A pair of joined oak stools by Robert Thompson of Kilburn (Mouseman), each with dished plank seat on octagonal baluster corner supports united by plain side stretchers, 41 cm wide, 36 cm high (2) Note: Robert Thompson, born in 1876, dedicated his life to the craft of carving and joinery in English oak, and produced furniture based on the English styles of the 17th century. The carved mouse motif found on Thompson’s furniture was said to have been carved when one of Thompson’s craftsmen remarked that they were all as poor as church mice, whereupon Robert carved a mouse on the church screen he was working on. The mouse has continued as a trade mark for the factory ever since.
