Frederick (Fred) William Mayor IS (1865-1916) “The Feather Hat”Signed verso, oil on canvas, 47cm by 34.5cmExhibited: T B and R Jordan "Third Harrogate Group Staithes Exhibition" no.83Provenance: The Walker Galleries, HarrogateWith certificate of authenticity affixed to the reverse by James Mayor, the artist's Grandson, 9.4.2003Original canvas. Evidence of some form of repair to reverse (see images) with some associated retouching to front of canvas. Cleaned and revarnished. The paint is thinner to the background mostly and the canvas is more apparent. This may be by execution as the work has a free and sketch-like quality to it. Canvas is slightly loose to centre. There is little further to easily discern under a UV light by way of later paint or restoration but does not exclude the possibility. Slght stretcher shadow. Otherwise in a stable state of preservation.
