The Countess, who died in 2001, was the kind of woman for whom words 'pluck' and 'spirit' might have been invented. Her husband, 6th Earl of Ranfurly, was Governor General of the Bahamas, between 1953 and 1956.Literature: Susan E Stewart, 'Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840', p.265, pl.270 and p.267, pl.272, for similar examples.
A French empire mahogany 'Tric Trac' table, with a removable leather lined top to reveal a fitted interior as a gaming table, with end drawers and on square tapering legs and gilt brass collared feet 73 x 115 x 57cm (28 x 45 x 22in) Other Notes: Trictrac is often referred to as the French name for backgammon, however real Trictrac is quite a different game. It was invented in France around 1500. The equipment is much the same as in backgammon. Players have fifteen checkers each which they move around the board according to rolls of the dice. However, unlike backgammon, racing plays only a small role in Trictrac. By the reign of Louis XIV, the game had evolved into two separate games, le Petit Trictrac and le Grand Trictrac. It remained popular in France until the middle of the nineteenth century. A small mark to the leather top, otherwise the condition is considered to be good. There are no counters.

Power" Guide (Est. plus 21% premium inc. VAT)
A Victorian rosewood veneered games table, backgammon, chess and cribbage, with turned column and four downswept legs terminating in brass capped castors. Width 91.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The sliding top is flat and not warped but it does have polish damage to the centre caused by water. One corner of the top has stress fractures to the veneers but no losses. The games surface underneath is in generally good order. There is a trace of an old ring mark to the centre and three slightly lifting parquetry squares. The backgammon board is in good order although a little dirty and with three old watermarks. The hinged compartments to left and right both have very minor warps which in our opinion are not problematic. There is a small piece of moulding missing from the extreme right of the front of the frieze and another small section of veneer is missing to the left. Exactly the same comments apply to the opposite side. The centre column is in good order as are the legs which are structurally sound. The castors are original and sound and secure. There are two old stress fractures to one leg but no open gap. There is a metal bracing hoop underneath all legs. The piece is structurally sound with no loose joints.
