First edition of one of the greatest scholarly achievements in literary history. "Dr Johnson performed with his dictionary the most amazing, enduring and endearing one-man feat in the field of lexicography... Johnson introduced into English lexicography principles which had alre4ady been accepted in Europe but were quite novel in mid-eighteenth-century England. He codified the spelling of English words; he gave full and lucid definitions of their meanings... and he adduced extensive and apt illustrations from a wide range of authoritative writers." (PMM). Johnson was commissioned to write the dictionary by a consortium of London booksellers in 1746 and paid 1500 guineas. It took him seven years and contains over 42,000 words illustrated with over 114,000 literary quotations from Shakespeare, Milton and Dryden among others.
