The figures are presented in various levels of relief, revealing the intricacies of the three layers of lacquer. A TIANQI AND QIANGJIN LACQUER CABINET, QIANLONG TO JIAQING PERIOD 乾隆至嘉慶時期戧金填漆開光櫃China, 1736-1821. The rectangular cabinet supported on a waisted foot raised and rectangular stand with two scroll-form feet, with two doors opening to reveal two shelves, below canted shoulders containing two drawers, all surmounted by a smaller two-door rectangular cabinet.The front is finely lacquered in red, brown, green, and black with a hilly river landscape lined with trees including pine and willow, houses, and bridges, the sides similarly decorated with foliate and angular scroll enclosing flower baskets, bats, and lotus, all framed by key-fret borders.Provenance: From a London dealer-collector, acquired from a car boot sale in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, showing expected old wear, small losses, minor old repairs, light scratches, nicks and chips. Overall with a naturally grown patina and displaying remarkably well.Weight: 3,660 g Dimensions: Height 51.5 cm, Width 46.6 cm, Depth 12.9 cm The metal hinges and fittings are finely chased with leafy vines against a ring-punched ground and the pulls are shaped like pomegranates.Expert's note: The present lot is remarkable not only for its unusual shape, but also for the quality of carving, rendering a complex design of various motifs with meticulous attention to detail. A rare carved cinnabar lacquer 'Nine Dragons' box and coverQianlong (1736-1795)The domed cover finely carved with a five-clawed dragon moving around a 'flaming pearl', on a dense ground of tumultuous waves and flames, encircled around the sides by four dragons in profile pursuing other flaming pearls against a continuous wave ground, the base similarly decorated with four further dragons and pearls, all supported on a key-fret foot, the interior and base lacquered black, 28cm (11in) diam.Footnotes:清乾隆 剔紅九龍紋蓋盒Intricately carved with a complex design of nine dynamic dragons striding in pursuit of flaming pearls, the present piece reveals the opulent taste of the Qianlong emperor and the zenith of lacquer carving achieved during his reign. Rendered with ferocious expressions, gaping jaws that reveal sharp fangs, bulbous eyes and flaring nostrils, the muscular dragons thrash through the clouds to create a brilliant scene of intense strength and energy. Boxes of this quality and carved with this motif were produced at the Lacquer Workshops of the 'Zaobanchu' (Imperial Palace Workshop), located in the Forbidden City.The nine-dragon motif refers to the nine sons of the dragon, longsheng jiuzi 龍生九子, who are the mythological sons of the Dragon King. This subject matter can be seen as early as the Song dynasty, as painted on the famous ink and colour handscroll titled 'Nine Dragons' attributed to the Southern Song dynasty court painter Chen Rong (1200-1266) in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (accession no.17.1697).
