A Chinese red cinnabar lacquer dish decorated and carved with various Buddhistic style auspicious objects to the border around a central key fret-style design, ebonised underside footrim with six character mark, (20th century) (29cm diameter)Condition looks quite good with no major problems noted.  There is some light scratching to the underside but nothing to be concerned about.  In our opinion we think this was possibly produced sometime in the 20th Century and the quality of the “carving” appears very good.  There is also a six character mark to the underside of the black foot.

Lot 100

Pre-Columbian, Honduras, Ulua Valley, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 850 CE. A wonderful hand-built blackware pottery vessel with a cylindrical body, a thick rim with a slight lip, and a deep interior cavity, all atop a trio of hollow spherical rattle feet. The upper body is ringed with a register of incised abstract pseudo-glyphs with linear and circular motifs. The lower body is adorned with two enormous panels featuring an elaborately-carved abstract depiction of the bird-demon Vucub Caquix (literally "Seven Macaw") after being defeated by the hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. The bird features an open mouth with spiraling teeth, spiraling eyes, and an intricate animal-headed headdress with further linear panels decorated with stippling. The spirals on the eyes and mouth represent the corn kernels used by healers employed by the hero twins when "helping" Vucub Caquix after his defeat. Thick traces of red cinnabar accentuate all incised areas. Size: 4.75" W x 6.625" H (12.1 cm x 16.8 cm). Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, early Post-Classic, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. An incredible disc-shaped limestone ball court marker, its upper face decorated with a dramatic motif. Carved in relief, it features a large skull with an open mouth. Its protruding tongue, composed of elaborate geometric elements, forms an outer border around the skull. Dark red pigment is still visible in the lower profile areas of the marker; when first made, it would have been painted bright colors. Size: 11.75" W (29.8 cm); 14.25" H (36.2 cm) on included custom stand.Maya ballcourt markers reinforced important mythological and symbolic concepts, with markers found at sites like Copan and La Esperanza (Chinkultic) depicting important stories that explained the purpose of the ball game - at least as far as archaeologists are able to interpret, with some mysteries still remaining. The skull form here may reference the taking of trophy heads as part of the ritual of human sacrifice. Indeed, trophy heads were a near-universal constant in Mesoamerican imagery for millennia, although by the Classic Maya period it seems more likely that the taking of actual trophy heads had (mostly) been replaced by the ball from the ballgame (as in the Popol Vuh, where a decapitated head is used instead of a rubber ball). Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Lemon Carro, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. Wow! An absolutely stunning pale red stone cup, cylindrical in form, with its entire exterior - the sides and bottom of the vessel - carved with a multitude of relief figures representing gods and important religious contexts. Multiple serpents, jaguars, birds, and a central figure that appears to combine human and avian features encircle the body. The lower profile areas are colored bright red with a rich layer of cinnabar pigment. The detail and preservation is truly incredible! Comes in custom display case with mirror on base so you can see the underside! Size of cup: 2.4" W x 3.75" H (6.1 cm x 9.5 cm); size of case: Size: 6" L x 6" W x 11.15" H (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm x 28.3 cm)The Chavin people lived in the northern Highland Andes, and their capital, Chavin de Huantar, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artwork of Chavin represents the first widespread style in the Andes. The center of Chavin de Huantar is a massive, flat-topped pyramid, surrounded by lower platforms. Between 1200 and 500 BCE the pyramid space was used for religious ceremonies. The Old Temple, constructed very early in the history of the site, consists of a series of passageways built around a circular courtyard; within were carved stone monuments showing jaguars, serpents, and other figures with transformative and/or anthropomorphic features. At the very center is a towering stone stela depicting an anthropomorphic figure with a jaguar head and a human body, believed to be Lanzon, the chief deity of Chavin. Researchers believe that worshippers ingested hallucinogenic drugs, in part using vessels like this one, and then were led in the dark through the labyrinthine passageways before entering the central courtyard and coming abruptly face-to-face with the snarling features of the god.For comparison, see Christie's Sale #1775, lot 71, November 21, 2006, which sold for $192,000. Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A stunning bowl of a shallow form, hand-carved from dense stone of a dark-brown hue. The vessel is defined by a round but stable base, a thick rim, and a wide basin with a smooth, incredibly smooth surface. The base of the bowl displays meticulously-carved linear, curvilinear, and spiraled bands with a straight line down the middle, a curved line with spiraling terminals to either side, and a pair of lemniscate (infinity symbol) forms on either side which form the rough shape of a heart. Traces of decorative red cinnabar are visible across most of the incised decorations on the bottom. Size: 12.125" W x 2.5" H (30.8 cm x 6.4 cm). Lot 118a

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Sican / Lambayeque, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A haunting gilded silver (87% pure) death mask with a broad face, black painted almond-shaped eyes, and a three-dimensional nose. The chin is sharply pointed and the face is constructed from two pieces of silver sheet that are held together with gilded silver "staples". Similarly, the ears and large round earrings are also held in place with "staples" - with many of the original staples remaining. Fascinatingly, two broad bands of cinnabar pigment decorate the face - one across the cheeks, just under the eyes, and the other vertical down from the nose to the tip of the chin, giving the face a colorful appearance. Size of mask: 11.5" W x 7.5" H (29.2 cm x 19 cm); size of frame: 20.25" W x 16.25" H (51.4 cm x 41.3 cm); silver is 87% pureThe mask was not intended to represent an individual, but rather a stylized deity, as all of the known masks from the region follow a very similar formula. In this way, the deceased could readily assume a godly identity. Sican elites were patrons of workshops that made fine metal objects like this, and they took their wealth with them when they passed away. Buried in mounds, these individuals would be entombed in high style. At the site of Batan Grande, for example, a single burial could include up to five masks - one on the head, and the others at the feet. Masks like the one featured here were placed in graves alongside headdresses, scepters, crowns, and ceremonial weapons. Near East/Holy Land, Palmyra, Roman period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A high relief funerary bust, hand-carved from limestone, depicting half of the body of a young man with an inscription. Executed in high relief, the youth is dressed in a himation, with the hands emerging out of the garment. As is typical of the Palmyrene style, the youth has an oval face with large eyes and a hairstyle composed of detailed, snail-like curls arranged in row that end above his protruding ears. The irises of his almond-shaped eyes are incised, and the pupils are drilled. In the background is a curtain held in place by circular knobs against a pair of palm fronds. The stela has a four-line Aramaic inscription to the right of the man's head that retains original red cinnabar pigment in its incised lines. Size: 16" W x 22.5" H (40.6 cm x 57.2 cm)Palmyra was a wealthy city that linked the caravan routes from the Parthian Near East with the Roman mediterranean; the people who lived there during this period largely enjoyed prosperity and were able to adopt eastern and western customs, clothing, and artistic styles, creating a distinctive visual culture unique to the city. We know of this culture today from the large funerary monuments that the Palmyrans built - tower-shaped vaults whose interiors were lined with sculpted limestone reliefs depicting the deceased.
