A 19th century gilded porcelain bough pot of Bombe shape and raised on four scrolling-style legs (19cm diameter)Condition report - there is quite a lot of gilt rubbing on the actual main surface of the piece. The glaze crazing is prevalent to complete insides and the underside etc. There seems to be a pink tinge to the glaze on the underside. There is gilt wear commensurate and prevalent with age to the top of the lip where the lid meets the lower piece, some gilt rubbing and scratches commensurate with age. There are no chips, cracks or restoration noted to the lower section. The lid itself is a similar story - gilt rubbing as expected around the edges and to some of the circular flower holes. Turning over the lid there is quite a prevalent mauve/purple colour to the glaze around the edges. No chips, cracks or restorations noted (please see several additional images).

A good slim oak side cabinet in 17th century style, the thumbnail-moulded top above four panelled doors decorated with Gothic tracery and the lower doors headed with flower heads, on pot board style stand with turned legs (63cm wide)The thumbnail-moulded top exhibits some water damage and would need repolishing to bring it back up to original condition. The piece is a very good 20th century reproduction and as such is still in very good condition overall; the sides look good with no problems or splitting; no restoration is noted; the interior of both cupboards, although dusty, is as it should be although on the top cupboard the right-hand door is opened and there is an approx. 1cm circular hole in one of the back board batons (possibly originally for an electrical wire?). Although the piece needs a polish, overall it is in very good original condition. The pod board style stretcher at the bottom has some minor scuffing and scratching to the front and appears to have split slightly at the back (please see images). In the Auctioneer's opinion this could be fairly easily remedied and polished out etc. There is no evidence of woodworm, the doors aren't warped. Height 147cm

At about the same time that this painting was made she wrote, 'I like promise of things to come. There always turns out such unexpected and exciting things in the colourlessness of the unknown future'. Candlemas is celebrated 2nd February and as the painting was almost certainly painted at Boothby, Cumberland, Winifred's father's house, and where she had been living since the beginning of the second world war, the hyacinth bulbs were most likely grown by Winifred herself. Another consistent theme in Winifred's painting is what she describes as 'the opposition of light and dark', here seen in the juxtaposition of the white flowers against the deep midnight blue of a frosty wintery night. In her article 'I Like To Have A Picture In My Room' Winifred wrote, 'Colour is one of the surest ways of expressing joy – the joy that resides in a happy home. If the colours be welded scientifically, they can glow – even make luminosity in the even light of an interior; and added to this light my picture must have recesses with itself, a flower bud or a distinct prospect, expressing the secret within all that is true'.Helen Beguin was a close friend of Winifred's. Originally secretary to Winifred's father, Charles Roberts, latterly she lived at the Chris House, Boothby, where she enjoyed her garden and made pots, many of which Winifred owned. See Helen's Bunch in Helen's Pot (1974) (Winifred Nicholson in Cumberland, Abbot Hall, 2016, p. 74).We are grateful to Jovan Nicholson for compiling this catalogue entry. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
