Arsenal in China in 1995: two of the rarest post-war Arsenal programmes for the matches v Beijing Guoan 17th May and Tianjin 18th May, In 1995 Arsenal toured the Far-East and played three matches in total during May 1995. On 17th May Arsenal played Beijing Guoan in the National Workers` Stadium and on 18th May Arsenal played Tianjin in the Tianjin Mingyuan Stadium before moving to Hong Kong, at the time under British rule, for the third and last match of the tour. The major sponsor of the 3 match tour was Rothmans Tobacco using the Craven A name. For the final match in Hong Kong a full official programme was issued and readily available which included cigarette advertising. However, shortly before the 2 matches took place in China the Government of that country decided to change the laws on cigarette advertising to become more restrictive. As the whole of the back page of the programme for Tianjin (the smaller of the 2 Chinese teams) advertised Craven Cigarettes, the sponsor thought it prudent that the programme was not issued. For the larger of the 2 teams, Beijing Guoan, a new back page sponsor was found at short notice, but unfortunately due to last minute technical problems, given late change of sponsor, it was impossible to print enough programmes to cover demand. Therefore the organiser decided not to commence a full print run. These two full programmes were printed in very small numbers as proof copies but were never issued. In addition they were destroyed without being released, so that these two have survived and no further copies will be available

In the first programme in the volume, being the opening game of the season v New Brompton on 3rd September 1910, the editor`s notes includes an apology to supporters for the fact that the club`s new ground of The Den was not quite ready for the opening match as planned and confirming that the game was to be played at "the old enclosure." Then follows an assurance to supporters that all would be ready at New Cross for the second home fixture against West Ham United on 24th September. The West Ham programme then offers a further apology with the club Directors at pains to point out that they are "in no way responsible for the delay" and that their contractors had been unable to obtain necessary ironwork. The Den finally opened its doors to the public on 22nd October for the Southern League fixture v Brighton. The first programme also introduces itself under the heading "The New Programme", the notes reading "We believe the rank and file of our supporters will appreciate the effort which is being made to publish an attractive Official Programme, a feature carried out by almost every club throughout the Leagues. It is the intention of the Directors to intimate to their supporters through the medium of this publication the whole of the business that is available for publicity. This, the first issue, speaks for itself and generally indicates the contents from week to week. By co-operation with the publishers of other League Club Programmes we hope at different times to present some interesting articles on players past and present, as well as striking portraits of visiting players and officials."

SIR JOHN ISAAC THORNEYCROFT`S LETTERS PATENT: "IMPROVEMENTS IN TORPEDO APPARATUS FOR VESSELS", 30TH AUGUST, 1877 printed and annotated on vellum and mounted with two technical drawings for his side-launch davit system either side of the wax seal of state - 34 1/2 x 39Iin. (87.5 x 100.5cm.) overall. Having noted the success, in principal at least, of the torpedo in the American Civil War, the Admiralty began their own developments in their design and delivery. The main limitation of the spar torpedoes used in the American conflict had been the necessity for a vessel to get close enough to engage. In March 1877, Thorneycroft demonstrated a spar attack on a hulk with The Times noting that after the explosion the little craftÉ went round and round for a few moments and quietly resumed the direction of the squadron. Clearly a "fish" torpedo would be needed and, having acquired the patents from Whitehead in 1871, the Arsenal at Woolwich made several improvements. Thorneycroft built the Navy`s first torpedo boat Lightning (later named TB.1) in 1877 which carried a forward facing tube. The later versions carried twin torpedoes, mounted in the system patented in this lot by Sir John I. Thorneycroft.

The cartoon, entitled The Best Ever-or the Sultan of Snooker and the Footballer that fooled `em, depicts Davis, dressed as a Sultan, magically potting various balls with James, in his Arsenal kit, standing alongside. The footballer has a speech bubble in which he states `You may put more in the net but I`ve got eleven men trying to stop me`. Signed by Webster at the base and dated 1944 in his hand, and further signed by both James and Davis in fountain pen ink to clear areas alongside their images. Davis has added an inscription to The Service Club and also added the date 1944. The signatures of James and Davis are very slightly faded, although completely legible.
