A 19th century Calvert style ivory chess set, red stained and natural, well turned, the king 10.3cm. high, the pawns 4.3cm. high. (complete); together with a 19th century mahogany cased travelling chess set with red stained and natural ivory pieces, the board 9¼in. (23.5cm.) square; and a 19th century Chinese export chinoiserie lacquered folding chess / backgammon board. (3), *Condition:- Chess set: One white bishop with small chip to mitre. Old glue to threaded joint below one white knight's head. Red queen - worn patch to red stain to ball to top. Two chips to turning on red king. A few tiny frits to collars on pawns. Red pieces have a few rubs and tiny scratches to stained colour. One red knight has heavier wear to detail on head., - Travelling chess set: Very good. Complete. Some rubbing to polish around holes on board squares from placing of pieces during play. Dark spirit stain to wood to border of board in one corner. Exterior has some light scratches and scuffs to surface., - Chinese board: Fair condition - heavy wear to lacquer to exterior and chips/flakes to edges. Interior has some gilt wear and large crack across lacquer to one side. Lacks catch to keep closed.

'The Building News' commented in the November 24th edition that 'our double-page illustration this week gives some detailed drawings of the four figure subjects of the series of eight from the painted windows of a new billiard-room lately built at Court-green, Leighton-court-road, Streatham for Mr J. Chapple Esq.' and later in the December 1st edition that 'The work was executed by Messrs Saunders & Co of Endell-street, from cartoons by Mr F. Smith'.The painted glass panels, of which the current lot was one of eight, occupied the upper portion of a bay window and a further window in the room. The rest of the room was decorated in the 'Pompeian style' with walls painted with panels 'illustrative of Greek mythology' and 'specially designed' furniture. The illustrations show the designs for the current painted glass panel and the seven others entitled 'Dice'; 'Billiards'; 'Draughts'; 'Chess'; 'Cards'; 'Dominoes'; and 'Tossing'. The illustrations are inscribed PAINTED GLASS DECORATIONS/ THE BILLIARD ROOM/ STREATHAM HILL/ THOMAS HARRIS ARCHITECT. The house at Court Green, Streatham, was designed by Thomas Harris, who was also the architect of Milner Field, Yorkshire, which he built for Titus Salt in 1874.Saunders & Co. was established by W. Gualbert Saunders in 1859 and Saunders established a long partnership with the architect William Burges, working with him on many of his major commissions. Frederick Smith left Saunders & Co. in 1877 to form the partnership Campbell, Smith & Co, a firm of church decorators founded by Charles Campbell in 1873.
