Jahrhundert Öl auf Leinwand, dubliert91 x 105 cm, mit Rahmen 109 x 122 cmDie hier dargestellte Szene zeigt eine Dreiergruppe von einer Frau und zwei Männern, die ein sehr altes Brettspiel spielen, das zahlreiche Namen hat: Entstanden ist es vermutlich im Persien des 2. Jahrtausends v. Chr. Und es war auch bei den Griechen und Römern bekannt. Es wird heute im europäischen Raum unter anderem als Backgammon (aus dem englischen Sprachraum) oder Trictrac (Frankreich) bezeichnet. Erstmals tauchte es um 1500 in Italien auf; im 18. Jahrhundert war es in aristokratischen Kreisen äußerst beliebt. Das Spiel verbindet Zufall mit Strategie: Man folgt den Augenzahlen von zwei Würfeln, um die Spielsteine ins Ziel zu bringen, möchte aber gleichzeitig den Gegner daran hindern, dasselbe zu tun. Die zwei sitzenden Figuren blicken zum stehenden Mann auf, der eine Kappe hinter seinem Rücken und ein Stab in der Hand hält. Außerdem trägt er eine kunstvoll verzierte, um die Schultern geschlungenen Tasche. Die mittig positionierte Frau hält einen Würfelbecher, wobei dies darauf hindeuten könnte, dass Sie gerade am Zug ist. Sie wendet sich allerdings vom Spielbrett und ihrem Gegenüber ab und blickt über die Schulter zurück zu dem stehenden Mann. Möglicherweise gibt er ihr gerade einen Tipp, welche Spielsteine sie bewegen sollte? Der Mann auf der rechten Bildhälfte hält bereits einen überdimensioniert dargestellten Spielstein in der Hand und blickt den zweiten Mann erwartungsvoll an. Interessanterweise sind sonst keine Spielsteine zu sehen, wobei dies darauf hindeutet, dass sich das Spiel dem Ende nähert. Diese Darstellung leitet sich von Spielszenen auf Stichen oder Gemälden ab; ein mögliches Vorbild wäre Jan van Bijlerts (1597/8-1671) „Joueurs de trictrac“ (Musée de la loterie, Brüssel). Jedoch ist das hier vorgestellte Gemälde von weicherer Modellierung und feinerer Ausführung, besonders in den textilen Details. Insgesamt zeigt das Gemälde französische Inspirationen, wurde aber wohl im deutschen Raum gemalt. Möglicherweise war es Johann Heinrich Tischbein der Ältere, einer der bedeutendsten Maler des 18. Jahrhunderts, der dieses Werk schuf. Er studierte in Paris und bereiste auch Italien. Später fungierte er als Hofmaler für zwei Landgrafen und begründete die Kasseler Kunstakademie. Tischbein malte häufig höfisch-elegante Portraits, wobei auch dieses in jene Gattung fallen könnte. Der Maler bediente sich hier außerdem der Chiaroscuro Technik von Caravaggio, die besonders in Italien aber auch in Frankreich beliebt war. Jedoch gibt es keine exakte dramatische Lichtquelle; die drei Personen heben sich deutlich vor dem dunklen Interieur ab, wobei die farbigen Gewänder dadurch zum Leuchten gebrachten werden. Jedoch ist das Inkarnat der Dame wesentlich heller gehalten als jene der Männerfiguren und deutet möglicherweise auf eine erotische Komponente hin. Könnte es sich bei einem der Männer um den Auftraggeber handeln, der sich mit seiner Angebeteten und einem Nebenbuhler darstellen lässt, um die Geliebte zu beeindrucken und für sich zu gewinnen? Oder könnte die Dame das Gemälde in Auftrag gegeben haben, um ihre beiden Verehrer stolz zu präsentieren und gegenüberzustellen?Literatur:Tristan Donovan, It's all a game.
