Hammett's novels had a large influence on films, particularly in the genres of detective fiction, mystery thrillers and film noir. Book signed and inscribed, being a hardback edition of The Thin Man, published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York, Seventh Printing, July 1934. Signed by Hammett in dark fountain pen ink to the front free endpaper, 'For Sarah E. Gibbs, with all good wishes, Dashiell Hammett'. Unusual 19th Century Chinese export black lacquer quadruple-top games table, of serpentine outline, the uppermost hinged top decorated in gilt with insects and blossoming boughs, enclosing a plain 'tea table' top, a chess board top within profuse foliate scrollwork, and a third top with coastal scene, over two short drawers (one enclosing Backgammon board), raised on tapering square section supports with spade feet terminating in square brass caps and castors, 90cm x 46cm x 83cm highCondition report: Uppermost top is somewhat faded. All tops are flaked and worn to corners. Mechaism is very fragile - one back leg loose due to sheer weight of tops, gateleg mechanism secured shut. Has been stored for approximately 20 years so would benefit from a full restoration.

A CONTINENTAL ROSEWOOD, FRUITWOOD AND IVORY INLAID FOLDING GAMES BOARDLate 18th / Early 19th CenturyThe exterior inlaid with chessboard squares, the interior for backgammon with central inlaid micro-mosaic panels and corners, 63cm x 53cm open;  31.5cm x 53cm closedThe geometric decorative inlay to this board has its precedent in earlier, elaborate gaming boards originating from the Islamic period of the Moors ruling the Iberian Peninsular. Numerous recorded boards from the 14th Century onwards combine a use of materials and geometric motifs, inherited from the Umayyads and used throughout Spain and North Africa. The technique survived the Reconquista and was an influential decorative element in Renaissance furniture of Spain and Italy. For an example of a gaming board of a similar style, circa 1500, made in Italy see Hollander 2005, p.89, no.58.   Condition report: Numerous losses, shrinkage cracks and related chips. Loss significantly along the hinged side, corners and front edges. Some old patch repairs in areas. The lozenge shaped patches lacking three with one remaining, possibly bone. Some old worm evident to the carcass timber. Some warping in areas. Marks, some fading and general wear commensurate with use and age.

The top is also scratched. There is a small patch repair of timber to the front-left hand corner. Some glue marks/repairs around the legs. The hinged compartments - the one with the divided interior has various glue marks. With key and working lock.

dating: about 1885 provenance: China, Folding chessboard with two metallic hinges, lacquered, black and gold board, the border and the external sides finely painted in gold, silver and red with figures, parts of buildings, dragons, butterflies and floral motifs on a black background. The inner part with a Backgammon drawings. Small damages and missing parts at the lacquer. Sculpted, natural ivory pawns for a player and red-painted ivory pawns for the other player. Small missing parts and defects, some of them are available and easy to glue. Provenance: Frigate Commander Federico Cravosio, the captain of the military Vessel Rapido on which he sailed from 1886 to 1888 in different Asian Countries with the Minister De Luca, who signed several treaties with different countries: in particular, he signed a treaty of friendship and trade with the Reign of Korea, in which also Cravosio had an important role. The chessboard was a souvenir of the captain from his journey in Italy. dimensions 49.5 x 49.5 x 4.5 cm.
