A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER 'PHOENIX' SNUFF BOTTLE, PROBABLY IMPERIAL, CHINA, 1780-1860Of compressed form with flat lip and recessed, convex oval foot surrounded by a foot rim, finely carved in high relief with a flying phoenix amidst clouds on both sides, the narrow sides carved with elongated rocky promontories, the neck with a band of pendent acanthus leaves, the upper neck and base with plain borders.Provenance: Galerie Max, Brussels, 19 February 1966 (according to an ancient family ledger inspected by Cabinet Portier, Paris, France, during their appraisal of the complete de Strycker estate; this ledger remains in the possession of the de Strycker family and may not be copied). Collection of Robert and Isabelle de Strycker, acquired from the above and thence by decent in the same family. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Universite Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France's post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976). In 1964, the couple lent 174 objects from their collection to the Belgian city of Leuven's museum for an exhibition titled Oude kunst in Leuvens Privebezit ('Old Art in Private Collections in Leuven'), and in 1967 they lent around thirty Japanese objects to the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels for their exhibition Kunst van Japan im belgischen Privatverzameingen ('Japanese Art in Belgian Private Collections').Condition: Good condition with minor wear, expected small age cracks, bubbling around the rim, minuscule nicks, and few tiny losses. The stopper lost.Weight: 50.9 gDimensions: Height 64 mm, Diameter neck 15 mm and mouth 6 mm Expert's note: This is one of a series of cinnabar lacquer snuff bottles of a distinctive style and may be the mid-Qing continuation of a well-known, eighteenth-century imperial group. The subject of the phoenix (fenghuang) as the main decoration, making it emblematic as opposed to representing any particular myth in which the bird may figure, suggests that it was made for the Court, since this bird came, by the Qing dynasty, to represent the Empress.Auction result comparison:Type: Near identicalAuction: Christie's New York, 17 September 2008, lot 82Price: USD 8,125 or approx. AN IMPERIAL CINNABAR LACQUER 'ZHANG SHENG'S DREAM' SNUFF BOTTLE, CHINA, 1730-1830Attributed to the Palace Workshops, Beijing. Of flattened ovoid form, deeply carved through the layers of cinnabar lacquer with a continuous landscape scene divided by rockwork and trees, one side with Zhang Sheng sleeping at his desk on a covered porch, as he sleeps a wispy line representing the dreams of the young scholar swirls above his head, flowing and spreading into the other side of the bottle showing him in a passionate embrace with his forbidden love, Cui Yingying, all on a variety of diaper grounds.Provenance: Galerie Max in Brussels, Belgium, 19 February 1966 (according to an ancient family ledger inspected by Cabinet Portier, Paris, France, during their appraisal of the complete de Strycker estate; this ledger remains in the possession of the de Strycker family and may not be copied). Diameter neck 1.9 cm and mouth 0.5 cm This is a classic imperial lacquer snuff bottle on bronze. The group of bottles represents masterly carving in lacquer that is splendidly sculptural and covers a range of delightful subject matter, usually drawn from popular dramas, operas or novels, or myths and legends. We can be sure that the group as a whole was imperial, even if we cannot be sure that every last example was made for the court. If they were for example made in Suzhou, the same workshops might have made a few pieces for private sale as well. The snuff bottle depicts a famous scene from the Romance of the Western Chamber, written by Wang Shifu (1250-1300), a story immensely popular with all levels of society. Woodblock illustrations in the many editions helped conventionalize images that were instantly recognizable to the public, thus creating a corpus of motifs that was widely used by jade carvers, painters, silk embroiderers, lacquer workers, and other craftsmen.Professor Herbert Giles, whose History of Chinese Literature was published in 1924, refers to The Xixiang Ji as the play “which will best repay reading". It is the typical story where a handsome student and a beautiful girl attempt to cross the social divide, aided and incited by the girl's maid. The dialogue is punctuated with images of wind, snow, moonlight, and flowers, emphasizing both the passion and the romance felt by the struggling couple.Literature comparison:Four cinnabar lacquer bottles from this group carved with figural scenes are in the Qing Court Collection in the Palace Museum, Beijing, and are illustrated in Masterpieces of Snuff Bottles in the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1995, pp. 187-90, nos. 192-95. Another is illustrated in Moss, Graham, Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol. 7, Part 1, Hong Kong, 2009, pp. 175-82, no. 1538.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams New York, 20 March 2012, lot 66Price: USD 25,000 or approx. Lot 93

Registration - K232 FYKChassis No - TBCM.O.T. - 09/2024Odometer - 84,000The vendor has apparently owned this cheeky 1993 Sprite for eight years. It was his first car, and we understand it to have been used regularly and well maintained but dry stored through the winter months. In recent times it has benefited from new front wings, rear valance, sills and wheels, and been resprayed in its original livery of Diamond White. The original interior has also received attention, with the centre console and facia having been renewed. The vendor admits the Mini has seen little use since the lockdown, but confirms that it’s a ‘reliable little car that does what it should’. He currently grades the engine, manual transmission, bodywork and upholstery as ‘excellent’, and the electrics and paintwork and tyres as ‘good’. It now seeks a new owner and is being offered complete with Sony radio/CD unit coupled to a separate amp and pair of parcel shelf-mounted speakers, its original handbook, pair of keys and a collection of old MOT certificates, plus a fresh one with 12 months to run. It is doubtful if any other model of car can match the classic Mini for the number of special editions it inspired. The Sprite was created in the autumn of 1983 in anticipation of the model’s upcoming 25th anniversary. It revived a name last used for the baby Austin-Healey back in 1971, and offered an intermediate level of trim between that of the Mini City on which it was based and the plusher Mini Mayfair. It was powered by the well-proven 998cc version of the A Series engine and initially offered in either Cinnabar Red or Primula Yellow matched to grey herringbone upholstery; though a number of other colours were later used. The Sprite rode on 5x10 inch Exacton alloy wheels and featured Mini Special wheel arch extensions, twin door mirrors, and 1275 GT instrumentation. The production run was 2,500 units. In summary:A tidy, well cared for specimen currently displaying 84,873 milesThe subject of a degree of recent bodywork restorationDeclared a Category D insurance write-off in August 2017
