959), Arthur Murray Longmore (1885-1970), Louis Arbon Strange (1891-1966), Samuel Franklin Cody (1867-1913).

NOSOTTI/ MAKER GLASS MIRROR FURNITURE/ 397.398 OXFORD ST. 399.399/ ESTD 1822(181cm wide, 92cm high, 52cm deep)Note: Charles Andrea Nosotti is listed as a carver, gilder, upholsterer and cabinetmaker at 2 Dean Street, Soho, from 1835-1840, although he appears to have set up a 'looking glass manufactory' in 1831. Almost certainly born in Milan, his high standard of workmanship led him to exhibit a giltwood cabinet at the 1862 London Exhibition that he had made for the Countess of Waldegrave's drawing room at Strawberry Hill. The cabinet is illustrated in J. Meyer, Great Exhibitions 1851-1900, London, 2006, p.167. Further commissions came from the millionaire industrialist John Allcroft at Stokesay Court, Shropshire. Nosotti advertised furniture in the Art Journal Catalogue of the International Exhibition, 1867, noting that his firm enjoyed the patronage of the Princess of Wales. He later collaborated with the leading Victorian makers Howard and Sons and this piece certainly has the hallmarks of this collaboration. A comparable piece was sold at Sotheby's lot 136 28 August 1994 Literature: Graham Child, World Mirrors 1650-1900, p.22 J. Meyer, Great Exhibitions 1851-1900, London, 2006, p.167.
