A Chinese porcelain bottle vase, decorated in under glaze blue with figures in a garden setting, bearing two character mark to base, together with a Chinese baluster shaped porcelain vase decorated with prunus blossom and bearing four character mark to base, a blanc-de-chine figure with lotus flower, a porcelain jug in the Oriental taste, an Oriental style cylindrical vase, an Oriental plate decorated with a dragon and a Continental porcelain pot pourri decorated with hibiscus and raised on four lion's paw feet CONDITION REPORTS Bottle vase height approx 13cm, overall with some general wear and scuffs and a little rough around the top rim but overall appears sound. Prunus vase is very damaged around neck and rim and is glued and with chips and losses. The blanc de chine figure has some wear and small frits. Chinese style jug has a few chips. Continental pot and cover has large areas of damage and losses. Cylindrical vase has extensive repairs and overpainting. Plate has some scuffs and various chips and losses to the decoration.
Manuscript recipe book. An Old Receipt Book which was Mrs. Lansdown's, the wife of Coll. Lansdown of Woodborough, late 17th century to mid 18th century, approximately 80pp. (including a few blank leaves), written in ink on laid paper, mostly to one side of the leaf only, in more than one hand, filled with culinary recipes and a few medical/household receipts, with index at the front (early manuscript name of Anne Jones on reverse), fleur-de-lys watermark (late 17th century?), some staining, insect damage throughout, with some loss, original boards, heavily worn, with manuscript title on upper cover, 39 x 15.5cm (15.5 x 6ins) An early manuscript recipe book in an unusal format, containing such recipes as: 'To make Jelly of Pippins'; 'To Pickle Pidgeons'; 'To Pot Hare'; 'To make Ebolum'; 'To make Shipcoate Cheek'; 'To make Syrrup of Gillyflowers'; 'To make March paine'; 'To smooth Candy Oringes Lemmons, ellicumpane roots, or any other Suckets whatever'; 'To make Harts horn Jelly the Lady Mordants way'; 'To pickle Indian Cresse buds'; 'To take Gross'y Spots, pitch, Tarr, or paint out of silk, cloth, or stuff', and with such intriguing recipes as 'To make white Gambells': "Take a peny worth of Gum Dragon, and steep it in Orrange flower water, or rose water, as much as it will take to make it thick: an ounce of Almonds blanched as much Ambergreese or Musk as you please, and as much double refined sugar as will make it a Paste: Pound all this in a Mortar an hour, it is the pounding makes or spoyles them...". Hinge good. Marks good. No apparent repairs. Some polish residue and light handling wear. Excellent example.
