A Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer 'bats and peaches' box and cover Qing dynasty, Qianlong period Shaped and carved as a pair of ripe fruits, flanked with a flying bat and leafy tendrils. 12cm wide. 清乾隆 剔彩‘福壽’圖紋蓋盒 The combination of peaches and bats is one that started appearing more often in porcelain designs and other decorative arts from the reigns of Yongzheng and Qianlong onwards. As the fruit taking three thousand years to grow and as much to ripen in the garden of the Queen Mother of the West, the peach is a symbol of longevity. It is also the fruit associated with the God of Long Life Shoulao, who is often depicted holding a ripe fruit. According to legend, whoever eats one of the peaches from the garden of the Queen Mother of the West will acquire immortality. The Chinese word for bats, fu, is homophonous for the word ‘wealth’ or ‘happiness’, also fu, therefore bats act as a visual pun for this word. Together, peaches and bats represent a desire and a wish for a long and happy life. Condition Report: Scattered surface chips and small losses to the edges of the carved design and a few fine rim hairlines - please refer to additional images.

Provenance: Acquired in Hong Kong circa 1950s by the Great Aunt of the present owner. 清乾隆 剔紅佛手柑紋圓形蓋盒 來源:由現藏家姨母約於1950年代購於香港。 The finger citron is an unusually shaped citron variety whose fruit is segmented into finger-like sections. In Chinese, it is called ‘Buddha’s hand’, 佛手, which is at once a Buddhist emblem, and a homophone and visual pun to the phrase, good fortune/wealth and longevity, fu shou 福壽, thus becoming a symbol of happiness, longevity and good fortune, often gifted to family and friends for Lunar New Year.  In a Buddhist context, it is often given as an offering to Buddhist temples. According to tradition, Buddha prefers the fruit to resemble a closed rather than open hand, as in this fashion it is more reminiscent of the hands of the Buddha when in prayer. Condition Report: Approx. 3cm long loss to edge of rim of cover, and approx. 6mm loss to edge of box. Approx. 8mm chip to edge of design to box. A few nibbles to the internal rim of the box and to the edges of design to both.

A VERY RARE CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER '108 SHOU CHARACTERS' BRUSHPOT, BITONGQianlong The cylindrical vessel crisply carved through layers of cinnabar lacquer around the exterior with continous rows of 108 shou characters in various styles of zhuanshu calligraphy, all on a diaper-pattern ground, the mouth rim with a key-fret border. 9.8cm (3 7/8in) high.Footnotes:清乾隆 剔紅「壽」字紋筆筒Provenance: Priestley & Ferraro Chinese Art Ltd., London, 1 February 2013來源:倫敦古董商Priestley & Ferraro Chinese Art Ltd.,2013年2月1日The present brushpot with continuous rows of 108 Shou ('longevity') characters in different forms of seal script, was probably made as a birthday gift. The number of characters is highly significant as it tallies with the number of beads in a Buddhist rosary. The present lot is thus laden with auspicious and religious meaning. A Buddhist rosary has 108 beads because there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines or chakras converging to the heart. One of them, sushumna, leads to the crown chakra, and is believed to lead to the path of self-realisation. The number 108 is also significant for other reasons. The Temple of Heaven in Beijing has 108 pillars in the base, and the first King of the Zhou dynasty called on 108 Gods to help his troops in his attack on the Shang dynasty. The various styles of zhuanshu or seal script calligraphy is also entirely keeping with scholarly and artistic trends of the time. The Qing emperors endorsed Han learning and scholarship, encouraging scholars to study ancient texts carefully and meticulously. This movement, known as the 'searching for evidence' movement (kaozheng 考證), reached its height in the Qianlong era. Numerous dictionaries were published and the new philology sparked a fascination for artistic archaism, with the ancient seal script calligraphy becoming in vogue. The present stem cup is inspired by Tibetan butter lamps or chang ming deng. The Qing emperors publicly supported Tibetan Buddhism which brought both political and (to varying extents) personal benefits, by ensuring solidarity with Mongolian and Tibetan allies and providing personal spiritual guidance. The Qianlong Emperor was particularly dedicated to the practice of Tibetan Buddhism and this is reflected in the many decorative arts produced for the Court and as Imperial gifts during his reign. Compare with a similar carved cinnabar lacquer stem cup, Qianlong seal mark and of the period, in the Linden Museum, Stuttgart, illustrated in Im Zeichen Des Drachen von der Schönheit Chinesischer Lacke, Munich, 2006, pl.86. A Chinese cinnabar lacquer bowl and cover, late Qing dynasty. The cover carved with dragons chasing the flaming pearl, above floral decoration, the lower part with a painted metal rim, height 13cm, diameter 25.5cm. West Cornwall private seller, by family descent. The vendor inherited items from her great grandfather Captain John Dewar (ship master). He was born in Shanghai in 1866 and died in 1950. His wife Susan Smith Oudney (1875-1967) whose father was William Oudney a master mariner owned two clipper ships including 'The Coach Inn'. John and Susan married in Shanghai in 1896. A crack on the centre of the lid. some losses to the lacquer (see images)  The inside of the box base looks to have painted repairs, and the metal rim is misshapen with chipped paint.

Not many pieces of carved cinnabar lacquer made in the Qianlong period match the exquisite quality of this cover. In fact, the pair to this cover, complete with its box and contents, is in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Lin Qi,'Qianlong shiqi gongting yu mo baozhuang chutan', in Gugong bowuyuan yuankan, 2014.3 (173), pp.113-121, fig.6 (Fig.1). The identical large box contains sets of imperial ink sticks neatly arranged in cases imitating books and titled long xiang. The identical inscription on the carved cinnabar lacquer box also mentions that the ink sticks were arranged in this box in 1775, the same year mentioned on the present lot. A CLOISONNE ENAMEL 'DA JI' WALL VASE, CHINA, 18th CENTURYOf double gourd shape, the upper and lower bulbs centered by characters reading 'da' and 'ji' ('great fortune') respectively. Tied at the waist with a gilt-bronze flowing ribbon issuing loops and rolling ends along the sides. Finely decorated in bright enamels against a turquoise ground with colorful double-gourds borne on scrolling leafy vines, a bat diligently overlooking with its wings wrapped around the rim. The gilt-bronze back finely chased and incised with intertwining lotus scroll against a ring-punched ground with an aperture for mounting.Provenance: From the private collection of Sara Fredericks, probably acquired in New York during the 1960s, and thence by descent. The back with an old label, '40', and inscribed with a collector's number, '40'. Sara Fredericks (1903-1986) was a designer and retailer who specialized in women's luxury fashion for more than 50 years. After her marriage to Frederick Cohen, who was in the shoe business, she began selling dresses out of her home to women who admired her clothes. ''She lived the life her customers lived,'' said Pauline Trigere, who was among the designers who considered Miss Fredericks a friend as well as a client. Others in that category were Geoffrey Beene, James Galanos, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Bob Mackie, and Hubert de Givenchy. ''She had impeccable taste,'' Miss Trigere said, “her customers trusted her."Condition: Good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, including expected pitting. AN EXCEPTIONAL YELLOW JADE FIGURE OF A BEAR, HUANGXIONG, HAN DYNASTY, CHINA, 202 BC - 220 ADExpert's note: At peace with itself and the world, the bear appears to be enjoying the moment and is wholly lacking the ferocity that typifies most Han-dynasty representations of bears, tigers, and other wild beasts, marking this as an astonishingly rare and naturalistic sculpture. The stone is calcified throughout, but a single patch of the original jade fades from a fine yellow tone through a deep orange into a remarkable cinnabar red, exemplifying the fact that jade can have almost any color.Special care seems to have been given to this jade bear after its rediscovery. Not only has the stone been finely polished by a dedicated craftsman after it's retrieval from the earth - extensive soil encrustations remain visible all over the exterior - but it was also repaired with a neatly lacquered replacement piece meticulously inserted to the lower jaw. This lacquer repair, likely Japanese in origin, interplays nicely with the red shades on the left hind leg of the bear. The conclusion of this author is that the present lot was probably found at some point around the 18th century, where it was treated as described above, and eventually brought to Japan, where the red lacquer repair has been carried out. From there it made its way to Europe, probably at some point in the earlier part of the 20th century. Also note that until 1945, the German Reich and the Japanese Empire were close allies, exchanging on many different levels of culture.The small yet compelling sculpture represents a plump bear seated on its haunches in a moment of repose. The round eyes gazing forward and flanking the nose, the forehead with a central line below the attentively raised ears, the spine extending to the short, peach-form tail with very fine incised lines on either side, the haunches well rounded and extending to the muscular legs and clawed paws, with one tucked underneath. The opaque jade is of a deep yellow hue with orange, red and russet shades, covered almost entirely in ancient calcification.Provenance: From a German private estate, by repute acquired by an unknown ancestor long time ago and in the family ever since. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, displaying exceptionally well. Signs of wear and weathering, losses, nicks, calcification and encrustation as a result of an extended period of burial. An ancient red lacquer 'Kintsugi' style repair to the lower jaw, most likely applied in Japan a long time ago. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks over time. Deeply carved through several layers of cinnabar, orange, and black lacquer, the top of the cover with a shaped panel enclosing a bowl of precious objects radiating rays illuminating the large character Chun ('spring') centered by a roundel enclosing Shoulao flanked by two cranes standing before a pine tree and rockwork. The straight sides of the box and the cover are carved with angular scroll designs reserved against lozenge diaper. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Universite Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France's post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976). In 1964, the couple lent 174 objects from their collection to the Belgian city of Leuven's museum for an exhibition titled Oude kunst in Leuvens Privebezit ('Old Art in Private Collections in Leuven'), and in 1967 they lent around thirty Japanese objects to the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels for their exhibition Kunst van Japan im belgischen Privatverzameingen ('Japanese Art in Belgian Private Collections').Condition: Good condition with old wear and expected manufacturing irregularities.
