A FINE CASED PAIR OF 40-BORE PERCUSSION DUELLING PISTOLS BY FORSYTH & CO., LONDON, serial nos. 4200/1, Circa 1838, 14 1/4in. overall, with browned twist swamped octagonal sighted barrels each signed 'FORSYTH & CO. PATENT. LONDON', case-hardened patent breeches each inlaid with two platinum lines and with pierced platinum plug engraved with a flower-head, case-hardened scroll engraved breech-faces, tangs and bolted back-action locks, the last each signed 'FORSYTH & CO. PATENT', figured walnut butts each with chequered grip, set triggers, silver escutcheons, silver pommels each engraved with a sunburst, blued scroll engraved trigger-guards, and much original finish throughout (browning and case-hardening faded, some slight discolouration), London proof marks, in original lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories including cylindrical Sykes Patent powder-flask, blued oil bottle, a small turned pot containing two spare breech screws, a turned percussion cap pot, a loading rod, a cleaning rod, a nipple wrench with pricker, iron pincer bullet mould, turnscrew and wad-cutter, the lid with trade label of circa 1830-1852, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle and circular brass escutcheon.
